The average cost of birth control and safe sex methods in Canada for womyn over 21 is $25-50 a month. I believe that the cost of birth control is the reason that unplanned pregnancies have risen among womyn below the poverty line by 30% in the last 3 years. This is a ridiculously high number that allows the cycle of poverty to continue, and get more vicious.

Right now, there is a rise in Sexually Transmitted Infections. Between 1997 and 2004 Chlamydia rose by 70%, Gonorrhea by 80%, and Syphilis by 908% in Canada. This is likely due to the cost of condoms, and inaccessibility of free condoms in places such as bars.

More than 1,000 bears are killed every year in British Columbia because of bear-human conflicts. Almost all of these bears were attracted into neighbourhoods by improperly stored garbage and other attractants.

People who live in Coquitlam know about the killings of more than 4 bears last year, including a family of 2 cubs and one mother. More housing is required due to the added population of citizens, so unfortunately we have to support deforestation and kill habitats for bears, thus increasing the risk of them coming to the homes of others and harming people.

If we are more notified about these subjects, people will be less harmed and the bear population will not lessen.

Canada's commercial seal hunt is a hunt like no other. It is a cruel and unethical practice that produces a product nobody needs.

In fact, 98% of the animals killed in the past two years have been seal pups aged about 2 weeks to 3 months. This unmanageable hunt takes place over a vast area, making it impossible to carry out humanely.

But thanks to government subsidies and increased harp seal quotas over the past ten years, the seal hunt is back and worse than ever. The animal cruelty to seal pups as young as two weeks old, whether beaten or shot, is both unnecessary and wasteful. As we do every year, IFAW hunt monitors will gather the information we need to continue educating politicians and the public about the many scientific, economic and moral reasons to end the commercial seal hunt in Canada once and for all.

Every year, 300,000 baby harp seals are are brutally smashed to death, most of them under 12 days old.

Armed with clubs and hakapiks, sealers bludgeon, hack then skin pups while they are still conscious and able to feel pain, leaving them to die on the ice in pools of their own blood.

The current Rocky Point-Hammond Bay-Stephenson Point Neighbourhood Plan states that there is to be no gas pumps allowed on Hammond Bay Road. The Hammond Bay area is a family, and nature oriented area with parks, and trails, trees, and a great deal of wild life. This is why we choose to live here. This is why the neighbourhood plan was built.

The Rocky Point-Hammond Bay-Stephenson Point Neighbourhood Plan is part of the OCP (Official community Plan) of Nanaimo. The OCP goals speak to families, neighbourhood villages, protecting the environment etc.

The Gas pumps are adjacent to Whalley Creek. A ESA (Environmentally Sensitive Area), which is approx 100 feet away from the pumps. This is a protected Salmonoid stream (park land, and ESA). This is the last place we should be putting pumps in our community.

There are 4 other stations within 6 km, plenty to already take care of the communities needs. MORE IS NOT NEEDED.

Petition of the Federal Parliament to investigate Kenya’s illegal detention and rendition of the Canadian Citizen Mr. Bashir Makhtal to Ethiopia via the Ethiopian backed Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG).

Mr. Bashir Makhtal is a Canadian citizen who was detained by Kenyan officials while crossing the Kenya Somali border on December 31st, 2006. For more than two weeks he was interrogated by Kenyan officials without the presence of a lawyer or Canadian consular officials. According to newspaper reports Canadian consular officials were granted access to Mr. Makhtal on Monday January 15th, 2007. The Ogaden Somali Association of Ontario, OSCAO, wrote to both the Canadian high commission in Nairobi as well as the minister of foreign affairs honourable Peter Mackay on the 16th of January, 2007 complaining about the continued, illegal detention of Mr. Makhtal and the possibility of him being rendered to Ethiopia via the Ethiopian backed TFG.

Kenya, without informing Canadian consular officials, rendered Mr. Bashir Makhtal to Ethiopia via the TFG on Saturday January 21st, 2007 early in the morning. Up to the present time, no one knows about the safety and whereabouts of the rendered Canadian.

