62. Flat-Rate Rent Increase Albany Housing Authority

July 28, 2006

Unfair Flat-Rate Rental Increases in Albany Housing Authority.

As you are aware, Albany Housing Authority has recently raised the flat rent rates by fifteen to twenty percent. For many households this will mean a rent increases between $52 and $143 per month.

The idea of living in Public Housing for many families means a sense of security while providing us with the ability to manage better financially.

If we are forced to pay this amount, our families will either have to move and search for housing that is less expensive. This can mean living in conditions that are below standard or remaining in Public Housing and simply having to sacrifice our basic needs such as food, clothing and healthcare.

There has also been a decrease in maintenance workers, and the tenants that have been seeking improvements in their buildings are being overlooked. All this needs to be taken into consideration before agreeing to any increase in our rents.

63. "NO" to English Partnerships' development of wild life haven at Dry Street, Essex

July 12, 2006

In basildon Essex, land in Dry Street and adjacent to the wild life park of Langdon Hills and One Tree Hill is under threat of development from English Partnerships, a government regeneration agency which was asked to put foward land for housing.

English Partnerships wish to build 1,300 dwellings on the site, plus a school, shops, health facilites, offices, & pub.

The area is undoubtedly very rich in wildlife, and its animals include badgers, foxes, bats, rabbits, hare, stoat, weasels, squirrels, adders, grass snakes, lizards, slow worms, great crested newts and other amphibians. Many wild flower species occur, including some that are associated with long-established meadows, like adder's tongue fern, hay rattle and some orchids. The hedges are rich and varied, and they support much wildlife.

A great variety of bird species has been recorded, including summer and winter migrants - from cuckoos and warblers in summer to fieldfares and waxwings in winter, with rare passage migrants turning up on occasion. Winter flocks of lapwings, migrant thrushes and gulls congregate on one of the middle meadows, where earthworms and soil invertebrates must clearly be very numerous. Sparrowhawks, kestrels, owls and woodpeckers (green and spotted) frequent the site, and the marshy areas attract snipe and other species. There are many butterflies and moths, as well as a rich variety of other insects, some of which are so rare that they are on the Red Data Book list.

The land has been under the threat of development for a number of years. Following an earlier 4000 signature petition from all areas presented to Basildon Council the new Master Plan designated this area as open space to eventually be permanently protected as "Green Belt".

However, apparently there were legal issues that needed to be addressed in the plan and they were not resolved before a specified date. Because of this the previous town plan remained in place, which specified the land to be reserved for housing if required. Central government have now changed planning regulations. These new regulations require us to start the process of gathering evidence to fight this development from the beginning again.

So please help us!! sign our petition!

64. Support the Right for All to Return to New Orleans

June 30, 2006

Dear CONGRESSMAN,

We, the undersigned, believe that New Orleans must be redeveloped in a just and sustainable way that allows all low-income residents their Right to Return in accordance with the US international policy on Internally Displaced Persons.

We stand in solidarity with the Survivors Village tent city, and with grassroots affordable housing groups everywhere.

Assistance to displaced persons is ceasing and many low-income residents will be abandoned to face homelessness in the cities where they have been evacuated. Instead of using these past many months to reopen housing, the federal department of Housing and Urban Development, under Secretary Alphonso Jackson, has spent 1.5 million dollars so far to barricade the developments, causing further damage by neglect. Despite this, independent engineers' inspections have shown that thousands of apartments are COMPLETELY UNDAMAGED, and immediately inhabitable.

By denyingthe working poor, largely African American population their Right to Return, Jackson and his supporters are committing an egregious act of systemic racism that we believe must be stopped.

We therefore demand that Jackson immediately reopen all public housing units in the city that are structurally sound and make all necessary repairs so that the remaining units can be opened in a timely fashion.

In this, the worst municipal housing crisis of our time, any suggestion of demolition of viable housing is entirely unacceptable;
We also insist that the Section 8 affordable housing program be returned to pre-Katrina levels, particularly in light of the recent drastic rate increases in the rental market and the widespread property damage due to Hurricane Katrina;

We are unequivocally opposed to all plans that would demolish affordable housing or would in any way reduce availability. We therefore stand in opposition to the HOPEVI program that would make public housing projects "mixed income" with an end result being a dramatic reduction in the number of affordable units as occurred with the redevelopment of St Thomas into River Garden;

We recognize that there has been a municipal trend within the last ten years, particularly with the closure of the St. Thomas Housing Development, to dramatically reduce the amount of affordable housing available in New Orleans.

