31. Publish signs of childhood eye cancer (retinoblastoma)

PLEASE SIGN BELOW BEFORE SHARING WITH YOUR FRIENDS OR YOUR SUPPORT WILL NOT REGISTER!!

Retinoblastoma is a life-threatening eye cancer which develops in children from birth to around six years. The condition is often diagnosed late when the tumour/s have had time to grow extensively within the eye.

In the UK it is treatable but, often, more aggressive treatments are needed - in many cases the treatment used for these large tumours is to remove the whole eye (enucleation) sometimes with follow-up chemotherapy.

Children go on to endure invasive check-ups, initially under general anaesthetic, throughout childhood. Many children face the challenges of living with an artificial eye. The result of late diagnosis for many children is loss or partial loss of vision.

An early diagnosis would lead to a greater choice of treatment options for many children and more aggressive treatments may not be necessary.

The signs of retinoblastoma can be spotted by a parent. If a parent was aware of the significance of these signs they could seek medical help sooner, reducing the chance of the child losing an eye and therefore saving some sight.

There is currently no information provided by the Department of Health for parents in the Birth to Five book or website or on NHS Direct online which alerts parents that there may be a serious problem with their child’s eyes.

Since our campaign started however, every newly-printed Personal Child Health Record (known as the red book), will now warn parents to take action if they see one of the signs of retinoblastoma and the NHS Choices website has also now included information on the condition. With your support we can make sure NHS Direct and Birth to Five also publish this vital information.

There are a number of signs of retinoblastoma - amongst these are;
A white/yellow/orange reflex in the pupil/s, which may be noticed in artificial light or in flash photography.
A squint
A change to the colour of the iris in one eye.
A red and swollen eye with or without the presence of infection
An absence of ‘red eye’ in one eye in a photo.
Deterioration in vision.

Unlike other serious childhood illnesses, there may be no other obvious symptoms that the child has cancer. Only awareness of the signs will prompt the parent to seek help.

It is possible for a GP to do a simple, non invasive, 'red reflex' test to identify abnormalities in the retina and make a referral if found. Equally a red reflex test can be used to rule out serious illness if no abnormality is present and concerned parents can be reassured.

We propose simple changes to Department of Health information for parents, which would also alert the parent to other serious eye conditions such as nystagmus, cataract and Coat’s disease as well as retinoblastoma (childhood eye cancer) and give them the confidence to approach their GP with their concerns.

In a survey conducted by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust in May 2011 with 1,001 parents of children under 6 years old, over 70% said they would like more information to be available. Now we need your support to help make this happen.

Department of Health publications are highly valued by parents and, of those surveyed, 75% of parents said they would look for information about serious eye conditions in the documents/sites mentioned above.

32. Objection to 35 metre high mobile phone base station

A Telecommunication company is proposing to build a 35 metre hight monople antenna directly in front of high density residential area.

In their proposal, they claim that this type of antenna is best suited to a non residential area. This base station is more powerful than the others situated around our suburb. Should this go ahead, our suburb will be surrounded by a cluster of mobile phone station bases.

We are concerned about the long term effects of EMEs, and that these will add more EMEs that are already being emitted from other sources in our area.

34. Stop BC Hydro's Smart Meters

Dr. Olle Johansson, testifying by teleconference from Sweden, told the Canada’s Parliamentary Standing Committee in April 2010 that Canada’s Safety Code 6 is “completely out of date and obsolete” in terms of protecting people from “prolonged low-intensity exposures” to microwave radiation from cellphones, cell towers and masts, Wi-Fi, and smart meters.

The safety level in Safety Code 6 is some 6,000 times less stringent than the safety level advocated in The BioInitiative Report, which was released in 2007 by the University of Albany and includes about 2,000 expert international research studies (such as those done by Dr. Johansson) on electromagnetic radiation (EMR), electromagnetic fields (EMFs), and brain tumours, leukemia, and other illnesses.

The co-editor of The BioInitiative Report recently told Harper’s (May 2010), “If EMFs function both as a carcinogen and a neurotoxin, then it’s not just brain tumours and brain cancers” that could result; “it’s also testicular cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and a range of cognitive and behavioural problems.”

