1. Save North Kelvin Meadow and Children's Wood

The North Kelvin Meadow and Children's Wood are a multi-use wild green space between Maryhill and North Kelvin in Glasgow.

It is bounded by Clouston, Sanda and Kelbourne Streets, and used to be football pitches and tennis courts. For 20 years, since the City Council abandoned the land, local residents have been looking after it.

Around 1000 people per month have been using the land at formal events over the last year, and many more use it informally for their children to play in, for dog-walking, and for environmental issues such as growing food and composting. A planning application has been submitted which will level all but a handful of the 480 trees on the site.

We are past the point at which we are allowed to make formal representation to the Planning Department. But we still need your support - this petition will be used in an appeal to the Scottish Government if the planning application is approved by the City Council.

Please follow the links for much more on this issue of the importance of wild green space that is so important to all of us.

2. Save the North Vancouver Delbrook Pottery Studio

Delbrook Pottery Studio has been operating in the North Shore for over 30years. Over this time it has provided the much needed space for North Vancouverites to create and express themselves using clay in a community focused and inexpensive way.

The studio offers drop-in and structured classes every day of the week, including studio memberships. Programs run for families, parent and child (3-5yrs), kids (6-12yrs), adults and seniors.

Within the next few years plans are underway to create a new Recreation Centre to consolidate William Griffin and Delbrook Rec Centers. At the moment there is great concern that the new building plans do not include space for a pottery studio.

When Delbrook Rec Centre is demolished, we will lose one of only two pottery studios run by the North Vancouver Rec Commission. Parkgate studio will be unable to accommodate the resulting volume and demand once this occurs.

At a time when the Government has recognized that Art is as important as fitness to the community by implementing a tax credit for children’s art programs, should we not in North Vancouver also recognize this, and preserve and expand already run clay programs for generations to come?

8. End the Separation of Illustrators from Crafters at Anime North!

This petition is to put an end to the separation of illustrators from crafters at Anime North (an Anime Convention located in Toronto, Ontario). We are asking the staff at Anime North to please bring back Artists Alley and put an end to the Comic Market & Crafters Corner.

Several amateur artists have been forced to abandon one of their passions and make unnecessary compromises due to the strict new rules Anime North Staff has enforced.

Comic Market:
“Absolutely no merchandise that is considered craft or non-paper media with the exception of laminated paper magnets and mylar/paper buttons are allowed to be sold in the Comic Market. Examples of prohibited items include totebags, pillows, t-shirts and other apparel, jewellery, plushies, etc. Please refer to the Crafter’s Corner for the sale of craft merchandise.”

Crafters Corner:
“Absolutely no merchandise that is considered to be illustrated paper media is allowed for sale in the Crafters Corner. Examples include but are not limited to prints, magnets, buttons, and doujinshi. Please contact the Crafters Corner coordinator if you have any
questions about prohibited merchandise.”

This rule is far too strict, leaving no breathing space for multitalented artists. Artists Alley has been around for years and it's always been successful! It makes the convention less diverse and the quality was obvious compared to former years. Illustrators and crafters have always been able to unite until last year (2008). Anime North is the only convention with this rule and it makes absolutely no sense. You pay for the table, you should be able to decide what you want to sell there.

Let the staff at Anime North know you are unhappy with this decision!

Help us bring back Artists Alley!

9. Support a real Solution for Greece Macedonia dispute re the name issue

Background of Greece-Macedonian dispute on the name issue

The Macedonia naming dispute refers to the disagreement over the use of the name Macedonia between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. Greece opposes on 1991's constitutional name, after Macedonia declare a full independence from SFRY, though the name Macedonia was in official use as a constitutional name of the state since 02 August 1944. (Source: Wikipedia free encyclopaedia)

Background of existence of Modern Macedonian state and the name

Macedonia was a single geographic entity until the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. As a result of the Treaty of Bucharest, Macedonia was partitioned among Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria. These regions are known as the Republic of Macedonia (organised state since 1944 and independent since 1991), Aegean Macedonia (occupied by Greece since 1913), Pirin of macedonia (occupied by Bulgaria since 1913). Declaration (Manifesto) of ASNOM - 02 August 1944

