1. The Guatemalan Experiment 1946-1948 / El Experimento de Guatemala 1946-1948

We would like to ask for the support and solidarity of fellow Guatemalans as well as the international community in condemning a crime against humanity committed in Guatemala this past century. We will not let this pass without further scrutiny.

Recently discovered documents at the University of Pittsburgh uncovered a medical experiment that took place in Guatemala between the years 1946 to 1948. The experiment was carried out by the United States Public Health Service during which nearly 1500 Guatemalan prisoners, soldiers, and mental health patients were deliberately infected with syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases without their consent. Some received treatment although it is not clear whether it was the adequate amount while others received nothing. The objective of the study seems to have been to identify the effect that penicillin had in the prevention and treatment of these diseases.

What is ironic about this experiment is that it was taking place at the very same time as the Nuremburg trials in which Nazi doctors were tried and convicted in U.S. military courts for having carried out human experiments without their subject's consent in Nazi concentration camps.

On October 1st, 2010 the United States Secretary of State and United States Health Secretary issued a simple one paragraph apology to the people of Guatemala for the research that was carried out by American doctors under the pretext of public health more than 65 years ago. We deserve more than this.

We are here today to say that an apology is not enough. The physical and psychological pain endured by the people affected and their families merits at the very least a trial at an international court of justice where the persons and public bodies responsible should be tried and convicted of these atrocious crimes against humanity.

This is another example of a wealthy nation abusing its power, acting irresponsibly, and committing crimes that would not be tolerated inside its own borders. Now they are trying to avoid the consequences that their acts merit.

Thank you

Gracias

3. Guatemala 900 Mother's Day Plea

This Mother’s Day will be, at minimum, the third to pass for many families still awaiting the homecoming of their adopted children.

January 1, 2008 marked the dissolution of the former Guatemalan notarial adoption system. This action, along with the ratification of the Hague Adoption Convention and initiation of a new adoption law, was strongly endorsed by the U.S. Department of State and UNICEF. In good faith, American families continued to initiate new adoptions through December 31, 2007, guaranteed the protections and practices of the former notarial system under Article 56 of the Ortega Law (Articulo 56 of the Ley de Adopciones (Decreto 77-2007).

Article 56. "Adoptions in process. All the notarial and judicial processes of adoption that are still being processed at the moment when the present law becomes effective, must be registered at the Central Authority, in a term no longer than thirty days, for the effects of the registration of the case, these will continue its process in conformity with the law in effect at the time of its initiation. The cases that are not registration within the term stated will be resolved according to the procedures stated in this law”.

Today, hundreds of Guatemalan children continue to languish in institutions awaited by U.S. families while their “grandfathered” adoptions tarry in political gridlock. The rights ensured in Article 56 have been violated as these cases are scrutinized without transparency outside the practices and protections of the law. Months to years have been added to wait times as families are required to jump through bureaucratic hoops, meet deadlines (some undisclosed), endure mutiple birth mother interviews, and undergo investigations by outside authorities; all beyond the required grandfathered procedures and protections.

As awaiting families, our concerns turn to panic as attempts increase to illegally delay and terminate in-process adoptions. Since the law changed over two years ago, authorities have waged a war on adoption in which families and children have become collateral damage. When we entered into these adoptions as a humanistic endeavor to love and embrace these children as our own, we were unprepared for the violations that lay ahead: illegal raids on children's homes, wrongful seizure of children with their whereabouts undisclosed to their adoptive families, prevention of visitation rights for adoptive families, harassment and bribery of birth mothers, violations of Guatemalan women’s rights to privacy and to choose an adoption plan for their children, and enforced placement of children with extended birth family members who are unwilling and/or unable to care for them are just some of the injustices we have witnessed and endured. Today, the forward motion of all in-process adoptions has virtually ceased as a cycle of fear and retribution has taken hold. Immediate senior level government intervention is needed to end this cycle and allow righteous and fair procedures to prevail.

If these adoptions are allowed to come to their completion, they certainly will not have occurred in an expeditious manner as Article 35 of the Hague Adoption Convention urges. The cornerstone of the convention is the cooperation between states (Article 7). We need the U.S. and Guatemalan governments to work together to determine an immediate and expeditious path to process our adoptions.