UK's Dr. Goldsworthy told the Parliamentary Committee that microwave radiation disrupts bird migration and “probably causes colony collapse disorder in bees.” Recent research from Europe has shown that bees exposed to EMR from cell towers made 21% less honeycomb and more than one-third of bees, taken a half-mile from the hive, couldn’t navigate back home.

Several European governments are already moving to prohibit Wi-Fi in government buildings and on campuses, and the Austrian Medical Association is lobbying for a ban of all Wi-Fi systems in schools, citing the danger to children’s thinner skulls and developing nervous systems.”

35. Abolish Parking Charges at The Beatson

The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre offers treatment and care to 60% of Scotland's population. During a difficult time, the staff at The Beatson provide excellent support to patients.

However, parking enforcers are hounding those unfamiliar with the area and its parking, adding additional stress to those already dealing with a very emotional and difficult time. These fines are completely unfair and plain money grabbing.

Chief Executive Tom Divers claims lack of managed parking regimes and commuters taking advantage of free hospital parking have led to the introduction of parking charges. Surely this is the lazy and unintelligent option?

This petition hopes to make NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde rethink the parking charges at The Beatson, so patients can at least have their treatment without the worry of a fine when they leave the building.

36. Decide the Use of Fluoride in the City of Red Deer via Plebiscite during the 2013 Election

The fluoridation of water in the City of Red Deer should be decided via plebiscite during the 2013 election to let the citizens decide the issue in a democratic process and in the process, do so at least cost.

Currently, there is another petition (Removal of Fluoride from the municipality of Red Deer) with the petition statement: “We, the Citizens, call on to the City of Red Deer to stop adding Fluoride to our municipal water supply”. That petition is available at:
http://www.gopetition.com/petition/44571.html

This petition is for the people to speak directly about fluoridation of water.

Speaking with a couple of the current City Councilors about the topic, fluoridation in municipal water is a divisive issue and a reasonable approach to such an issue is to have it decided directly by the people – not by special interest groups, not by special interest Councilors, not by corporations or by persons with vested interests.

Municipal water has undergone a fluoridation process for many, many years and taking time to better understand the process and the concerns. It is not a detrimental do or die situation. We can, at low cost, decide the issue via plebiscite during the 2013 Municipal Election.

In the meantime, speak with your Dentist, Doctor, Hygienist, call the University of Alberta Dental School, and research the topic via the Internet to be prepared with your YES/NO response come 2013.

37. Ban On-Campus Smoking

Smoking causes many life threatening illnesses such as lung cancer and heart disease. Also, for every two hours you spend in a smoke-filled environment, you are inhaling the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes in secondhand smoke.

Furthermore, when non-smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke it is called involuntary smoking or passive smoking. Non-smokers who breathe in secondhand smoke take in nicotine and other toxic chemicals just like smokers do. The more secondhand smoke you are exposed to, the higher the level of these harmful chemicals in your body.

Lastly, about 3,400 lung cancer deaths in non-smoking adults are caused by secondhand smoke. Smokers not only kill themsleves, but murder others who do not smoke too.

38. Removal of Fluoride from the municipality of Red Deer

People should have the right to choose whether or not to be exposed to fluoride. Unfortunately many of us were never given that choice. Today it is almost impossible to escape fluoride. It is in the fountain pop at the drive thru, at your local coffee shop, bottled and draft beer, you get the idea. At home we cook, shower and bath in it, its ridiculous!

Now the thing you might find interesting is where does the fluoride come from? The fluoride used in our drinking water is an industrial waste product from the aluminum and phosphate fertilizer industry. It is an unprocessed contaminated waste with a number of toxins, particularly arsenic. This type of fluoride has never Been Tested for safety and effectiveness. However it has been very effective as rat poison and cockroach powder.

So why do we put this in our water? The answer is simple, money. But not money for us, or our community, money for the corporations. By promoting it as a some kind of dental miracle they are able to eliminate their waste and make a profit at the same time. But does it benefit our teeth? New evidence suggests that fluoridation is either unnecessary or doesn't work. Cavities have declined at similarly impressive rates throughout the entire western, industrialized world over the past half century where there was no fluoridation.

"Water fluoridation is the single largest case of scientific fraud, promoted by the government, supported by taxpayer dollars, aided and abetted by the ADA and the AMA, in the history of the planet."