I am a young professional male living in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and would like to share a little of my frustration with you. Read on, this is sure to be of interest to you.

A dear relative of mine recently passed away from a rare form of Leukemia. This blood disease has caused a considerable upset to those I love. In fact, it took away one of those I loved. I am writing as I would like to bring awareness to the fact that we all must take action to a cause which is meaningful to us if we are to bring about radical change and positive outcomes for our society.

I have chosen to hone in specifically on a particular event which occurred recently during my effort to help and support those who are fighting for life.

Blood and blood alone is essential for survival and so important for those needing transfusions, platelets, and the like. I am no medical expert, but have first handedly witnessed the need and demand for supply of life’s principle fluid. I am also a universal donor.

I decided to go to Canadian Blood Services to sign up and donate. I wanted to take after my phenomenal father and become a donor for life. Simply put, I was completely appalled to find out that I could not donate because I was gay and “had anal sex with a male anytime after 1977”.

I let it go, and went on with my day, but I have grown frustrated over time, and after letting that particular situation settle in. This is 2007, and there are restrictions like this in place?? You’ve got to be kidding!

While, I admit anal sex between males is “high risk” activity, it is fundamentally immoral to exclude potential donors of this life saving liquid when anal sex occurs between females and males as well. Regardless, a persons sexual activity should not be a factor as to whether an individual is able to donate to the blood bank.

In addition, don’t we have the technology to screen and ensure 100% clean and virus free blood? Or is it simply a matter of us not putting enough effort into this method of screening instead of blatant discrimination?

I’m not going to rant and rave because it is essentially pointless. What is important is that we are aware of this, and that we work to change this transgression.

Si nous voulons vivre avec un étranger c'est bien souvent parce que nous avons vécu des expériences désastreuses avec des québécois et que nous ne voulons plus revivre la même chose, nous voulons seulement être heureux et c'est très souvent avec des gens de différente culture que nous trouvons l'équilibre et le bonheur, alors qu'on nous laisse vivre notre bonheur et qu'on nous laisse décider ce qui est bien et ce qui est mal pour nous.

Do you live in Ottawa? Are you jealous of how powerful Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal have become? If you are then sign this petition. My goal is to put Ottawa on the map, I mean we are the Nation's capital, or did we all forget?

When it comes to the music industry I don't know where to start artist's and rock bands just seem to skip us...why??? Maybe because unlike Toronto we've only got one arena the Scotia Bank Place while in Toronto you find numerous arena's and performing centres. If you were an artist what would convince you to perform in a city like ours? These "stars'' are looking for a city with an active night-life but the last time I checked we don't have a night-life. So just what makes these few artists want to come here besides coming for their fans?? Who knows...And aren't you frustrated to have to go shopping over at Toronto because they have cheap yet nice clothes and in Ottawa it's the same old plain stuff every year and every month?. Lately Donald Trump has been building a new Trump International Hotel and Tower in Toronto (Anticipated completion is 2008). The first in Canada but why shouldn't it be in the capital? Because Toronto is where everything's at! Not that it's a bad thing Toronto is an awesome place it's been nominated as being one of the most livable places in the world. But as for Ottawa I really don't understand how our city can be this..this..BORING!The only thing keeping us from giving the title of capitalism to Toronto is the Parliament we have here.

Just to make a comparaison Toronto has the Toronto Zoo ...why don't we have a zoo? Not that I have a particuliar liking for zoo's but simple things like having zoo's distinguishes one city from another. With all the gouvernement activities going on in this city, couldnt they spare us some time and make plans to make this city a cultural city I mean you'd think with all these cultures Ottawa would represent its constant growth of diversity and try to bring some life into this city. 5 years ago if you asked me : what is the capital of Canada? Ms. Moya Greene, Canada Post Corporation's most recent President and CEO made some statements at Vancouver Board of Trade meeting.

