31. STOP Elder Abuse

Among the most prominent problem faced by the elderly is the abuse by the family members and also by the people of the society. According to a rough estimate, nearly 40 % of older people living with their families are reportedly facing abuse of one kind or another, but only 1 in 6 cases actually comes to light (Helpage India website).

But first it is necessary to understand what comes elder abuse and its definitions. Various authors have defined elder abuse but a comprehensive definition is given by Council of Europe (1992).

They define elder abuse as “A non-accidental act or omission, which undermines the life, the physical and psychological integrity of an older person or harms the development of his or her personality and or undermines or damages his or her financial security”.

32. New Services at Kidderminster Hospital

It is vital that new services be introduced to Kidderminster Hospital.

I very much welcome the Urgent Care Centre, which should now be kept as a permanent facility. A Palliative Care Suite for the terminally ill is very much needed in Wyre Forest. At the moment our patients would go to Worcester or perhaps Evesham or Bromsgrove.

We need a local facility and Kidderminster Hospital is most likely to be able to provide such a service which would cost £500,000 a year. There is a real need in Wyre Forest to offer palliative care beds. Please sign the Petition for new services at Kidderminster Hospital.

33. Stop killing animals by rash driving

Morning: 8.00 am.
Victim:A calf barely two years dead in the road.
Place: Sembakkam
City: Chennai
State: Tamil nadu
Country: India

This is happening almost weekly, but the victims were usually dogs. But today the soft hearted drivers had gone a step further and hit a calf. WHOSE MISTAKE IS THIS? The calf, an animal with only five senses, that it does not know it should not go when a fast lorry is approaching and the driver is in hurry or the driver's who knew that had he wished he could have avoided a horrible end to such a soft creature.

Had it been a man, would he dare to hit and go like that. Simply because it is an animal and no one would question they take it for granted.

This situation must be changed. Society should change. We should learn to respect our fellow living beings. We should understand that we alone are not God's children. Even they are created by him.

Let's make it a petition, pressurize the law holders to make it a law that animal slaying in name of accidents should be seriously punished. The license of such rash drivers should be banned for lifelong.

Law is equal to one and all. If it cant protect the creatures which are totally depend on it, there is no point in its existence. Let law be given a meaning by enforcing severe actions to the murderers as above.

"Killing of animals in accidents should be equally treated as human murder". This should be enforced in law as the killers are NOT innocents and they take this for granted.

If law has any power as it says, let this situation change. Let it give justice to the wounded and victim irrespective of its species.

35. Workplace rights for Australian workers

It has been my experience that some employers in the disability sector can and do treat their staff any way they like, without having to answer to anyone or any supposed laws.

These employers need to be named and exposed.

36. PETITION FOR AN URGENT CARE CENTRE AT KIDDERMINSTER HOSPITAL

Update: GREAT NEWS ! From 1st October 2007, a six month Pilot Scheme will provide an URGENT CARE CENTRE at Kidderminster Hospital with Consultant supervision and a Doctor - led team with Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Support as an integral part of the Minor Injury Unit. The Minor Injury Unit is open 24 hours and the Doctors will be in the Urgent Care Centre Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm from October until March 2008.
Labour fully supports this excellent new service and it becoming permanent.

----------------------------------------

Labour Government is establishing Urgent Care Centres throughout the country - 25 in February 2007, in Liverpool, London, Edinburgh, Maidstone and elsewhere.
Urgent Care Centres are not A&E Departments, but build upon services provided at Minor Injuries Units and other Walk- in-Centres.

What advantage would an Urgent Care Centre provide for patients presenting to Kidderminster Hospital?

Firstly, there is a small percentage of current patients who have to be transferred to Worcester Royal – 2%. With a Doctor and other extra medical professionals on hand, that figure could be reduced.

Secondly, about 5,000 patients a year present at Worcester Royal A&E when many should be treated at Kidderminster Minor Injuries Unit.

Thirdly, Worcester Royal is extremely busy, and an Urgent Care Centre at Kidderminster would help relieve pressure and help patients living near Kidderminster.