- David Kennedy, DDS President International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology

Some Harmful effects of fluoride include.

Diminished IQ'S, hypothyroidism, increase in hip fractures, increase in infertility, cancer, abnormal bone development, skeletal fluorosis, dental fluorosis.

Fluoride is not meant to be swallowed, if you look on your tooth paste it will advise you to contact poison control if accidentally swallowed. Why is it okay to drink it then? It is an accumulated poison, so while you may not see the effects right now, there is a good chance you may experience them later. The choice is clear, remove it from our water, and those who still want fluoridation are still free to do so.

Please research this topic for yourself and find your own truths. Do not take Authority as Truth, but rather Truth as the Authority!!

41. Cancer Information and Support Centre for Bolton

Feedback from a public meeting held in 2005 gave a clear indication of a locally unmet need around the provision of information and support for cancer patients and their carers and also for the wider general public on issues such as screening and cancer awareness.

In pursuit of this goal a Working Party comprising representatives from NHS Bolton - the Primary Care Trust, the Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, cancer patients and carers have been developing a business case for the proposed centre and have received the first Architect’s drawings of how the Centre might look. At the point at which the final meeting in the Feasibility Study being undertaken by Macmillan was due to have taken place, NHS Bolton withdrew their support of the project.

Whilst we remain hopeful of a successful bid to Macmillan for building costs and several years running costs, the project is dependent on assurances of having the running costs picked up once their pump-priming comes to an end, which is where NHS Bolton would come in; as Commissioners of our local Health Services and decision makers on how the budget for such is spent, it would fall to them to pick up these costs.

Cancer will indiscriminately touch the lives of 1 in 3 people; of the several thousand local people referred for suspected cancer last year alone, 1430 people received a cancer diagnosis at the Royal Bolton Hospital. Nothing can change the devastating impact of a cancer diagnosis but much can be done to support and empower patients and their families throughout the journey With the number of people being diagnosed on the increase, plus improvements in treatment and screening, there are a growing number of people who could potentially benefit from this facility, not to mention the advantages of such a resource to the wider general public.

Over 300 people visited Macmillan Cancer Support’s Mobile Unit during its last two visits to the town; the need is out there.

43. More Regulations for the Use of formaldehyde in textile products

Formaldehyde is a toxic carcinogenic poison, and it is found in many textile products in the Australian market place. Even in "all natural" cotton products.

There needs to be some sort of regulations on this toxic poison, manufacturers of products should be required to at least label their products as containing formaldehyde, particularly due to the fact that there are many people who are allergic to this chemical, as well as many cancer sufferers who unknowingly expose themselves to this carcinogen on a daily basis.

44. Raise awareness of Neuroblastoma by Government funded high profile national campaign

Neuroblastoma is a very aggressive form of childhood Cancer; after domestic accident, it is the second most frequent cause of mortality in children.

It is the single most common type of Cancer in infants and the 4th most common type of Cancer in children. However, few people have heard of it and most do not know the signs and symptoms.

This means that although symptoms may have been present in the child for some time, in over 75% of children the diagnosis is not made until the disease has reached stage 4, the final stage. Prognosis for this group is grim, offering around 5% chance of survival.

In contrast, children diagnosed in the early stages have up to a 95% chance of survival.

Treating a child who has stage 4 Neuroblastoma costs the NHS an average of £600,000 in the first year alone. Around 75 children per year will be diagnosed at stage 4. Several of those families will opt for treatment abroad, meaning an average of £300,000 of UK fundraised money, per child, will go overseas.

Most children will still not survive – largely because their symptoms were diagnosed too late.

Article in the Newcastle herald Monday Feb 7th 2011 .. reads that the hunter region is experiencing a crisis in cancer treatment services and that 30 people with just 2 types of cancers died last year in the hunter alone before even being able to see a cancer specialist.

Waiting times to see specialist and start chemotherapy are so extreme that two men responsible for the regions cancer service have gone public. The region only has about 55% of what is needed to cater to people with these needs. further more the hunter hasn't met the 2 week waiting time benchmarks for over 10 years n it has increased to waiting over 7 weeks last year alone and people are loosing their lives before being able to get treatments.

