31. Raising awareness of depression in at-risk groups
We're very concerned at the high suicide rate in young gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) people and are very keen to see them gain a strong representation in the mental health arena. In short, we want to make sure that we look after these young people.
According to the rough stats we have at hand, people in the GLBTI community are four times more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to fall victim to mental illness, including depression and suicide.
The problem is that we don't really know the actual percentage of GLBTI people who suffer, because we suspect that many of these young people don't ever get the chance to seek help. We are determined to change that.
Beyond Blue (the national depression initiative) in conjunction with Adelaide Health Technology Assessment (part of The University of Adelaide) have produced a draft paper entitled, 'Clinical Practical Guidelines: Depression in Adolescents and Young Adults.'
We would like to have the GLBTI community represented in these guidelines as a group of young people who are at very high risk of mental illness.
32. Legalise Same Sex Marriage in Australia
Same-sex marriages are currently not permitted under Australian federal law. Since 2004, the Marriage Act 1961 has defined marriage as "the union of a man and a woman". In addition, Australian law expressly declares that unions between same-sex couples entered into outside the country are not to be recognised as marriage in Australia.
In all states and territories, cohabiting same-sex couples are recognised as de facto couples, and have the same rights as cohabiting heterosexual couples under state law. Furthermore, same-sex couples have access to domestic partnership registries in Tasmania and Victoria. Civil partnerships are performed in the Australian Capital Territory.
In November 2008, the Australian Parliament passed laws that recognised same-sex couples in federal law, offering them the same rights as unmarried heterosexual couples in areas such as taxation, social security and health, aged care and employment. This means that same-sex couples who can prove they are in a de facto relationship have most of the rights of married couples since 1 July 2009. Nevertheless, despite equality of rights, Australia does not have a national registered partnership or civil union scheme.
In August 2009, a same-sex marriage bill was introduced by a member of the Australian Greens who pleaded with the government to take into mind that the majority of Australians support same-sex marriage and thereby pass such legislation. The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee is currently reviewing the bill.
The majority of Australians do support same sex marriage. At the present time, the only argument against same sex marriage is religion which claims that marriage is a sacred union between man and woman. The majority of Australians are no longer married in a church, nor blessed by a religious body, but more often in more contemporary venues by celebrants etc.
33. Represent LGBT people in mainstream advertising
LGBT people are continually mis- or under-represented in the media. As found in GLAAD's 2008 study (see link 1) only 1.1% of all regular characters in the 2007-08 broadcast television schedule were LGBT.
Advertising (especially in the prime time 'advert breaks') reaches a massive audience (an average of about 9 million viewers) and can help to present a very positive message to those who need/would benefit from it.
IKEA have had lots of adverts featuring LGB&T people, both on TV and in print. Their catalogues also feature gay couples and families. In 2007, IKEA ran an ad campaign titled 'Living Room,' which aired across Europe and America. The ad featured a series of families in different living rooms, ending with a bi-racial gay male couple and their daughter, and the voiceover: 'Why shouldn't sofas come in flavours, just like families?' The ad won an award in America from the Commercial Closet Association, a charity which campaigns for positive LGB recognition in advertising. (Link 2)
DFS adverts famously centre around a 'living area' with a family, couple or person in them (Link 3). None of these have ever featured an LGBT family or couple and could quite easily do so.
The 'Pink Pound' (the LGBT market) is worth an estimated £70 million per year in the UK (Link 4).

34. Form A Gay-Straight Alliance at Robert E. Lee High School
Robert E. Lee High School is a public school located in Montgomery, Alabama. They have been given a bad reputation over the past few years but the school itself is wonderful and has many great people. Though, they do not have a Gay-Straight Alliance [GSA].
This petition is encouraging a GSA in the school to help those who must hide who they are, and those who have no one to turn to.
A GSA would create a safe and welcoming environment for students to go and be accepted openly regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It would also give students the chance to participate in LGBT community events such as the Day of Silence, National Coming Out Day, and No Name Calling Week.
The group itself doesn't even have to be named "Gay-Straight Alliance," due to the misconceptiont that this is only a dating service for LGBT teens.
Many other names are avaliable, such as "Project Rainbow," "Pride Alliance," "Common Ground," "Coexist", "Spectrum," or even the "Straight-Gay Alliance." It is possible to come up with other creative names, but these are simply suggestions.