She spoke of spending billions of dollars to improve the infrastructure at Canada Post, but was silent on what, if any, services at Canada Post would be improved for customers.

Canada Post has been profitable for the last 11 years, posting a profit of $190 million last year and Ms. Greene expects revenue this year of $7.2 billion.

Ms. Greene does not expect to use any of the billions of dollars to expand door-to-door delivery to Saturdays. In fact, she claims that "customers are not asking for Saturday delivery".

As a customer of Canada Post I have never been asked if I wanted Saturday delivery.

Dear Mr. Baird and and Mr. Flaherty:

At a time when environmental protection has become one of the top priorities for Canadians, we, the undersigned, request that the Canadian government do all in its power to promote cycling as a climate-change solution.

In the summer of 2006, the Canadian government took steps to promote public transit as a climate change solution by offering a tax credit to public transit users.

At that time Mr. Flaherty said “Gridlock has become one of the most pressing issues across the GTA, eroding the quality of life and having a negative impact on business and productivity. Our government’s new transit tax credit will make transit more affordable, giving people even more incentive to park their keys and leave their cars at home.”

Then Environment Minister Rona Ambrose additionally said “The transit tax credit will not only save people money, but by taking public transit Canadians will be helping to improve our environment. The transit tax credit is part of our government's made in Canada environmental plan. Our transit tax initiative will take the equivalent of 56,000 cars off the road each year which will significantly reduce greenhouse gases here in Canada."

We agree with Mr. Flaherty and Ms. Ambrose that removing cars from the roads should be one of Canada’s top priorities. We feel this can be achieved by promoting cycling as a substitute to the automobile. We also feel that the government needs to promote cycling due to its health benefits.

Current estimates place the cost of physical inactivity in Canada at $5.3 billion ($1.6 billion in direct costs and $3.7 billion in indirect costs) and the cost of obesity in Canada at $4.3 billion ($1.6 billion of direct costs and $2.7 billion of indirect costs) in health care expenditures. This represents the totaleconomic cost as 2.6% and 2.2% respectively of the total health care costs in Canada. There is concern that chronic disease resulting from obesity may threaten or cripple the health care system in Canada.

As cycling would combat climate change by removing people from their cars, and ease the burden on the health care system by helping people maintain an active lifestyle, we ask the Canadian government to do everything in its power to promote cycling as a means of transportation.

Steps which we feel would achieve this include:
a) Offering a tax credit to bicycle commuters similar to that offered to public transit users. Cyclists would be required to have their employer verify that they commute to work by bicycle, and would then be given a credit based on the value of the C02 emissions they would have released into the atmosphere had they driven a car to work.
b) Creating a program similar to Britain’s “Cycle to Work” initiative. In this program the employer purchases a bike and related accessories for an employee who wishes to commute to work by bicycle. The employer then claims the taxes back from the government, and sells the bike to the employee at the tax-free price over an extended period of time with small deductions from the employee’s paycheque.
c) Offering tax incentives to employers which set up bike lockers and showers for employees who wish to cycle to work.
d) A removal of GST from bikes and bike accessories.

These steps and others can promote cycling as a transit alternative, but perhaps more importantly, the implementation of one or all of them would be a strong statement from the federal government - legitimizing cycling as a preferred means of transportation. Please make this statement, and help us make Canada part of the solution to climate change.

The Mackenzie Pipeline is a multibillion-dollar pipeline construction project which the federal government and gas companies have planned to transport the billions of cubic metres of oil and gas that have been found in Alaska’s Prudhoe Bay and in Canada’s Mackenzie Delta.

The reasons that this petition opposes the Mackenzie Pipeline are outlined below:

1) The pipeline, which is planned to be built 6 feet above ground, will ruin the migration patterns of elk and caribou meaning they will not be able to get to the right food at the right time causing their population to slowly decline.

2) Building it in the proposed location will destroy one of the worlds last great pristine wildernesses.

