Petition Tag - fracking
1. MORATORIUM ON HYDRAULIC FRACTURING (FRACKING)
Hydraulic fracturing, commonly referred to as “fracking”, is a technique to extract gas or oil by drilling vertically and often horizontally deep under the earth’s surface.
Fracking injects a mixture of water, sand and chemicals into the wells at high pressure. Fracking uses large amounts of chemicals that contaminate the water supply and can cause cancer, creates wastewater that brings deep-earth contaminants to the surface, releases methane gas into the air that exacerbates climate change and pollutes the air with asthma-causing smog and may cause earthquakes.
Fracking is currently exempt from federal regulation under an exception in The Safe Drinking Water Act and is not regulated and, as a result, the chemicals used are treated as secret corporate property and are not tested and the locations of all the wells are not made public.
2. CSG Coal Seam Gas Moratorium - NSW State
TO THE HONOURABLE THE SPEAKER AND MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF NEW SOUTH WALES.
This Petition of citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House:
· present and potential negative impacts of the Coal Seam Gas Mining (CSG) industry on water quality, farm lands, the environment, communities, residents’ health, property values and tourism;
· that CSG mining produces green house gas emissions – particularly from large scale methane leakage – such that CSG mining has a global warming impact that is as bad as if not worse than coal, over a twenty year period;
· that CSG mining is proven to lower the fresh water table.
3. CSG Coal Seam Gas Moratorium - Senate

Please watch the Documentary on CBC called "Shattered Ground" (The Nature of Things). Fracturing is causing environmental concerns world wide and it is time to put a stop to it until it is better understood and regulated.
Entire Countries and States are banning the process due to health and environmental issues associated with this drilling Practise.
6. Stop the Keystone Pipe Line
Why we should oppose TransCanada’s Keystone XL Pipeline:
TransCanada does not care about landowners:
They have coerced families into signing fraudulent contracts and used eminent domain to take their land by force.
The pipeline threatens our health:
Toxic tar sands are corrosive and spill more often than crude. Spills are too difficult to cleanup. TransCanada’s pipeline threats the health of millions.
Grandmother and Texas landowner, Susan Scott has fought TransCanada for 4 years. She was unable to make an informed decision on TransCanada’s contract, which falsely described the pipeline as transporting crude oil, and not diluted bitumen (toxic tar sands).
Susan was bullied into signing with TransCanada after threats of land seizure by eminent domain.
U.S. pipeline company Enbridge is responsible for the worst tar sands spill in North America--and its total cover-up. Despite the warning signs, Enbridge allowed about one million gallons of toxic tar sands to spill in the Kalamazoo river. Over 200 people became sick, and the river’s fish all died. Enbridge paid for people’s silence and literally buried the spill.
Why we should oppose TransCanada’s Keystone XL Pipeline:
TransCanada has no integrity: They lie to landowners, indigenous communities, and regulators. TransCanada is a corporation that cannot be trusted with our communities’ safety.
Tar sands extraction is the most destructive plan on Earth: It produces four-times the carbon emissions as compared to crude oil. It will destroy a forest the size of NY state.
TransCanada has repeatedly lied about the contents of their pipeline. They claim it will transport crude oil, but we know that it will contain toxic tar sands. The contents of TransCanada’s pipelines are kept secret, even to regulators after dozens of uncleaned toxic spills. TransCanada lies to indigenous communities, and tramples their land and burial grounds.
Lies from TransCanada:
Tar sands exploitation has already destroyed 170,000 acres of ancient forest in Canada. There is no hope for regrowth.
With tar sands, Canada has no plan to comply with the carbon reduction agreements they signed, and their emissions will only make our climate crisis much, much worse.
A HORRIBLE DECISION
Mining companies, such as Titan Energy Ltd, have been granted Coal Seam Gas (CSG) mining exploration licences for Wellington Dam near Bunbury, Kaloorup Road near Busselton and Vasse, the Irwin River in the Mid-West and the Canning Basin in the Kimberley.
WHY DOES THIS AFFECT ME?
Water Quality: CSG extraction poses serious risks to fresh water aquifers. The huge volumes extracted from coal seams can lead to major depletions in aquifers used for drinking water, agriculture, other industries and fire fighting. The chemical residues from fracking may cause potentially irreversible contamination to both ground and surface water sources.
Environment: The dissolved salts from CSG permanently ruin good farming land the water contacts, making it useless for agriculture or pastoral production. It is toxic to aquatic life if spilled into creeks or rivers. The latest research conservatively estimates a methane leakage rate of 3.6% - 7.9% of total well production. Over 20 years, this gives CSG a greenhouse gas footprint at least 20% greater than coal.
Health: Of the compounds typically released by CSG; 25% are carcinogenic; 37% affect the endocrine system; 52% affect the nervous system; 40% affect the immune system; and 100% affect the respiratory system.
8. Ban Industrial Extraction of Natural Gas in Vestal
Neither the federal Environmental Protection Agency, nor the New York Department of Environmental Conservation has stepped forward to protect the people from the plundering of our resources, poisoning our water, crowding and damaging our roads, ruining our beautiful landscapes, threatening our agriculture and tourism caused by industrialized gas extraction.
Can our local government step in and fill the gap? Yes! It is quite clear, (Black Letter Law), that a Town Board has the ability to prohibit land use it does not feel is compatible with the wishes, safety, and economic well-being of its constituents.
Many communities across the state have now banned gas drilling. We propose that the Town Board of Vestal, New York enact a total ban on industrialized natural gas extraction (hydrofracking).
Please sign if you are a Town of Vestal Resident and over 18 years old!
9. Stop Fracking the Blackfeet
(**IMPORTANT NOTE** This petition is for NON-Blackfeet people who wish to support tribal members opposed to fracking within the Blackfeet Nation. IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF THE BLACKFEET TRIBE, GO HERE.)
We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with members of Blackfeet Nation who are opposed to hydro-fracturing on the Blackfeet Reservation until a referendum is held. We are testifying that we hold in common the following two positions:
10. Stop Fracking our Homeland
(**IMPORTANT NOTE** This petition is for MEMBERS of the Blackfeet tribe. Please be 18 or older and enrolled if you sign here. If you are NOT a Blackfeet tribal member, but would like to support our efforts to ban fracking on the reservation, please go to the petition for non-members.)
We the undersigned members of Blackfeet Nation are testifying that we hold in common the following four positions, which implicate the addressees in what we consider to be reckless activities:
11. Ban gas drilling in Hector, NY
Slick water, high volume, hydraulic fracturing has destroyed people's homes, communities, natural resources, air, and water in more than a dozen states, most recently in Pennsylvania. This is done so that corporations can sell gas world-wide, in the name of "freeing us from petroleum imports."
We believe our town should ban this practise, in the name of preserving our community. Our state protection agency, the DEC, has decided that certain parts of our state are not OK to drill in, but it's "OK" for the rest of us. "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."
We need Hector residents and landowners to sign our petition.
12. Northern Ireland, No Fracking Required Here
Fracking (Hydraulic Fracturing of rock) is a method used to extract natural gas from the ground. The process involves pumping millions of gallons of water, mixed with toxic chemicals, thousands of feet deep into the ground.
It has been used in the USA and Australia and has caused widespread environmental damage, water pollution, including death to livestock and wildlife.
Serious health issues for people living in the area are also reported. Because of this damming body of evidence, which includes academic reports, moratoria on fracking have been put in place in the state of New York, New Jersey(USA), the North Rhine (Germany), South Africa and France.
A large area of N. Ireland will be affected by this and licenses have been issued for Central Larne-Lough Neagh Basin, Lough Allen Basin, Rathlin Basin and Rathlin Island. See link. http://www.detini.gov.uk/deti-energy-index/minerals-and-petroleum/petroleum_licensing_2.htm
The people of Northen Ireland need a full review of this decision and a ban on this process. This process could severely impact our tourism industry, agriculture, our water quality, environment and our health.