As a sophmore attending Lee High School, and an LGBT teen myself, I personally feel there is no where to turn within the school for advice or solace. I feel alone and constantly question if maybe there are others like me? The idea for a GSA came to me because there might jsut be other students who seek help, or agree [even if they are straight] that LGBT people are equal and there should be no violence towards them. I am a member of the Lee P.A.W.S. Club which is all about animals, so I do have experience with clubs.
My ultimate goals for the GSA would be to promote acceptance throughout the school, prevent violence against other LGBT students, promote and encourage participation in fun and active events, notice those straight people who do accept LGBT people for who they are,and to give a safe place to LGBT students where they can come together for help, advice, and community activities.
35. Petition to Pass HB444 Relating to Civil Unions
HB 444 HD1 is a bill to enact civil unions in Hawaii extending rights and benefits to same sex couples.
HB 444, Hawaii's Civil Union Bill, does not "take away" the rights of the majority, but extends them to a minority whose relationships and children deserve the same assurances, rights, protections, and opportunities our state is committed to giving all of its citizens.
Time is running out and your support is critical now. There's still time for you to make a difference for the families we value in our hearts, our homes, and our communities.
On Thursday, March 26, 2009 the New Hampshire House will vote on two very important House Bills;
HB436 will grant marriage equality to gays and lesbians. Civil unions are a legal status created solely for gay/lesbian couples. Even if there were not the significant inequities in the way the law treats marriages and civil unions, the fact that a civil union remains a separate status for gay people represents real and powerful discrimination. Our constitution requires legal equality for all.
Excluding gay/lesbian couples from marriage or segregating them with separate institutions, like civil unions -- marks them, and the thousands of children raised by them in NH, as less worthy than other citizens.
(It is also worth noting that HB436 upholds freedom of religion. This bill is about civil marriage, and leaves decisions about religious ceremonies to faith leaders.)
HB415 is the anti-discrimination act for gender identity and expression. This bill defines gender identity and expression and will add it to the list of classes of people protected from discrimination. No one should ever be fired from their job or targeted for a "Hate Crime" due to any discriminating factor, which includes gender identity or expression. Thirteen states and Washington DC already have transgender inclusive laws in place. It is important to send the message that discrimination is ALWAYS wrong!
37. Bring back the Diana Cage Show
Since April 2008, listeners of Sirius Satellite Radio have been able to become more enlightened with the wisdom from author, editor and radio personality Diana Cage.
Not only did Diana provide us with tons of laughs, she shed a whole new light on the GLBT community.
From guest authors, sex professionals and just great people to weekly psychics and open forums about anything under the sun, The Diana Cage show has created a atmosphere where GLBT listeners and straight allies can listen, talk and trust Diana with their comments, concerns and beliefs.
38. Legalise Same-Sex Marriage In Australia
Although we are extremely happy that the General Law Reform Bill 2008 will come into effect by January 2009 , we still want same-sex couples to be able to get legally married.
39. Fight for Gay Marriage and Civil unions in Australia!
We live in a country that is surposed to be full of dreams, ours have yet to come! We do not yet have the legal right to same sex marriage in Australia. Gay and lesbian aussies deserve repect and rights and we love just as heterosexuals love.
We want to get married just like heterosexuals want to get married. So please sign this petition in hoping same sex marriage! .. or even civil unions will become legal in the near future! The closest thing we have is a relationship registry in only 2 states!
Come on Australia, we can do better than that! This petition will be forwarded on to the PM and all head of states! Human Rights = Equal Rights!
40. Allow Same Sex Marriage in Australia
Marriage is about love, not gender.
41. No to a immoral alternative lifestyle lodge
A group is pushing to build a campground that according to their website would be a private resort for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community (Note: That website changed early Wednesday. This is a prior version the planning commission printed.)
Since changed, the website originally featured photographs of same-sex couples embracing one another, kissing, and sharing a bath.
According to the site, three weeks of every month at the campground, would be clothing-optional.
Sexuality is not the only issue neighbors raised with the proposed campground. They worry if the site gets zoned commercial, it will mean more traffic on a narrow road and more noise.
Trying to stop parents from being homophobic just because their child is gay, lesbian or bisexual!
43. Stop Sexual Orientation Discrimination
I had requested the medical documents from the Methodist Hospital of Illinois regarding my daughter, in concern with any defamation my ex-husband may have said about me upon her admittance.
I did not get the opportunity to speak in any family meeting regarding my daughters depression, which sheds light on my daughters current stressors, living situations, risks and so forth.