ASNOM became and remained the biggest event of Macedonian struggle for national freedom and sovereignty. The most important decision at the First Session of ASNOM was the decision to proclaim ASNOM the supreme legislative and executive body representing the Macedonian people, and the pinnacle of state authority in Macedonia. It incorporated initial guidelines on constituting the Macedonian state, creating the "constitutional, legal document, upon the basis of which the Macedonian federal state is to be established and built." The decision also provided for constituting the people's administration,” the government of the Macedonian state, the functions of which were, for the time being, to be performed by the Presidium of ASNOM". Furthermore, in structuring executive authority, this document provided for the formation of "a required number of departments for the various branches of state administration" which were to perform the function of ministries until a government was established. This initial constitution for Macedonia was further supplemented by ASNOM with a definition of essential and guaranteed civil rights. The Declaration on Citizens' Rights stated that all citizens of Macedonia "are equal before the law, irrespective of their nationality, sex, race and religion." The Declaration also guaranteed the rights of ethnic minorities "to a free national life." The minorities are further mentioned in the ASNOM Manifesto, wherein the freedom and equality of all nationalities in Macedonia is proclaimed." (source: Mi-Am publishing)

The first constitution of People Republic of Macedonia 31/12/1946

The first constitutional period of Macedonia in a formal sense began with the introduction of the Constitution of Popular Republic of Macedonia on the 31st December 1946. The first constitution of Macedonia was passed and proclaimed by the Constitutional Assembly of the Popular Republic of Macedonia, which, after having passed the Constitution, continued its work as a regular assembly. Apart from its constitutional and legal significance as the highest act of the country, this constitution also had a particular political importance, because it was a document through which the Macedonian state was constitutionally established, and therefore, generally recognized. The constitution of 1946 first set out the character of the state and the way in which it was to be administered. The People's Republic of Macedonia was established as a people's state in a republican form, in which the Macedonian people, expressing their free will, joined together with the other nations of Yugoslavia and their people's republics on the principle of equality to form a common federal state - the FPRY. This definition of the republic exclusively expressed its state legal element, which was necessary and justified during that period, in order to express its constituting as a state. In this definition, there are also elements of the principle of self-determination of the people, expressed in a voluntarily and freely expressed will to join together with the other nations of Yugoslavia. 10. Citizens Against the Seven-Period School Day in NEISD

We the students of NEISD, in order to enhance our education, believe that the A/B schedule should be retained, and not switched to a seven-period day. As it is now, we have four periods a day, alternating classes every other day. Eight classes, each 90 minutes long.

If it were switched, we would go to seven periods every day, each roughly 45 minutes long. This would eliminate the eighth class, making it more difficult to take electives related to future occupational interests. In addition, shortening the classes would increase the homework load each day, which would lead to a decrease in interest and a lower homework completion rate. This increased homework would force students to stay awake late at night to complete work due the next day. Students would have less time to study in class and at home, and general performance would fall. This would not be very beneficial in moving towards our goal of becoming a "Distinguished Campus," and having a 95% attendance rate.

Finally, with more periods each day, there would be less time for passing between classes. As it is, going from the top floor of one building, across campus, and up to the top floor of the other building cuts the current eight minutes close. If it were shortened, there would be many more tardies, resulting in more students reaching the tardy limit and getting in trouble even further.

11. North Kelvin Meadow Campaign

The North Kelvin Meadow Campaign (www.northkelvinmeadow.com) is a voluntary community organisation in Glasgow. At the end of 2008, volunteers began to transform a derelict playing field into an inspiring green space, including a meadow, woodland, a community orchard and allotments.

Glasgow council wants to sell the land for flats, but local people feel strongly that it should remain a community space and do not want these flats on the land. Local authorities are required by law to provide allotment sites and Cosla, the umbrella body for Scotland's councils, has compiled a report which urges local authorities to acquire, manage and develop more land for allotments.

Currently the waiting list for allotments in the area is eight years. Please support us by signing the petition and writing to your MP, MSP and Glasgow Council about it! Thanks.

12. Save Ben's Secret Garden

Ben Carden is being threatened with eviction from his private 2.5 acre plot of land. Since buying this land, he has improved the visual appearance by landscaping and creating a wildlife haven; the land was previously a fly tip area. He runs his business Cardens Gardens from this dwelling, creating jobs for up to 10 people.