We see that this municipal trend is connected to the national trend of government ceasing to serve those most in need while private corporations increasingly prosper from their increased ownership of social services, from hospitals to schools to utilities to housing. We oppose all such reforms and budget cuts that benefit the elite by curtailing governmental social services for the disadvantaged;

In conclusion, we believe that in the midst of the dire housing shortage in New Orleans, it is unacceptable for housing authorities to refuse to reopen thousands of undamaged or slightly damaged public housing apartments.

It is even more reprehensible for the planners and officials in charge of the future of this city to neglect the many disadvantaged residents who are an integral part of the social fabric of New Orleans. It is hypocrisy at its worst to call for other nations to follow published US guidelines on the Right to Return for all Internally Displaced Persons while it denies that right to it's own citizens.

We ask that you take a stand alongside the most vulnerable citizens of New Orleans to demand that Alphonso Jackson, the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, allow everyone to come home.

66. Lead free housing for our children

Jan 23, 2006

In march 2005 I rented a home from Dayne Davis Realitor unaware of the serious consequences that would fall upon my one yr old son.

From the fist day we moved in my baby seemed to have changed mentally the things he once did like walking and talking all came to a stop and little by little he seem to get sicker often with high fevers of 106 to viral infections and having to go to the doctor at leat twice a month.

So they decided to give him a lead test and it was my worst fear his levels was at 10. I was contacted by the health dept (Kimberly Noble) to have the home cleaned of lead and was told to contact the landlord. I did and to my despise he gave me a seven day notice and he just recieved my rent money two days prior.

I had just moved in i got the results in June and was informed by the doctor and health dept it was a matter he has to clean. (He refused.) So i got a lawyer (Brian Smith) which informed me of my rights and told me he just can't throw me out because my baby was sick. Mr. Smith also informed my landlord Dayne Davis whom agreed to clean the house if i would not sue him for medical and emotional expenses especially since i was Eight months pregnant at the time. So he had me to leave my home for seven days assuring me the home would be cleaned up and so i did. When i returned home and after the court proceding was stopped i realized that the inside of the home wasent done only the front porch.

I called Dayne Davis and informed him of the situation because paint chips was still in the home he told me they hepa vac the home and it was safe that all i would need to do is bleach the windows and everything would be fine. so i did. The paint started to chip again and i notice my baby was getting sicker, around this time he took me to court to file for eviction two months later in Sept becuase of the funds i wouldnt give him until the home was cleaned which was just for june 2005 after he agreed with my lawyer not to take legal action especially since he wouldnt take my funds anyways.So i payed him and to my surprise my son is getting more violent, angry and now he cant talk anymore, hes also throws horrible temper tantrums and he cant even focus. So i was advised by his family doctor Dr. Saeed that his levels had increased to 15 and to send him to an A.D.H.A specialist Dr. Chheda, whom diagnosed my son with A.D.H.A Behavior conduct disorder, and refers him to a speech, and behavior therapist as well as phychrioist. Hes now deemed mentally retarded and the cause was Lead Poising now he is prescribed medicine to help him focus and calm down. I informed Dayne Davis that i was notified by the health dept for the second time and salem houseing comission(which cleans lead in homes) and they agreed to clean the home with his signature. He refused and torn up my paper then threated me by calling the police all over him signing the paper so i can have a healthY safe living environment.Dayne Davis even went so far to tell me "I DISLIKE YOU PEOPLE" you people he has some neverve, my son could have died over his lack of sincerity and unsafe house. That he was aware unsafe, he lied just to recieve my funds and now my sons life is worth nothing, and i need help.

He also told me " I WANT YOU TO MOVE YOU CANT PROVE THERE IS LEAD IN THE HOUSE IF I EVICT YOU ITS YOUR WORD AGAINST MINE AND I CAN MOVE ANYOTHER FAMILY IN". Please someone whoever has a ear let him hear and whoever has a heart let it speak the truth and help me for my sons sake. My son is too young to understand why hes sick and why he dosent deserve to live in a safe environment.

We have a voice and needs it to be heard, please stop him Dayne Davis before he rents a home to another child this time the child might not be as lucky as mine he/she might not make it. My newborn is only 4 mos and has already been sick often but shes too young to be tested, will someone please help me.

68. "NO PARKING" LINES - HIGH GRANGE HOUSING ESTATE

For the last four years residents of the High Grange Housing Estate have had to live with the passing traffic, and overnight parking of lorries, coming up from the A68 to the Faverdale Industrial Estate.

Although there are many parking areas and roads leading to, and within, the industrial estate which do not affect residents and homes, unfortunately lorries are parking overnight next to residents' homes leaving their engines running for several hours which results in:

- fumes
- noise
- vibration to residents homes
- resident health problems - ie insomnia, stress
- disruption to wildlife
- environmental impact.

A new housing develpment is going to be added next to an established city area. The city is going to try to assess the cost of these new improvments for properties and develpment to our existing residents!

