2. Stop the Machinery of Occupation: Boycott Israel

Vermonters for a Just Peace in Palestine/Israel

“There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part; you can’t even tacitly take part, and you’ve got to put your bodies upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop.” - Mario Savio, Student Leader of the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, 1964

More than four decades of Israeli military occupation have passed, eviscerating the dream of building a viable, sovereign Palestinian state. 500,000 Jewish settlers now live in segregated, heavily fortified colonies in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in violation of international law. They control most of the territory’s best land and water resources—land and water stolen from Palestinians. In Gaza, 1.5 million Palestinians, most of them refugees and terribly poor, are trapped in the world’s largest “open-air prison.”

Closures, checkpoints and roadblocks, targeted assassinations and settler terrorism, home demolitions, military incursions and arbitrary detentions, an economic blockade and massive “Separation Wall,” razed farm land, olive groves and fruit orchards, poisoned wells and livestock, interminable delays in movement—these measures of collective punishment, colonization and ethnic-racial separation make normal life impossible for Palestinians in the occupied territories.

For all who cherish justice and liberty it is time to unite in the cause of freedom for the Palestinian people and send an unequivocal message of nonviolent resistance to the state of Israel, just as we did to South Africa’s Apartheid regime in the 1980s.

It is time to BOYCOTT Israel and all businesses, academic centers and cultural institutions that support, maintain or benefit from the occupation of the Palestinian territories.

In 2005, over 170 civic organizations representing the breadth of Palestinian society issued a historic joint call to the world:

"We, representatives of Palestinian civil society, call upon international civil society organizations and people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era. We appeal to you to pressure your respective states to impose embargoes and sanctions against Israel. We also invite conscientious Israelis to support this Call, for the sake of justice and genuine peace...."

6. Keep the Middle East free from nukes

Appeal for a nuclear free Middle East

The Middle East is the most militarized area on earth. It is the first in military spending internationally, in GDP percentages. It absorbs almost 30% of the global arms exports. It has been tested by foreign interventions, by war bloodbaths, occupations and human rights violations, first among the last the right of the Palestinian people to their own state within the 1967 borders.

The potential transformation of the Middle East to an area of nuclear rivalry will aggravate the situation dramatically. The threat to the international security will be huge. The risk of nuclear weapons proliferation in the Middle East is greater than anywhere else. The illegal Israeli nuclear arsenal already exists but other states in the region may also succumb to the temptation to obtain nuclear arms in the future.

On the other hand, it must be noted that this issue is used as a pretext for new interventions and war threats. We remember the big lie of the possession of nuclear weapons by Sadam which both Bush and Blair used as an excuse to invade Iraq in 2003. The mushrooming of nuclear plants is another source of worry. The question marks about their security have not been answered, especially in this troubled region, while nuclear waste could well turn the Mediterranean into a dead sea and the neighboring countries into toxic dumping areas.

With all this in mind, we consider the declaration of the Middle East zone free of nuclear and other mass destruction weapons to be of paramount importance. It is a life saving proposal for the region and the whole world; a big step forward in the struggle for the complete elimination of nuclear arms. We ask the implementation of the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and support the convocation of a UN international Conference to achieve this aim.

We call on Israel, the only state in the region which has not become a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to do so without delay. There is no excuse for the acquisition of nuclear arms by any country. These weapons do not constitute defensive means and there is no defense against them. The International Court of Hague has declared illegal the threat or use of nuclear weapons in a 1996 advisory opinion.

We the undersigned appeal for a coordinated international citizens’ mobilization, common action of all the peace, antinuclear, environmental and other social organizations. Let us all join the common struggle. For peace and life. So that the Middle East does not become a new Hiroshima. So that a global nuclear holocaust does not originate in this long suffering area.

7. STOP Israel's War Crimes in Gaza - Palestine Solidarity

The world has looked on aghast as more and more details emerge of the violent attack by the Israeli Government on the unarmed flotilla of boats carrying essential medical supplies to the besieged people of Gaza. Tens of people have been killed and scores more injured.

Those who survived the brutal attack have been illegally imprisoned, without access to legal representatives.

8. We stand with Israel against Terror and Provocation

Unproductive taxpayer-funded elements and noisy rent-a-crowd activists always have time on their hands to organise a 'spontaneous demonstration' to express their 'outrage' and condemn Israel. All the while decent Aussies are working to earn the taxes to support Australia's finest examples of our multicultural welfare state.