The efforts to serve and protect the innocent are failing them as they lose their childhood one day, month, and now, year at a time. Long-term emotional and physical consequences are inevitable as these children languish in under funded institutions and foster care. It grows increasingly difficult for children to be placed successfully within loving families as their spirit and salvation wither outside permanent parenting. Developmental delays, psychological damage, and severe struggles to bond are just some of the many challenges families must prepare for. With every day that passes, innocence wanes for the children who have stopped believing anyone wants them. As families fight desperately to adopt these children they endure sleepless nights and anxiety filled days not knowing if they will ever be able to bring them home. With financial hardship and constant worry resulting in hopelessness, we ask, “Who will finally put an end to this needless suffering and unite our families?”

The dissolution of the former adoption system, along with allegations of fraud in specific cases, has lead to a standstill that is violating children’s rights to a family and families’ rights to a fair and legal adoption.

All those associated with Guatemala 900 believe strongly in the sanctity of family. We value and celebrate legitimate, legal adoption practice and abhor any type of unethical action that may deny a birth family of their basic human rights. We advocate for adoption reform and applaud the Guatemalan government’s efforts to end corruption and prevent the abuse of children and birth families.

We must work together to uphold the law and ensure that the actions of corrupt individuals in specific cases does not lead to additional bureaucratic delay for the families and children who are innocent. We must prevent further harm to hundreds of awaiting families and thousands of orphaned and abandoned children whose cases are legitimate and legal.

4. Stop the use of Chemical Pesticides on Banana crops

Chemical pesticides have been used on banana crops for over half a century. The wide spread use of these pesticides in South American countries has produced numerous accounts of physical illness on the people who work on banana plantations as well as the people of the surrounding villages and towns.

The corporations who use these pesticides on a regular basis are ignoring many of these illness issues. The illnesses that are inflicted on the workers and their families cause undue financial and physical harm, and do not allow them to keep their jobs, which are essential to providing for their families.

6. Freedom for All Cuban Political Prisoners

We would like to bring to your attention the state of human rights in Cuba. On March 18, 2003, a crackdown occurred where many peaceful human rights activists—like Oscar Elias Biscet—were arrested. Many remain imprisoned today.

Following the death of Orlando Zapata Tamayo, an imprisoned Cuban and human rights advocate who was on hunger strike from December 3, 2009-February 24, 2010 demanding his most basic human rights, many have assumed a hunger strike requesting the same basic human rights for political prisoners as Orlando Zapata Tamayo. Some activists, like Guillermo Fariñas and Felix Bonne Carcasses, have even expressed their willingness to die for the cause of freedom and human rights, as did Orlando Zapata Tamayo.

We strongly urge you to demand the release of all individuals who have been arrested and convicted on the basis of their peaceful political activities and their efforts to promote and protect basic human rights in Cuba. In addition, we urge you to demand the prompt medical care of all political prisoners who are suffering from serious medical conditions.

While all Cuban human rights defenders remain in detention, we urge you to ensure that they no longer be subjected to further torture and abuse. According to the international human rights law, all persons held in detention must be treated with humanity and dignity and that they must not be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and the UN Body of Principles for the Protection of all Persons Under Any Form of Detention or Imprisonment). According to the 1998 UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, which Cuba actively participated in drafting and passing, all persons have the right to effective access to participation in the government of their country and in the conduct of public affairs. The Declaration also provides that everyone has the right "freely to publish, impart or disseminate to others views, information and knowledge on all human rights and fundamental freedoms."

We call on the Cuban government to recognize the important work of Cuban human rights defenders, cease the persecution of these valiant men and women, and liberate those detained.

8. WATER FOR SUGAR: Support Corporate Social Responsibility, Pure Water, and Public Health!

Do you want to support social responsibility for sugar cane workers in Nicaragua? If you have a sweet-tooth, and want to show your support for poor Nicaraguan campesinos who labor in extreme heat to produce sugar and other sugar cane based products for local and international consumption, then support this petition!!!

People living and working in western Nicaragua, Guanacastal Sur sectors of La Isla, el Triunfo, Sector Gonzalez, Paises Bajos, and Santana do not have access to pure drinking water. Many suffer and die from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and other illnesses that may be related to consumption of contaminated water. Those who suffer most are the sugar cane field workers who urgently need potable water to maintain healthy levels of hydration while working in extreme heat.