46. Support Grants for the Removal of Asbestos

There is a very good chance that asbestos is present in homes built between the 1950s and the early 1980s. It may also be found in homes built before or after these dates. If it is in poor condition, gets damaged or releases fibres in any way, you and other residents are at risk. If you carry out DIY on asbestos products, you are putting yourself in danger.

Many have already lost their lives or suffering from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. We can't undo the damage already done, but many are risking their lives by removing and disposing of asbestos to escape the high fees to get a qualified asbestos removal company.

It is a proven fact that mesothelioma is caused by asbestos and i propose the government offer grants for removal and safe disposal of it. It was the government that allowed the use of asbestos, it is there responsibility to dispose of this

It is a must to have a free or reduced rate disposal plan.

47. A Call To Enact Legislation Banning The Use Of Pesticides For Cosmetic (Non-Essential) Purposes In The Province Of Newfoundland And Labrador

The Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides- Newfoundland and Labrador hopes you will support a province wide ban on cosmetic pesticide use in Newfoundland and Labrador. New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and dozens of municipalities in Canada have banned lawn care pesticides but our provincial government still permits their sale and use. The government of Alberta has banned weed-and-feed because levels of this product in waterways are approaching dangerous levels.

- Known to cause childhood cancers, reproductive and neurological problems and fatalities in children, pesticides pose a risk to health that far outweighs the look of a nice lawn.

- You may be unaware that you are being exposed to a poison, particularly if you live in an urban area. Even if you do not use pesticides, your neighbour or landlord may be doing so.

- Cosmetic pesticides are unnecessary. There are many organic lawn care methods that are easy to implement and do not involve large amounts of chemicals entering the air and water.

49. International Petition to support Samsung workers & families

Over the past two decades, Samsung has become one of the most dominant electronics companies in the world, and is now a global leader in semiconductors, flat panel displays, mobile phones, and television production.

Sadly, this rapid rise to global dominance has come with serious consequences for the workers who produce the products – recent reports indicate that about 100 workers – mostly young women - have been stricken with cancer – mostly blood cancers - and at least 30 of them have died – making this the one of the largest known electronics cancer clusters in the world. (See http://tinyurl.com/2bl5c8a for more information).

Samsung has denied all responsibility for these illnesses and the Korean government has declined to declare the cancers “work related” and refuses to disclose results of its investigation of Samsung. In response, a strong support movement led by the victims and their families has emerged in Korea and around the world and is seeking justice for those who have suffered from occupational illness.

We the undersigned express our support for the workers and their families and call on the Korean government and Samsung to commit to the following principles in addressing this situation:

50. Stop cigarette smokers outside building on public footpaths

There are zero personal or societal benefits from smoking cigarettes.

22,000 Australians die each year from tobacco-related disease, which is over TEN times the amount of people killed in Australian road related incidences.

Smoking is banned now from most public places, except every time non smokers pass an office building in Melbourne city they have to avoid the disgusting mass of smokers who gather around the bins and seats squeezing in another ciggy like their life depended on it.

What their live's actually depend on is not having that cigarette all.

Every time a smoker gathers with their smoking buddies outside a public building, they are telling each other that it is OK to:

- inhale cancer creating substances into their lungs; and
- support the Government collecting $6.7 billion dollars in tobacco related taxes.

For non smokers it real is gross. For people stopping, it is another obstacle; and for addicts, it is one more place where they get feed back that it is ok to smoke.

Clearing footpaths of cigarette smoking is one more step to helping everyone.

51. Support Vital Funding for Cancer Drugs

A cancer sufferer – who is facing an anxious wait to see if she is eligible for a vital life-saving drug – has called for a change in the way health bosses allocate funding.

Mel Frisby has called into question contentious proposals by an NHS advisory group to offer incentives for people to quit smoking, or eat healthier food.

The controversial pilot scheme saw a pregnant women awarded supermarket vouchers for quitting smoking, and the obese paid to lose an agreed amount of weight.

But, the mother-of-two, who has already successfully battled breast cancer, and a brain tumour that spread to her liver and lungs, believes the proposals could take money from vital services.

The 38-year-old, who was told two weeks ago cancer had spread back into her brain, is now awaiting to see if she is eligible to receive lapatinib, an oral drug used for people suffering from tumours. Doctors have told Mrs Frisby the drug could help her condition, but have said the treatment could work out at £90 a day. She will find out in two weeks’ time if she has been accepted for the vital life-saving treatment.