Therefore, I fully support the establishment of an Urgent Care Centre at Kidderminster Hospital, (including the first step of a pilot scheme this autumn entailing a Doctor being based at Kidderminster’s Minor Injuries Unit)

I urge everyone to sign my petition below for an Urgent Care Centre to be placed at Kidderminster Hospital.

37. Support Eva and Morgan Hampton's Immigration Application

Eva Hampton meet Steve Fisher over the internet several years ago and a very close relationship began. In November of 2006, Eva and her 12 year old daughter came to England from the US to visit Steve.

Steve is a quadriplegic and his main carer passed away, so Eva and Morgan extended their stay in England to help Steve with his care needs. After several months, it was evident the relationship was one of love and that a family had been formed between these three so a decision to stay in England was made by them.

While researching which process was needed to apply for a visa to extend their stay .. it became evident that there really was no proper process for them to apply unless they wanted to marry (which they all felt was too soon - 6 months). An application form FLR(O) was filled out under the other catagory asking for an extension of stay for both Morgan and Eva so they might continue to care for Steve and spend some more time together as a family unit before deciding whether to marry or not.

I am asking for you to support the Visa Application of Eva and Morgan Hampton so that they can extend their stay in England with me. I am able to support them without them recieving funds from the government and they will continue to live in my home with me.

The need for the application to be approved without them returning to the US and applying there is because it would remove the care needs that Eva is currently giving me forcing me to hire a stranger to come into my home and care for me.

Thank you for your support.

38. City of Casey discounts property rates for Health Care Card holders

There are people living in the City of Casey that deserve a fair go. Those that are living in retirement homes and are on pensions and disability payments need as much assistance as they can get. They do not have the resourses most of us take for granted. It is a cold hearted council that does not consider these people need help in many forms.

Health Care Card holders are offered discounts or consessions for the motor vehicle registrations gas, electricity and water bills, why does the City of Casey not issue these benefits also. Does the council not have a heart?

It's time we showed our support for those less fortunate than ourselves and request that the City of Casey do its bit in this area.

39. Stop the Cruelty: Stop Iams!

Iams and its manufacturers conduct cruel and unnecessary laboratory tests on animals, including locking animals in cages and deliberately forcing healthy animals to eat contaminated and potentially lethal food.

They've also done such things as cutting chunks of muscle from dogs' thighs, hanging mice by their hind legs in crude muscle-atrophy experiments, and inducing gingivitis in beagles by cutting and stitching their gums. These tests are cruel and unnecessary and are not required by any law.

It is time for Iams to join the 21st century and abandon all laboratory testing on animals. In addition, Iams' shameful purchase of animals from breeders in order to confine them to cages for a minimum of six years - when the company could rely on humane feeding tests conducted in homes and in veterinary offices using animals volunteered by their guardians - must be ended.

41. Yale providers against Ryan White cuts

The White House has sent memos to key service agencies, including those funding Ryan White Care Act programs, indicating dramatic cuts to 2006 budget appropriations (see, e.g.: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58762-2004May26.html ).

The Yale AIDS Network is asking Yale providers to sign the following letter, indicating opposition to cuts in the Ryan White Care Act, which will be sent to Connecticut legislators in Washington D.C. on July 4, 2004.

--

Dear Connecticut Legislator:

As people working directly with those living with HIV/AIDS in Connecticut, we are writing to tell you of the importance of programs that are funded by the Ryan White Care Act.

Each day, patients come to our offices in need of help with housing, medical bills, medication access problems, mental health issues, and food and nutritional needs. Without the RWCA, these people would have little or no resources to survive. Each dollar of the RWCA makes an important impact on the lives of those with HIV/AIDS here in Connecticut.

We are concerned by recent news stories indicating that White House memos have already instructed RWCA administrators to expect drastic cuts in next year's budget (Weisman, J. 2006 Cuts In Domestic Spending On Table. The Washington Post, 27 May 2004, Page A1). This would produce a devastating reduction in services for those with HIV/AIDS, directly resulting in immense suffering and mortality among our patients. A cut in RWCA funds would work to reverse so much of the progress we have made in reducing death tolls from HIV in our state.