13. Ban high-volume slickwater hydrofracking in Town of Groton
Neither the federal Environmental Protection Agency, nor the New York Department of Environmental Conservation has stepped forward to protect the people from the plundering of our resources, poisoning our water, crowding and damaging our roads, ruining our beautiful landscapes, and threatening our agriculture and tourism caused by industrialized gas extraction.
Can our local government step in and fill the gap? We propose that the Town Board of Groton, New York enact a total ban on the technique known as high-volume slick water, hydraulic fracturing for gas extraction.
14. Ban Hydraulic Fracturing for natural gas in Ireland
We are calling on the Irish Government to immediately ban the process known as Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking) in Ireland.
Hydraulic fracturing is the method used for the extraction of natural gas (shale gas) from the ground.
This horizontal drilling process involves the pumping of millions of gallons of water, mixed with hundreds of highly toxic chemicals, thousands of feet deep into the ground.
Already in the U.S.A and Australia, pollution caused by this process to land, to air, to surface water and to groundwater has resulted in a terrible health toll and catastrophic environmental damage. Countless cases of death have been reported among wildlife and livestock.
A litany of serious ‘fracking’ related health problems for people in communities in areas where this technology has been used have also come to light.
Because of this damning body of evidence, which includes academic reports (1), moratoria on ‘fracking’ have been put in place in the state of New York, in the state of New Jersey, in the North Rhine Westphalia (Germany), in South Africa. The French Government has recently banned hydraulic fracturing in France.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has only recently begun an investigation into the safety of the process. Their final report is not expected until 2014. At present in Ireland there is no regulation in existence that covers this extraction method, and there has been no research published into the potential consequences of such activity here.
Presently, a number of oil and gas companies who have already been granted exploratory licences, are preparing to use this process to profit from shale gas in the Lough Allen and Clare Basin Regions – an area which includes twelve counties (2).
If hydraulic fracturing is allowed the aftermath may be an irreversible disaster for us and our environment. It may result in the contamination of our water table and of Ireland’s most extensive and important river and lake network.
We will not allow the safety of our water and the health of our children to be put at risk.

15. Baldwin Hills Community Standards District Director Review
Over two years have passed since the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors certified an EIR and adopted the Baldwin Hills Community Standards District (a codification of existing regulations with the addition of new) that most residents deemed inadequate to addressing community concerns regarding the operation of the Inglewood Oil Field.
On August 4, 2009 the Board adopted Supervisor Ridley-Thomas' motion calling for a study by the Planning Director to consider strengthening amendments to the CSD. The motion called for “enhancement or modifications of the regulations for the benefit of the community related to aesthetics, the intensity of drilling at the site and health impacts”.
It laid out several areas for reforms, including the possibility of “revising the number of new wells allowed per year and over all, establishing an end date for drilling, and ensuring the adequacy of the required health studies.”
The Planning Director was instructed per the motion to convene a public hearing before the Regional Planning Commission to consider possible amendments. In turn – the commission was to make a recommendation to the Board regarding possible amendments or modifications to the CSD. This has not occurred.