“I’m just waiting for the decision now. It is a very anxious time,” Mel said.

“I have been told that it may cost £90 a day for a treatment over a couple of weeks. I know that is a lot, but if it means I have an extra three months or a year with my kids it is worth it. It seems to me that a lot of people are awaiting – or being denied – vital drugs because the NHS has not got enough money.

“I know I am going to get a backlash from this, but I don’t think people should be rewarded for losing weight or quitting smoking.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think they should be helped, but vital funding should not be put into stuff like this. It should be used to help people suffering from conditions outside their control.

“It is not cost effective to waste money on proposals when there are drugs that can help lengthen people’s life.

“I am a normal mother and if I get extra time with my kids because of this drug, it will be worth every bit of its cost.

“People should not be refused drugs on the ground of it being too expensive when the NHS are putting money into other schemes that reward people for making positive changes on their own lifestyle.”

52. We need a Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in Scotland

Cervical cancer is cancer of the cells lining the cervix which is the passage between the uterus and the vagina. Cervical cancer can occur at any age and is the second most common cancer in women under 35 in the UK.

The early stages of cervical cancer are not usually associated with any symptoms. In Scotland, there are about 300 new cases of cervical cancer each year. Around 100 women in Scotland die every year from cervical cancer.

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most common cause of this cancer. In most cases, HPV doesn’t cause any harm. Occasionally, it may start to damage cells and lead to cervical cancer.

Having damaged or abnormal cells isn’t the same as having cancer, but these cells can develop into cancer if they’re left untreated.

Regular cervical screening is the best way to detect abnormal cells early enough to do something about them.

All women in Scotland aged between 20 and 60 are invited for cervical screening every three years. Abnormal (damaged) cells show up in around one in 30 cases. Some of these may lead to cervical cancer if they aren’t treated.

The number of Scottish women who get cervical cancer is lower than it would be without cervical screening to spot pre-cancerous cells. The number of cases of cervical cancer in Scotland has almost halved since 1986.

54. Keep Mistletoe and other natural treatments on the NHS

Mistletoe has been used for many years in the support of the immune system for cancer patients. Many people benefit from its properties and it continues to be used today. It is primarily used in Germany in the fight against cancer. It is thought to help support the immune system and relieves the symptoms of chemotherapy.

Quote from Park Attwood clinic:

In Europe, mistletoe (Viscum Album) is the most commonly used complementary therapy in cancer care and is integrated into conventional cancer treatments.

Mistletoe therapy has been developed since 1917 and forms the backbone of medical care for cancer patients in anthroposophic medicine and at Park Attwood. In the UK this therapy is also available via the Homoeopathic Hospitals. There are several consultant-led clinics and hospitals in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and The Netherlands that specialise in this therapy

Mistletoe preparations are usually used in addition to conventional cancer therapies. They improve and strengthen the natural defenses of the body through their effect on the immune system. Improving our immune competence increases wellbeing in body and in spirit and helps us cope with the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Mistletoe therapy can help in dealing with symptoms like fatigue, nausea, digestive problems and weight loss, sleeplessness, low mood, recurring infections and pain. The majority of trials show improvement of quality of life and overall outcomes. Although mistletoe is widely used and there is a growing body of supportive evidence, the merits are not widely accepted and many doctors find the available evidence insufficiently robust.

A recent and thorough review concludes that there is consistent evidence of improvement of quality of life with mistletoe therapy, and reduction of side -effects of conventional treatment*. Further information and research is available on request from Park Attwood as well as on the website www.mistel-therapie.de (both German/English).

60. Petition to Senate regarding brain tumours

To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

The petition of the undersigned shows:

That each year in Australia approximately 1400 people are diagnosed with a primary malignant brain tumour and many others develop a so-called “benign” brain tumour, or metastases (secondaries) to the brain from another cancer elsewhere in the body.

That the diagnosis of a brain tumour can have a devastating effect on the individual and their caregivers because of the often poor prognosis and that brain tumours are the only cancer to affect both a person’s mental and physical capacities.

That brain tumour patients and their caregivers require special attention within the health system, bearing in mind that these tumours cannot be screened for or detected early, nor prevented by lifestyle changes, and can randomly affect the young and old, male or female.