I was quoted as having minimal contact apparently any phone calls, e-mails attempts to speak with any persons regarding my daughter was left unacknowledged. I also was in disadvantage due to not being notified of my daughter being admitted to the hospital until days later, as I have joint custody and my daughter was in my ex husbands care at the time.
My concerns were made valid when I received the requested medical documentation. At this time I am requesting to have all inaccurate information about me struck from the records.
I expected to read about all the misleading information submitted but was shocked that my sexual orientation is discriminatorily listed as a risk factor, major problem, history of present illness, mental status/psychiatric symptom, reason/precipitating event for admission in regards of my daughter.
44. Gay Rights Group call to legalize same sex marriage
Same sex marriage is currently illegal in the United States, my goal is to get it legalized.
The federal government should have no control over who we citizens fall in love with, it is a matter of the heart, not of the law! Separation of church and state has completely gone down the drain!
The Federal Government needs to decide whether they want to leave marriage up to the churches or if they want to legalize same sex marriage, because illegalizing it is unconstitutional!
My over all point is that just because someone falls in love with the same gender, not because of sex, but because of attraction and personality, they should not be deprived of the same rights that others have just because they marry the opposite sex. Love is love, no matter the religion, race, or gender!
45. Equality for all Californians
Gay Rights Equal Human Rights.
Every day, fellow Californians are denied marriage.. because a few bigoted and hateful people want to force their intolerance on everyone. They claim protecting the sanctity of marriage.. but are statistically the highest group who disgrace marriage through divorce.
46. Stop the Hate
I am sure we have all heard of the horrific protests staged by the Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church. They are the ones who have children holding signs at the funerals of war heroes that say such hateful things as "God Hates Fags".
At the trial of one of Matthew Sheppard's attackers a group of Matthews friends who call themselves "Angel Action" decided to do something about the hateful group. They dressed as Angels with huge wings and blocked the church protesters from view. They stood silently through the whole thing until the Westboro church members actually gave up and left.
They showed that these mean spirited biggots are no better than any other bully. I think we need to take a stand and show them that the same laws which protect their hate mongering also protect the rest of us.
47. Save OUTvideo
FEDERAL ATTORNEY GENERAL CLAMPS DOWN ON GLBTI DVD’S
For six years, OUTvideo has specialised in selling and renting a diverse range of Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgendered and Intersex (GLBTI) titles otherwise unavailable in Australia.
Last week, we were contacted by the Federal Attorney-General’s Office in regard to our distributing material which has not been classified in Australia. We have been instructed by them to remove from sale and rental all unclassified material and we are currently in the process of complying with this order.
Unfortunately, many GLBTI titles never enjoy either a cinematic or DVD release in Australia. Moreover, films classified for theatrical release, must be reclassified for DVD release because DVDs include extra features. Classification is prohibitively expensive for titles for which we may only ever sell and/or rent a handful of copies. Unclassified material constitutes up to two thirds of OUTvideo’s range and customers will notice a drastic reduction in the titles we have available as a result of this action.
This is a substantial financial blow to OUTvideo which is owned and operated by members of our community and contributes generously to community organisations. As OUTvideo sells and rents online throughout Australia, it also represents a dramatic restriction on GLBTI Australians access to visual material representing their unique experience and point of view.
Responses to the news by customers has included the following:
• David – “I was really looking forward to catching up on all the gay themed DVDs… that simply never made it to screen in oz or indeed Darwin”
• Alex – “Where is the freedom of choice for adults over 21?”
• Mark – “This is outrageous anti Australian business discrimination since all the titles are readily available from international websites as personal imports (but at higher cost including postage of course)”
OUTvideo is exploring options including an exemption from the relevant laws on the basis that GLBTI Australians constitute a minority sub-community similar to ethnic/cultural groups. Specialist distributors to these groups also supply unclassified material and import foreign language titles which, like many GLBTI titles, would never be viable local releases. We will keep our customers informed of our progress.
OUTvideo DOES NOT engage in parallel importing and will ALWAYS source local release versions of DVDs where they are available.
The owners and staff of OUTvideo wish to thank all of our customers for their loyalty and patience and assure them that we will continue to do our best to provide the broadest range possible.
48. Nigerian Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Oppression
President Obama,
Please take immediate action to press the Nigerian government to end mistreatment of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people. Speak out openly and strongly against the horribly oppressive anti-gay legislation bill entitled “The Prohibition of Relationships Between Persons of the Same Sex, Celebration of Marriage by Them and for Other Matters Connected Therewith.”