3) The Mackenzie Pipeline’s proposed use is to acquire natural gas for vast quantities of natural gas are required in the Alberta oil sands operations. The gas is burned to create steam which is then injected underground to loosen the oil therefore allowing it to be pumped to the surface. The oil sands presently burn around 600 million cubic feet of natural gas a day. In a decade, as oil production doubles, it could rise to 1.2 billion cubic feet, which is about the planned capacity of the Mackenzie pipeline. In other words, the clean gas delivered by the pipeline would be used to create a dirty fuel, oil, which is intended to be burned in cars and SUVs.

In Canada, the season for the commercial hunt of harp seal is from November 15 to May 15.[5] The majority of sealing, however, occurs in late March in The Gulf of St. Lawrence, and during the first or second week of April off Newfoundland, in an area known as "The Front". This peak spring period is generally what is referred to as the "Canadian Seal Hunt".[6]

In 2006, the St. Lawrence seal hunt officially started on March 25. This date was initially uncertain, due to thin ice conditions caused by the year's milder temperatures.

In 2003, the three-year harp seal quota granted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans was increased to a maximum of 975,000 animals, with a maximum of 350,000 animals in any two consecutive years.[5] In 2006, 325,000 harp seals, as well as 10,000 hooded seals and 10,400 grey seals will be killed. An additional 10,000 animals are allocated for hunting by Aboriginal peoples.

The Canadian seal hunt is monitored by the Canadian government and animal rights groups. However, although approximately 70% of Canadian seals killed are killed on "The Front",[6] the vast majority of private monitors focus on the St. Lawrence hunt, due to its more convenient location.[7]

By 2008, Annex 1 countries have to reduce their GHG emissions to around 5% below their 1990 levels (for many countries such as the EU members that corresponds to some 15% below their expected GHG emissions in 2008).

But, in Canada, we have recently gone out of the protocol, and by 2008, will result around the change of our emissions to be only .3 percent of the difference. What the hell.

As a mother of two, it just sickens me that there are sexual predators preying on our children.

WHEN and IF they are charged they get an insignificant punishment and let out in a couple of months….and only to attack another helpless child! There was an 11-year old girl abducted in Armstrong, BC not to long ago, thankfully she was found 36 hours later. The man that abducted her was in his fifties and well known to police. What kind of sentence is he going to get? If you ask me, he should be put in jail to rot! We need tougher laws so these pitiful creatures do not harm our children any more.

Check this out: a businessman and father, was convicted of obtaining the sexual services of minors on four occasions. The court imposed the lenient penalty of a six months suspended sentence, one-year probation and a $500 fine.
BUT
A man was convicted of hitting Alberta Premier Ralph Klein in the face with a pie. Provincial Court has sentenced him to 30 days in jail, three months probation, 40 hours of community service and a $50 victim surcharge.

Makes sense doesn't it?

PETITION POUR LA PROTECTION DU CLUB DE GOLF DE DORVAL

Cette pétition a pour but de dissuader les autorités de l'aéroport de Montréal (ADM) de convertir un magnifique écosystème qui s'est développé depuis plus de 25 ans, mieux connu sous le nom du club de golf de Dorval.

Les autorités de l'ADM veulent détruire un club de golf de 36 trous qui procure un habitat naturel aux oiseaux, particulièrement les oies du Canada, les hérons bleus, les hiboux, les canards, quelques familles de renards et autres animaux. Cette propriété est localisée au Québec, Canada, sur l'île de Montréal dans la ville de Dorval. Elle est un espace vert qui procure santé et bonne forme physique aux résidents de Montréal et les environs. Depuis des années, cette propriété s'est développée et elle est devenue un des plus beaux terrains de golf public au Québec. Les dirigeants du club de golf de Dorval ont développé au cours des ans un des plus importants programmes de Relève au Canada.