The new developer estimates to cost of this to the City of Dilworth a total of $2,250,000.00 This is a new twist to the plan as this was never discussed in any of the public planning meetings and hearings for this new housing devlopment.

How can the City of Dilworth think they can Make the exisitng home owners pay for the costs of the new developer expanding the city's housing additions??

A Planning Application has been made to Tendring District Council for the building of houses on the Red Cross Site in Manor Lane, Dovercourt. 72. Help preserve our heritage - Save the ADI site as a nature reserve!

Whereas,

In a matter of weeks a contract which will see the sale of the Federal Government's Comland, the owner of the ADI site, to Lend Lease, will be finalised.

Lend Lease claims the development will create jobs for western Sydney as well as provide much-needed housing.

It also claims the 850-hectare regional park, to be managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, will protect the environmental values of the area.

The State Government has already rezoned the land for development as well as the creation of a 850-hectare regional park.

However, the ADI Resident Action Group, wants the entire site saved. This is supported by some of NSW's top scientists who claim that any housing on the site would lead to extinctions of many endangered species.

73. Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) overstepping boundaries

The Housing and Redevelopment Authority helps many low income families find affordable housing, and they help revitalize neighborhoods by encouraging redevelopment of commercial property. The authority also provides assistance with rent and first time home buyers. This petition is dealing with their involvement in the condemnation and development of private property for industrial parks and use of eminent domain to profit private individuals or companies.

74. Cornwall County Council should provide housing fairly

The council give houses to parents and old people but what about the people just starting out, they have no chance the only way you can get a place is to have a kid and thats why so many young people throw away there life because they are desperate. I think it is time that we made a stand. People who grow up in certain areas should be placed before Councils bring other people in.

75. STRONGER RENT LAWS IN NEW YORK NOW!

The New York State Rent laws were weakened in 1997, giving landlords loopholes and incentives to destroy affordable housing across the state (and particularly in NYC)at an unprecedented rate. It is estimated that there will be no rent-regulated apartments in NYC (read: affordable to all but the upper-middle class, no tenants' rights whatsoever) within 10-15 years under the current Rent Laws. The laws come up for renewal this June. If they are not strengthened NY State residents will continue to be displaced, evicted and face higher rents, living at the mercy of the Reals Estate market. Housing is a human right. Please tell the NY State Government that New York City and State should remain an economically diverse place that puts people before profits!

77. Open Public Space at the Old Maple Leaf School Site

In the late 1980's, the Seattle Public schools tore down what was the Maple Leaf elementary school. Since this time, the school district has been deciding what to do with the property.

The Meadowbrook Community Council has approached the public schools, City of Seattle, and other institutions about creating an open space allowing this area to be a recharge acquifer for Thornton Creek.

The Meadowbrook Community Council Open Space Committee would like to see this area remain as open space instead of being developed as housing. This property may be zoned for 18 houses. This will add congestion and traffic to a street that already has issues with traffic.

To support this action, please contact Ron English at Seattle Schools to be put on notice of any votes to occur around this issue. His contact information: renglish@seattleschools.org or 206-252-0651. If the Seattle Public Schools decides to sell, they should do so by community involvement to chose a seller.

79. to let MR.CRAIG keep his apartment

We, the residents of Eastwood community would not like Mr. Craig to vacate his home, because we like his presence in the neighborhood. He helps our kids with bikes, cuts their hair, plays with them, he is a good person in the community and we think that the good will out weigh the bad.

If it was one of your kids, brother, sister, etc, that was living from a wheelchair, you would want the best thing for them. We think that everyone needs another chance. We have just about the safest community in housing. Mr. Craig has no family that he can turn to for help and if you all put him out on the streets his life is going to be shot, because the shelter is not accessible to him so we as a community would like for Mr. Craig to keep his place

If we can help our country in this time of sorrow, then we can do the same for Mr. Craig.

81. Human Rights for Asylum Seekers

Refugees are people who are fleeing from serious danger. ie war, political persecution, famine, economic crisis or natural disasters. In the uk asylum seekers face difficulties and barriers: widespread, indiscriminate detention; poverty; poor housing; poor access to healthcare; lack of training and employment opportunities.
In housing, lower standards are applied for families seeking asylum than for other families. The vouchers refugee families receive are set at a lower value than Income Support levels and stigmatise asylum-seekers. Many children who have lost their families and seek asylum do not receive the same care that is routinely offered to other children in need. When the Government signed up to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991, they made an exception - refugee children. Asylum seekers come here because their lives and/or the wellbeing of their families and homes are in danger. They would not choose to leave there homes and families out of choice. They are the victims of war and famine and drought and poverty and they need our help. we are a country of plenty, and it is our responsibility as a civilised, developed nation and as human beings to give these people a home and a chance and treat them with compassion and respect.