So for those good people standing with Israel in this time of need, but too busy to paint banners and go out into the streets, here's a forum to show where our loyalties lie.

Israelis, who are not only Jews but - amongst others - also Christians, Atheists, Moslems, Humanist and Buddhists, live at the razor-sharp edge of the blade which Islamic state-sponsored fascism and world-wide Islamic terrorism holds at the throat of all civilised nations. Let us not forget Israel is the only truly democratic and free nation respecting the rule of law and separation of powers in this part of the world, a lone outpost of Western civilisation.

Those 'peace activists' aboard the vessel 'Marvi Marmara' (which was part of this so-called 'aid convoy') waited with arms at the ready and attacked most viciously the moment Israeli defence force personnel boarded. These elements come from the same school as those firing RPGs from school grounds and shooting their AK47s hidden behind pregnant women pushing prams.

Instead of scolding Israel for defending it's citizens from more terror, our politicians and media should condemn 'Hamas' and their 5th brigade for organising this provocation, which led only to more unnecessary bloodshed, senseless death and suffering.

We intend to hand our 'Letter of Support' with all signatory names to the Embassy of Israel in Australia.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PETITION CLOSES SATURDAY 12 JUNE AT 6PM EASTERN AUSTRALIAN TIME

9. We call on the Australian Government to cut ties with Israel

On 30th May 2010, under the cover of darkness, the Israeli military hijacked the Free Gaza Movement flotilla in international waters. During this illegal act of what can only be described as piracy, at least 15 international peace activists were killed and scores were wounded.

The ship was carrying tons of desperately needed humanitarian aid for the besieged people of Gaza. The items on board the ships included water purification equipment, cement, generators, prefabricated homes, chocolate, crayons, wheelchairs, crutches, basketballs, and tons of paper to be used by schoolkids.

There was absolutely no need for Israel to attack this ship and murder unarmed peace activists.

16. Stop the Humanitarian Catastrophe in Yemen

Houthis or in general Zaidi Shias form about 40 to 45% of the Yemen population. They are a majority in the Northern Yemen province of Sa'ada, bordering with Saudi Arabia. Since 2004, the Yemeni government has launched 5 military campaigns against them. The most recent ongoing assault, (the sixth one), “Operation Scorched Earth” by the Yemeni government started in August 2009.

“Scorched earth” policy according to Wikipedia is “A military strategy which involves destroying anything that might be useful for the enemy while advancing through or withdrawing from an area. Its modern usage includes the destruction of infrastructure such as shelters, transportation, communications and industrial resources. This practice may be carried out in enemy territory or its own home territory”. Similar tactic was used by Israeli Armed Forces on Gaza, when its military destroyed vast portions of Gaza.

The Saudi Arabian Armed Forces also joined the offensive against the Northern Yemen in November 2009, accusing Houthis of attacking one of the Saudi check points near the border. The Houthis deny the allegations by stating that they cannot afford to provoke another army. Saudis have since been attacking them by missiles but also using unconventional chemical weapons such as phosphorus bombs which are banned under the Geneva Convention.

This conflict has resulted in numerous civilian casualties and has displaced thousands of people. The laws of war require the parties in an armed conflict to take all feasible precautions to spare the civilian population and their properties. Aid agencies have been trying to get permission to reach and help all civilians in need of assistance. But security problems and restrictive Yemeni government policies have prevented the agencies from doing so. To make matters worse, Riyadh continues to forcibly return Yemenis who have fled to Saudi Arabia, according to press TV sources.

BACKGROUND:

The Zaidi Shias are a majority in Sa'ada province, have faced many years of repression at the hands of Yemeni government who is trying to impose Wahabi Beliefs on them. This province is one of the poorest in Yemen, which is already facing many economic challenges.

Houthis lost their Zaidi Imamate rule in 1962 in Sa'ada province. In 2004, one of the Zaidi leaders Hussein Badreddin Al-Houthi was killed by the Yemeni Government. The Houthis leader who was against theYemeni government ties with US, was accused of fighting for Shia rights and organizing anti-US protests.
Since 2004 there have been intermittent assaults on the Houthis by the Yemeni Military. In August 2009 the government accused the Houthis of violating a ceasefire by taking foreigners hostage earlier in the year. Yemeni Government used these allegations as a premise for launching this recent war. While the government claims that it is targeting Houthi positions, the Houthi fighters argue that the forces led by Sana'a are engaging in the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians.