L'objectif de l'ADM est de s'accaparer cette propriété et de la convertir en un réel développement immobilier commercial dans un but monétaire. C'est un usage différent du but envisagé originalement. Cette propriété ne pourra pas être utilisée pour agrandir l'aéroport éventuellement si elle est construite. Les autorités de l'ADM se préparent à détruire l'écosystème, à sacrifier les espaces verts et par la même occasion à éliminer les bienfaits pour la santé et la bonne forme physique que procure cette propriété, le tout pour satisfaire un but monétaire.

Protégeons Dorval

Nous les résidents de Dorval, Montréal et les environs souhaitons exprimer notre désaccord envers l'objectif de l'ADM qui est de s'accaparer la propriété mieux connu sous le nom de club de golf de Dorval et de le convertir en une propriété à valeur locative dans le seul but de générer des revenus.

Nous contestons le fait qu'un écosystème qui s'est développé depuis plus de 25 ans soit détruit pour un but monétaire. La santé, la bonne forme physique et les souhaits des gens sont ignorées pour le seul bénéfice d'une entreprise commerciale à but lucratif.

PETITION FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE DORVAL GOLF COURSE.

The purpose of this petition is to try to conserve a beautiful ecosystem that has developed over a 25 year period on the property known as "Golf Dorval".

Located in Quebec, Canada, on the Island of Montreal in the city of Dorval, this property provides natural green space which promotes health and fitness for the residents of Montreal. Over the years, this property has developed and grown into one of the finest public golf facilities in Quebec. This 36 hole golf course has provided a natural habitat for birds, particularly the Canada Geese, blue herons, owls and ducks as well as a few families of foxes and other animals. It has a renowned Future Links program that has developed into the largest program of its kind in Canada.

The Airport of Montreal (ADM) wants to destroy this property and convert it into a commercial real estate development for the sole purpose of making money. This is pure misuse of the purpose for which it was given the land. The property will not be used to expand the airport nor will it ever be once it is built upon. The ADM is prepared to kill the ecosystem, sacrifice green spaces and eliminate the health and fitness benefits of the property solely for the purpose of commercial gain.

Protect Dorval

We, the residents of Dorval, Montréal and surrounding areas, need to express our strong opposition to ADM's decision to destroy the property known as "Golf Dorval" and to convert it into rental property for the purpose of generating rental income.

We object to the fact that an ecosystem developed over a 25 year period needs to be destroyed for the purpose of making money. The health and welfare and requests of the people in the community are being ignored for commercial gain.

The school board's budget proposal for the 2006-2007 school year includes the termination of ALL kindergarten assistant positions in the district as well as the Kindergarten literacy program. We believe this decision will destroy the quality of kindergarten programming.

Developmentally appropriate activities will no longer be feasible for students nor will they recive the individual attention that they need. Academic and literacy learning, social skills, creative opportunities, fine and large muscle practice, and a SAFE environment that should also be cheerful and fun will no longer be available to our children.

I have started this petition in the hopes of taking it to the 2007 Canadian Idol auditions. My goal is to prove to the executive producers, John Brunton, and Barbara Bowlby that each Canadian deserves the opportunity to pursue his or her dream of singing, and age should not be an issue.

In April of 2006 I attended the Canadian Idol auditions in Kitchener Ontario. I went there to ask the producers to consider producing another Idol competition.

I thought that if Mr.Brunton and Ms.Bowlby were sceptical of how successful an " Open Idol" would be, they could simply take advantage of the millions of viewers that tune into the show every week.

My suggestion was to put two 1-800 numbers up during the show and ask Canada to vote on it, at the final Canadian Idol show this year, announce what Canada had decided!

I was not treated very well. I was yelled at in front on hundreds of competitors and parents. I was told the producers were too busy to talk to people like me. I was grabbed at, and humiliated.

Rogers to offer China's propaganda package

Rogers Cable is sponsoring nine Chinese-language TV channels to broadcast in Canada, without warning its customers that the Chinese government will be using these channels to incite hatred and instill fanatic communist patriotism. A decision from the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) on whether the channels should be allowed to broadcast unedited is pending.