La Isla Foundation and Fundación Isla are seeking partners to support our integrated programs including Corporate Social Responsibility, Pure Water, and Public Health. With support from our partners we will construct a pure water system to fill a 15,000 gallon reservoir, connected to a gravity-fed distribution system leading to each home. We will also implement community empowerment, public health, environmental, and educational programs. To implement these programs we seek support from many sources!

-------------------------------------------------

I wish to express my deep preoccupation in regards to the law project 17383 “Rectificación de Límites del Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas y creación del Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Las Baulas de Propiedad Mixta”.

If approved, this law would cause a great damage on leatherback turtle populations which reproduce there. It would reduce the already insufficient protected surrounding area, on top of dismantling Costa Rica's national park system.

10. Do Not allow Late Releases/Remixes for 2010 HAITI CARNIVAL

As some of you might recalled the 2009 carnival was held on February 22-24, 2009 in Haiti, and it was probably by far one of the worse carnival moments in decades due to the fact that many of the bands were waiting to the last moment to release/remix their carnival tracks.

If one can goes a few years back during the 90’s through 00’s era majority of the population (especially the kids) used to at least remember a partial of the carnival song and also enjoyed what they were listening.

Now this day is another story, people do not even have time to enjoy the song before the big 3 days because of the late release and multiple remix.

11. We have a dream: Cuba Libre

I understand the pain of the Cubans in exile. But, it is time to turn the tide because 50 years is enough! Even though we have technology that connects us with a click we are separated. The failed government of Cuba thinks it is still fooling the world but reality exposes that communism can not function for society. The thinking of the passing generation worked in the 1960s to trick the population but it won't work now.

This petition is one of many baby steps because I believe we need to get our foot in the door. All this talking about the concert in Cuba and all the different opinions is just the recipe I have been praying for. What we should do is ask God to break down the invisible wall of darkness that separates millions of families for 50 years!

Break the chains that are rooted in pride. We must put pride aside. The beautiful Cuban people have suffered enough. Lets get over to Cuba to restore, rebuild, and love. This action of love and mercy will bless millions and extend to healing the nation of the United States and the world. For Truth sets the captive free! The power of love is the greatest, it rides on a vessel of faith because of the One who made us.

I have envisioned the day will come. Like a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly, so is the freedom of Cuba. Lets light a candle of love with our heart and prayers. These things equal peace which is what we all want therefore the power of choice is in our hands so please sign this petition and join me in agreement for a free nation of Cuba.

I want to add to my petition the information from my trip to Cuba after 50 years. Cuba was in the 50s the 3rd most advanced Latin American country and now it is a third world country, this I witnessed with my own eyes. It is urgent that we labor for their freedom before we are all silenced.
Thank-you.

12. Support the Haitian Children & Families Initiative

UNICEF estimates that 490,000 children are orphans in Haiti. This translates to 6% of Haiti's total population.

In 2004, at the height of intercountry adoptions into the U.S., over 350 children were served through intercountry adoption. Thousands more including local Haitian communities were served by family preservation and other permanency services.

However, over the past three years the processing of adoptions in Haiti has slowed to a crawl. Abandoned children now endure 2 or more years of debilitating effects on their health, development and emotional well-being while awaiting the completion of their adoption.

The delays imposed over the past three years are largely the result of the Haitian government's implementation of an inadequate child welfare and protection law. This law provides insufficient child protections and does not reflect the realities of current Haitian society. While enforcement of current laws are generally seen a positive, this particular law is significantly dated and does not serve the best interest of children in need of a permanent family.

The obvious solution to the crisis is the passage and implementation of a new adoption and child protection law. Such a law has been drafted, introduced into the Haitian National Assembly and supported by the Joint Council on International Children's Services, the U.S. government, the French government and UNICEF.

13. Support Mexican Rights

Everyone deserves a chance at a better life. Who are we to stand in the way of a better future for a good person? Are we insisting that we are better people because we were born in the land of the free and home of the brave? Are we still as Americans, stuck on the colors of our skin to define us a person?I disagree, I believe those who deserve a chance, should be able to have one. Help me stand up for the innocent for the Mexican families that are in United States without a voice. To help stop the fear of deportation , being taken away from children, husbands and wifes.