Ben has 2 children and if he is evicted he will need to be re-homed by the Council taking up limited housing accommodation. His 2 boys may be restricted to living in a flat instead of growing up in space and fresh air. He will also lose his business and may have to rely on social security through no fault of his own and this will include his employees. Ben has also made a bund, to lesson the noise pollution for his neighbours and himself, this also screens the A1(M). Ben is living in a mobile home, at the present time he cannot afford to get onto the housing market.

Ben was born and raised in Welwyn Garden City; after 3 generations should Ben and his sons have the right to remain in Welwyn Garden City vesinity and his neighbours have the right not to see the A1(M)?

14. Remove The Butty Bar

The 'Butty Bar +' was subject to a compulsory purchase order some 5 years (approx 2003). As such it was purchased by the North West Regional Development Agency, with the understanding that it would be demolished shortly afterwards.

The intention of this was to remove the building and use the space it occupies to create something environmentally enriching and more in keeping with the area.

Ancoats is an area of huge investment, and one of Conservation. Despite this the 'Butty Bar +' is still standing to this date with no plans for demolition or improvements on the table. The building is now in an ever failing state of repair and the car-park is generally full of litter etc.

The aim of this petition is to show the NWrDA that local residents consider this building to be a detraction from the conservation area that is Ancoats, and that definitive action needs to be taken to demolish the building and replace with something appropriate.

In the short term we also propose that the NWrDA tidy up the building and its surrounding land.

***IMPORTANT NEWS /UPDATE:***

An NWDA spokesperson said May 2009:
Hello Phill,

I've made enquiries about the building on Pickford Street. My colleagues in New East Manchester's have updated me on the proposals for this building.

You are no doubt already aware that the building is in the Ancoats conservation area. A policy is in place that prevents demolition of buildings until a future use for the site has been identified and the resources necessary have been secured. Recently however NWDA drew up a list of a number of building it felt warranted demolition even if a permanent future use has not been identified. The former sandwich shop on Pickford Street was one of these and the case for it's demolition has been accepted. In fact it was the only one on the list that was. The short-term intention will be to demolish the building, and tarmac over and secure with drop down bollards and boundary treatment. This will significantly reduce the level and range of antisocial behaviour and other activity you referred to in your email.

NWDA are to submit a planning application to Manchester City Council's Planning Department soon. Residents in the immediate area should receive notice of this, providing more details. It is estimated that, subject to planning approval, the start on site for demolition will be in around 6 months time.

Furthermore Christine Pulford, the Street Environment Manager has made a visit to the site this morning and requested that both NWDA (owners of the former sandwich shop) and Braemar (your managing agent) take action to clear of the litter she found on both sites. Christine will continue to monitor sites in and around Ancoats and report/request clean up as and when identified. Residents reporting issues however will assist her in this task. I would like to thank you therefore for bringing this to my attention.

I hope you are happy with the contents in this email.

16. Save the pit bulls!

This petition is specifically for Iowa. Some people are trying to get pit bulls banned because of the attacks that have been publicly exploited and we need to show them the truth about the kind hearted pit bulls that we all know and love.

Please help me show them the reality that only the owner is responsible and that the facts are in the pit bulls favor!!! Pit bulls are only 2 percent of the annual canine attacks and are one of the top tested breeds for temperament.

More labs and mixed breeds are responsible for attacks each year yet they are not the ones being banned! I personally think that if this horrible ban does pass that EVERY other breed that ranks higher on the annual attacks should be banned also but will it happen? I highly doubt it. Please make the right decision!

17. Get Hornet Internet in Manchester Student Village North

Fed up with the internet in MSV? Think you've paid too much for something that barely works? Then sign this petition to get Hornet Internet in the student village!

Since moving into MSV last year in September 2007 I regrettably signed up for the deluxe package of a 2mb connection for a whopping £250. Firstly this is an outrage to charge so much for us students to pay. It’s even more frustrating that you don't always get the full bandwidth speed. Downloading or streaming anything is a joke as it takes bloody ages. I for one ain’t gonna take it no more so I’ve created this petition to get Hornet to supply the internet here in MSV.