There are no clear estimates available about the casualties in the province of Sa'ada since 2004 or in the recent wave of violence as Yemen Government prevents the presence of independent news agencies in the area. According to UN estimates, however, during the past five years, up to 175,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Sa'ada to take refuge in overcrowded camps set up by the international body. The two governments have also blocked the shipment of humanitarian aid into the under-siege territory.

It is now up to the international community to make concerted efforts to defuse the situation and prevent the further loss of innocent Yemenis in a conflict that seems to have no end in sight. There is a great need for all voices of conscience to rise to the occasion and raise awareness about this humanitarian crisis.

18. Protest against Human Rights Violation in Iran on "National Student Day"

December 7th, is the National Student Day, named after the day in 1953, 100 days after the CIA engineered coup d’état against the legitimate government of Iranian Prime Minister, late Dr. Mosadegh.

On this ever living day of the Iranian contemporary history, armed forces of Shah invaded campus of Tehran University and fired at peaceful protesting students. Three students were shot dead during the brutal attack.

Since then, Iranian students have religiously commemorated this day in their long and painful struggle for achieving democracy for Iran, and often have been confronted by the authorities.

Since the fraudulent presidential election of June 12th 2009, Iranian universities have staged massive and vocal protests against the illegitimate government of Ahmadi Nejad.

During the last six months, the Police force, Revolutionary Guards and their generously paid militia, Basij, have shot dead a number of innocent people, arrested thousands, invaded hundreds of campuses, dormitories and houses of defiant students.
Numerous impendent academics have been expelled, several reformist newspapers and student newsletters have been banned.

Detained reformists are believed to have been tortured in an attempt to force them into TV "confessions" of a foreign-led plot against the Islamic regime.

English

The official Iranian news agency, IRNA, recently announced clear threats against critics and opponents of the Islamic Republic of Iran who are living outside the country.

These threats have been made by Masoud Jazayeri, the deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces. According to him, the Iranian government has identified these critics and opponents and will take appropriate measures against them.

Against the background of previous terrorist attacks against exiled opponents, such as Dr. Shapour Bakhtiar in Paris, Prime Minister under the Shah regime; Dr. Qasemlu Rahman, the Kurdish politician and General Secretary of the Democratic Party Kurdistan-Iran (DPK – I) in Vienna, as well as the Mykonos attack in a restaurant in Berlin, in which four opposition representatives were murdered, further attacks are feared. However, this time the threats are not only made against opponents and political officials, but also against politically active students, artists and dissenters.

We, the undersigned, call upon all governments of the European Union to take these threats seriously, to press the Islamic Republic of Iran to take an official position and to take into account the announced attacks in future diplomatic relations with Iran.

Deutsch:

22. Save Bahman (shirko) Maarefi from Execution

Excellency Ban Ki Moon,

The Iranian regime is ready to yet commit another crime!! After recent execution of Ehsan, they are now determined to take Shirkoo’s life away.

Bahman Moaarefi known as Shirko, a 30 year old Kurd activist from Banneh (a city of Kurdistan province) has been recognized as Mohareb (god’s enemy) by the Iranian judicial system! He has been charged with propaganda against the regime and fight against the god which in the Islamic regime of Iran is a crime punishable by death.

He was arrested on November 1st, 2007 and has been in detention at Saghez’s intelligence office. Currently he is prohibited from having visitors in detention.

In preparation for his execution, Shirko Moaarefi was transferred to solitary confinement at Saghez central prison. He is one of the Kurd civil activist who was arrested in Saghez last year and was sentenced to death after being interrogated and severely tortured.

He may be taken for execution unannounced, as his lawyer Khalil Bahramian has confirmed the news of Shirko’s transfer to solitary confinement. Based on the unannounced and expeditious execution of Ehsan Fatahyan, the regime might take the same position and execute Shirko in 1-2 days.

We are asking you to please do not remain silent during these critical days as the Islamic regime will not hesitate taking this young activist’s life!

Thank you in advance for all your hard work.

Best Regards,

23. Release Hossein 'Hoder' Derakhshan from Evin Prison

Update: September 21, 2010 Trial has been held and the prosecutor has requested the death penalty by execution for Hossein 'Hoder' Derakhshan. The sentencing verdict has not been delivered to the court but the risk is implied. Please sign and forward petition to all contacts. Thank you.