Let's help the Mexicans that are willing to help the United States by paying taxes, joining United States troops, fighting for our country. Putting money back into our country by being able to buy housing, cars and other products instead of being separated from there family and sending there money back to Mexico, building there country while lowering ours.

Let's help them help us. Lets come together and compromise because as one we stand alone, but together we stand united.

26. Free the Cuban Five!

A STORY OF BRAVERY AND LOVE OF COUNTRY

Cuba has faced the wrath of US aggression since the victory of the Cuban revolution in 1959. The numerous sabotage and attacks by terrorist groups based in Florida which act with total impunity have left 3,478 dead, 2,099 wounded. and direct damage to the economic and social objectives of Cuba amounting to 54 billion dollars. The damage to the economy of Cuba caused by the US economic blockade on the other hand exceeds 86, 208 million dollars, or an annual average of 1,832 million dollars.

Among these terrorists is the internationally known Luis Posada Carriles believed to be behind the blowing up of the civilian plane Cubana de Aviacion on October 6, 1976 which killed 73 persons and other heinous crimes including attempts to assassinate President Fidel Castro. His accomplice, Orlando Bosch, a confessed terrorist, walks freely on the streets of Miami thanks to the presidential pardon of Bush Senior.

Five Cuban heroes responded to the call to defend their country against these terrorist attacks. Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez, Ramón Labañino Salazar, Fernando González Llort and René González Sehwerert monitored the anti-Cuban groups in Florida and kept Cuba informed of their terrorist plans.

In 1998, the Cuban government warned the US government of terrorist actions being organized in Florida against Cuba. It also demanded their collaboration to stop these terrorist acts. This was supported by a voluminous dossier which Cuba delivered to the FBI in June 1998.

Instead of acting on the concrete evidence presented the US government arrested the 5 Cubans on September 12, 1998. The 5 Cubans were monitoring the anti-terrorist attacks on Cuba and reporting to the Cuban government. The arrest and conduct of legal process ignored the basic principles of justice in violation of the United States’ own laws and international law. They were kept for 17 months in solitary confinement before trial; denied of change of venue despite existing prejudice against the five in the community and hostile local press; denial of their lawyers’ right to use the ‘defense of necessity’ that justified the presence of the five in the United States territory; finding of guilt of conspiracy to commit espionage without a shred of proof and despite contrary testimony offered by US generals and finding of guilt against Gerardo for conspiracy to commit murder even though the prosecutor admitted in writing he could not prove the charge.

On August 9, 2005, the three-judge panel of the Federal Court of Appeals in Atlanta decided unanimously to revoke the sentences of the Five and order a new trial. The judges stated “empanelling an [impartial] jury in this community was an unreasonable probability because of pervasive community prejudice.”

However, exactly a year later on August 9, 2006, the Court of Appeals in Atlanta overturned the decision of the 3-judge panel, rejecting the finding that an environment of violence and intimidation pervaded in Miami. The court ratified the sentences, denied a new trial and ordered that the case be sent back to the panel to consider remaining issues.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had declared on May 27, 2005, the prison sentences of the Five illegal. Amnesty International expressed its concerns to the US government for “the serious questions which have been raised about the fairness of the convictions” of the Five. Also, more than 900 parliamentarians from all over the world have declared their support for the Five by way of motions and letters to the US government asking for their liberation.

Despite the overwhelming clamor worldwide for justice and their freedom, the five are still incarcerated in the United States, confined in prisons of maximum security, denied of their right to receive regular visits even from family members; their telephone contacts and correspondence limited and controlled.

Indeed the people of the world were shocked and outraged to know that on May 8, 2007, international terrorist Luis Posada Carriles has been released in the United States and all charges against him were dropped, while the five Cuban heroes continue to languish in US prisons and their rights grossly violated. This aptly shows the double standards of the US in its “war on terrorism”.

Let us continue to struggle for justice and freedom of the Five Cuban patriots!

30. FOXNEWS En Español

I am concerned with the leftist media in all the Spanish speaking news networks. As any community we are not all of the same mind and have different political opinions and many different interests.

We need this variety represented in our television networks. I am asking for Fox News to create a Spanish version of the Fox News 24 hour network. If you agree with me, please sign this petition.

Thank you for your support.