On average I can download around 50 kb/s which is 5 times slower than what I should be getting (~250kb/s). I can only imagine what people on the lower package (512kps) are experiencing.

Hornet Internet is so much better in terms of that its cheaper (Private Halls that Hornet provides for charge around £100), faster (10mb connection to each room) and more importantly is more badass than CableCom.

If anyone lived in Halls where Hornet is provided will know that it’s the fastest thing ever and it was so good downloading at 1mb/s.

In conclusion please help me by supporting this petition and I will get into contact with MSV management to see if we can get into some kind of agreement.

Thank You

18. The Environment Needs OUR Help!

The background information is pretty much that our environment is turning into a dump.

Rainforests are being cut down, and the ozone layer is completely disappearing. Global warming is for a fact, happening. The evidence of global warming is Al Gore's documentation called "An Inconvenient Truth".

Many animals are dying because of global warming, such as polar bears and penguins. They are dying at increasing rates and will end up extinct. In the documentation "An Inconvenient Truth", Al Gore shows stunning statistics.

The one that I found most stunning is that if we continue on like this, some of our major cities will be totally underwater because of the melting ice from the north and south poles. Some of the places are New York City, Miami, Houston, and many others.

22. Equality in North Carolina Schools, No Matter What

What do you do when you have a problem at school? Do you talk to a teacher? Do you talk to a guidance counselor? What if someone were to threaten you because you were of a different race or religion? You’d tell someone. You’d make sure that the prejudice against you wasn’t acted upon. Why? Because it’s not right.

To threaten someone with bodily harm, whether or not there is intention to actually carry out the threat, based on race or religion or social status is absolutely not acceptable.

But what if you were threatened because you were gay or lesbian? What if you were harassed because of your bisexuality? What if you were denied basic rights because you were transgender? Would it be different? Would you simply keep quiet?

Issues of sexuality and gender-identity are not specifically addressed in North Carolina School Laws. Though there is a general safety policy protecting all students, issues relating specifically to your sexuality or gender may not apply.

So what do you do? How do you make it equal for everyone, despite sexuality, gender, race, ethnicity, ability, religion, social standing or identity? You specify the rules. You add “due to race, religion, sexuality, gender, or other factors” to the end of the harassment and bullying policies. You make hate-crimes absolutely unacceptable.

How do you do that? First off, you can sign this petition. It is moving to make sexuality and gender-identity or expression part of the hate crimes policy with in North Carolina public schools. It takes a stand on your behalf. So stand with us.

Let North Carolina legislators know that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students have rights too and that those rights need to be included within policy. Help us bring equality to North Carolina schools.

Please see http://sbepolicy.dpi.state.nc.us/policies/SS-A-007.asp?pri=03&cat=A&pol=007&acr=SS for exact policy text.

28. North Stonington Residents Against Zone/Regulation Change for Garden Court

Garden Court, LLC has submitted a Zone regulation change to build a complex of 408 one and two bedroom units in 17, four story residential buildings. Each building will house 24 units.

The location on Boombridge Rd., will not be able to handle the traffic that will be generated as it is a small, narrow, winding country road and to add an additional 400+ cars per day would make the road a hazardous one. The Lewis Farm constantly has farm equipment and often has the cows or bulls in the road moving them to different fields.

The farms have gotten tax breaks to keep the town rural and this would be located right near Lewis farm. This would take away from the historical farm and pose a hazard to the farm animals.

The additional polution created be automobile emmissions would also be unhealthy for the farm animals. People drive fast now down Boombridge (which is 35) an additional increase in travel would make this country road into a small highway.

29. Stop NY Fed Transfer of North Korean $25 Million

The Six-Party denuclearization talks with North Korea halted earlier this year, because the US froze $25 million of accounts in Banco Delta Asia in Macau. So far, the Bank of China and Wachovia Bank have declined requests from the US State Department to transfer these funds back to North Korea.

State's newest request is for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to transfer the funds back to North Korea. Lee Bollinger is a Class C director on the board of directors.

Apart from aiding a regime that is one of the world's most egregious human rights violators, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York transfer would also be in violation of: Section 311 of the USA Patriot Act, United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, and Sections 1956-1957 of US Criminal Code, Title 18.