The bill seeks to imprison anyone for:
• membership in a gay group
• attending a gay meeting or protest
• advocating for gay equality
• donating money to a gay organization
• hosting or visiting a gay website
• publication or possession of gay safer sex advice
• renting or selling property to a gay couple
• publishing, selling or loaning a gay book or video
This bill affects not only GLBT people, but the people who love and support them. This bill creates an oppressive environment for everyone. Please take action immediately to stop the oppressive Nigerian Bill, which is a threat to human rights everywhere. If passed this bill would restrict freedoms of GLBT people and defenders of human rights. It would have a devastating effect on the fight against HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. As you said in your Democratic National Convention speech “it is my fundamental belief that I am my brothers keeper.”
Thank you,
Sankofa Way
I hearby demand that June 25th should be declared Gay Girls Day, where we should be allowed to freely celebrate our queerness and have the day off work.
We should be allowed free entry to all gay clubs/pubs/venues on this day as recognition of our continued support for organisations which continually ignore us.
Humans are designed to be heterosexual not gay/lesbian. They can do want they want in their own homes but not in public because it is wrong.
Gay/lesbian couples should not be able to adopt etc because imagine what the child's friends would say if they found out his/her parents were gay/lesbian. Children should also be brought up by a mother and a father, not two mothers or two fathers. They need an influence from both types of parents.
Gay/lesbian marriages should definetely never become legal. The dictionary definition of marriage says that marriage is between a man and a woman.
It should also be illegal to practice homosexuality in public as it is disgusting and the majority of people don't want to see it.
There is nothing wrong with being homosexual as long as they don't do any of the above. They can still be homosexual in their own homes.
51. Yes to Gay and Lesbian Marriage
Gay and Lesbian people are only able to get married in about 1 or 2 states which is soooo not fair to them. I don't know why people think that it is bad for them to get married. They are so stupid.
I know a guy who is gay and he is sooo cool so they should be treated like regular humans because THEY ARE REGULAR HUMANS!
52. No Gay Marriages in Canada
March 1, 2005
First, it will be hard to post this petition without appearing to discriminate against same sex couples. Therefore i would like to apologize in advance to any who are offended.
I am guaranteed freedom of speech, so i ask you only respect my opinion, the same i would do for you.
With that out of the way, let me describe why i want to stop the legalization of gay marriages.
Marriage is currently defined as a union between a man and a woman. This is how it should stay. When i was a child, everything i saw had an imact on me, and the same is true today. I do not want my future kids to see 2 men kissing, and get the idea that that is right. It's just not exactly..... natural.
Men should love women, not each other.
53. Right to Marry in Illinois
I have created this petition to ask the State Legislature to overturn the Illinois DOMA Law and ACLU of Illinois and Lambda Legal to challenge the Illinois DOMA Law:
1996: Anti-Marriage Bill Adopted.
Prohibits marriages "between two individuals of the same sex" and declares such lawful marriages to be "against public policy."
The noggin television channel has a show called degrassi and it has a gay boy on it. At lease from the character info on the noggin website it looks like they act like it's ok and that the other kids on the show should accept it.
Please sign this petiton and start boycotting the noggin television channel on May 21, 2004, this is when I told them I would try to start a boycott if they did not stop showing homosexuality in a positive way on the noggin television channel.
Since AOL took alot of chat hosts from People Connection chat rooms, there has been alot of illegal material being tossed around. People can no longer enter a room and chat, instead they have to deal with people trading pictures and video files containing nudity, child pornography, and other things of sexual nature. This mainly happens in the Gay and Lesbian chats throughout AOL's People Connection. When someone calls on a chat host for help, they tell us they can not help us and to report it. There is too much of it to report, if we reported all of it, we would spend atleast 3 hours in a single room doing nothing but reporting. The chats on AOL are out of hand and something needs done.
The signers of this petition would like to either see a program made to block and take appropriate action against those who violate AOL's Terms of Service in a chat room, or we would like to see AOL put chat hosts back into the Gay and Lesbian People Connection chats.
56. Fair go for gay and lesbian community
This is a petition to try to give gay and lesbian people a fair go in their community.
57. AGAINST ENDORSING HOMOSEXUALITY IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
April 07, 2001
The head of the National Education Association (NEA), Bob Chase, officially endorsed gay activism in public schools at the 2000 gathering of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education network.
We stand against this as parents of children in public schools and concerned citizens.