The fundamental news source for these nine channels is the Xinhua News Agency, dubbed "the World's Biggest Propaganda Agency" by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

According to a recent RSF investigation report, "The general public receives only superficial and distorted news ... as far as Chinese media goes, nothing is said, nothing is listened to and nothing is seen in China without the prior agreement of Xinhua.... At Xinhua, the administration and the CCP [Chinese Communist Party] are so alike that they are hard to separate."

The contempt for the truth and for human life surfaced in Chinese TV programs glorifying the 911 terrorist attacks. Beijing Television made a documentary called Attack America, proclaiming it to be an "educational film" that shows "America repaying its blood debts with blood."

Witness how China's state media deals with such issues as the 1989 student democracy massacre in Tiananmen Square. According to Chinese TV, the massacre didn't happen and the students were to blame for attacking the soldiers first. Imagine what that has done to the families of the dead. Imagine if your evening news blamed innocent Jews for provoking Nazi soldiers into gassing them.

When a Canadian Chinese-language broadcaster aired a news story produced by CCTV, one of the nine channels, that tried to frame Falun Gong for motivating a man to kill his wife, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) ruled that it was "unfair and improper in its method of linking the murderer to Falun Gong." CBSC further stated that it was "not journalism" but "nothing more or less than a biased attack on Falun Gong by the producer of that news item."

Such "news items" have run rampant in China and have resulted in widespread hatred, torture and death of men women and children who practice Falun Gong. An Amnesty International report titled The Crackdown on Heretical Organizations states how these types of "massive propaganda campaigns" have been used in many CCP attacks throughout history.

Unfortunately, Westerners, even many Canadian intellectuals, appear to have very little awareness of the destructive nature of CCP propaganda, whose ultimate purpose is to maintain power by controlling what Chinese people see and hear. The government's desire for control is further witnessed in its attempt to control the Internet through what has become known as the Great Firewall of China.

Rogers Cable, which stands to make money selling Chinese propaganda in the Canadian market, may deny that it is peddling lies. Rogers also seeks to justify propaganda profits by saying that "engagement" and "openness" have a positive effect on the Chinese situation. However, when discussing foreign propaganda mandates with CCP comrades, these initiatives are not spoken of in terms of sharing China's culture or in terms of prospective business ventures. They are regarded as classic communist "struggles" or "battles" to attain victories in its foreign propaganda initiatives. As the head of the foreign propaganda office of the CCP, Zhao Qizheng, states, "During this struggle, [we] need to make best use of the favorable opportunities ... and try to dominate the overseas media. Our goal is to have the overseas media follow our propaganda."

Westerners would be naive to think the world exists on a level playing field under the presumption that everyone behaves as we do, or that everyone's voice should be given an equal and valid perspective. It is simply not true.

The CCP is a totalitarian regime with absolute power that is accustomed to doing as it pleases. It is responsible for the estimated killings of more than 80 million of its own people during its 60-year rule. It has blocked all uncensored media from entering China. It has through its own media rallied hyper-nationalism and allegiance to the CCP. And it is under no obligation to answer for its actions. Now it is looking outward.

Rogers Cable is planning to bring this propaganda package to Canada. Mixed into the Chinese TV channels sports, entertainment and news will be programming designed to "guide public opinion" of Chinese Canadians living here. Neither the CRTC nor Rogers will be able to monitor or regulate the nine channels to uphold Canadian laws and industry standards.

This mouthpiece for everything Canadians abhor does not deserve the endorsement of the CRTC.

The stations are: CCTV-4, The Satellite Channel of Southern Television Guangdong, Southeast TV station, Dragon TV, China Yellow River Television Station, Beijing TV, Hunan Satellite TV, Jiangsu International TV Channel & CCTV Entertainment Channel. They are no different.

I am petitioning that we bring all of our Canadian troops home from Afganistan.

This is not our war to fight and we shouldn't be cleaning up the America's mess.

We are good people and our soldiers do not deserve to be sent to a war that isn't even theirs to fight, so please help bring them home.