Hossein 'Hoder' Derakhshan is an Iranian-Canadian Blogger, journalist, and internet activist. He has been advocating the use of the internet as a means for social and political reform in Iran.

He is credited with starting the blogging revolution in Iran and is called by many journalists as the father of Persian blogging or the 'Blogfather'. He also helped to promote podcasting in Iran. His weblog, like some other political Persian blogs and websites, has been blocked (or filtered) by the government in Iran, since 2004

On leaving Iran, he was shortly detained and summoned to the Ministry of Intelligence. A few days later he was interrogated by an intelligence official over the content of his blog and was forced to sign an apology before being allowed to leave Iran.

After returning to iran On November 1, 2008, Derakhshan was arrested at his family home in Tehran.
As of late April 2009, the New York Times stated that Derakhshan remained under detention and had not been charged. However, by late October 2009, approaching the one-year anniversary of his arrest, his family began speaking out to Persian and English-language media. His father, Hassan Derakhshan, most notably released an open letter to the new head of the Iranian Judiciary, Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani. asking for more information about his son's detention.

24. Abolish the Kafeel (sponsorship) System

In order to gain entry to Kuwait and become a resident, one must have received a work permit and a sponsorship offer.

A sponsor (kafeel) is a person or a company that brings workers to Kuwait. In the case where one is fired, they lose their sponsor and therefore have no grounds to stay in the country, and are therefore forced to leave.

Often, aspiring workers are left with no choice but to buy a residency from a residency trader. This disrupts the economy, breaks the cycle, and allows all types of people into our society - not to mention illegal.

Although it is illegal, the system encourages it, therefore we aim to amend this system.

27. Isa (Issa) Saharkhiz: Request for his release from Prison

On 13 June 2009 it was announced that President Ahmadinejad had won the presidential election. Hundreds of thousands of Iranians were subjected to draconian restrictions by the Iranian authorities of the right to freedom of expression.

Access to the Internet was and continues to be blocked or severely disturbed. Since the announcement of the election results, it is prohibited for Iranian newspapers to publish information about the unrest. Foreign journalists were banned from the streets, and some foreign reporters were expelled from the country.

According to Amnesty International representatives investigations, at least 2277 people were arrested by the police or the Basij militia during and after demonstrations across the country since 12 June 2009. This includes information from those close to well-known political figures such as Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi, and former President Khatami, who supported the campaign of Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Even human rights defenders and journalists have been arrested. On 16 June 2009, the lawyer and human rights defenders in detention Abdolfattah Soltani (UA-160/2009 of 19 June 2009). Journalist Saeed Hajjarian, who formerly belonged to the City Council of Tehran, and was advisor to former President Mohammad Khatami, was arrested on 16 June 2009. Since an attack in 2000, he is confined to a wheelchair. He was transferred from Evin prison to hospital on 3rd July 2009 (UA-159/2009 of 18 June 2009). On 24 June 2009 70 university graduates were arrested as they left a meeting with Mir Hossein Mousavi in his office. All but four were later released.

Among the detainees are Dr Ghorban Behzadian, the campaign manager of Mir Hossein Mousavi, and Ardeshir Amir Arjomand, a law professor at the Shahid Beheshti University. Hundreds more people were arrested during the demonstrations against the election results by security forces using excessive force. Many were beaten and killed by authorities. A total of 20 deaths were originally claimed. The actual number of fatalities, however, is far higher.

The journalist Issa Saharkhiz was arrested on 4 July 2009. Amnesty International considers him a prisoner of conscience, held in prison solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression - including his opinion about the presidential elections. Issa Saharkhiz is in danger of being tortured or mistreated in other ways.

The journalist had supported the presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi in the election campaign. He was arrested on the 4th July in northern Iran and taken to an unknown place. Although his family and his lawyer have been trying to get information about the arrest of Issa Saharkhiz and his place of detention, the Iranian authorities failed to provide this information for a considerable time. It is now known He has been held at Evin Prison since July 4, 2009.

Update: Isa Saharkhiz, renowned journalist, was transferred from Evin to Rajai Shahr prison last year after the execution of a number of Kurdish citizens. Rajai Shahr prison is notorious for its inhumane conditions and prison officials are generally indifferent towards the health and well being of prisoners.

30. Support Ashraf

Ashraf residents are protected persons who signed an agreement with the US government according to which the US assumed their protection.

However, the agreement was violated by transferring this responsibility to the Iraqi government. This initiated a humanitarian catastrophe against the residents.
