61. Human Trafficking: Help Raise Awareness and Bring it Before Parliament!!

Human Trafficking is a very profitable industry for those involved. But the people being trafficked are often stripped of their rights and freedoms and become 2nd class citizens to their captors. Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world.

Revenue from trafficked persons is estimated to be between 5 to 9 billion US dollars per year. In Canada, the RCMP estimate that 600-800 people are trafficked into Canada annually and that an additional 1,500 to 2,200 people are trafficked through Canada into the United States.

Many of the people being trafficked are either women or children, that are then funneled into other industries such as free labour market and prostitution.

If we can get enough people to sign this we can get this topic raised during parliament. This is all about raising awareness and getting the Canadian Government to do more for this pressing issue.

62. Support International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Funding

Canada has been a partner of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) continuously since the 1960s, regardless of the political party in power, and this includes the current Government. IPPF’s funding agreement with Canada ended on December 31, 2009.

IPPF submitted a proposal to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to renew its contract for funding in June 2009. To-date, IPPF has yet to receive an indication of whether its funding agreement will be renewed.

63. Decide the Use of Fluoride in the City of Red Deer via Plebiscite during the 2013 Election

The fluoridation of water in the City of Red Deer should be decided via plebiscite during the 2013 election to let the citizens decide the issue in a democratic process and in the process, do so at least cost.

Currently, there is another petition (Removal of Fluoride from the municipality of Red Deer) with the petition statement: “We, the Citizens, call on to the City of Red Deer to stop adding Fluoride to our municipal water supply”. That petition is available at:
http://www.gopetition.com/petition/44571.html

This petition is for the people to speak directly about fluoridation of water.

Speaking with a couple of the current City Councilors about the topic, fluoridation in municipal water is a divisive issue and a reasonable approach to such an issue is to have it decided directly by the people – not by special interest groups, not by special interest Councilors, not by corporations or by persons with vested interests.

Municipal water has undergone a fluoridation process for many, many years and taking time to better understand the process and the concerns. It is not a detrimental do or die situation. We can, at low cost, decide the issue via plebiscite during the 2013 Municipal Election.

In the meantime, speak with your Dentist, Doctor, Hygienist, call the University of Alberta Dental School, and research the topic via the Internet to be prepared with your YES/NO response come 2013.

66. Removal of Fluoride from the municipality of Red Deer

People should have the right to choose whether or not to be exposed to fluoride. Unfortunately many of us were never given that choice. Today it is almost impossible to escape fluoride. It is in the fountain pop at the drive thru, at your local coffee shop, bottled and draft beer, you get the idea. At home we cook, shower and bath in it, its ridiculous!

Now the thing you might find interesting is where does the fluoride come from? The fluoride used in our drinking water is an industrial waste product from the aluminum and phosphate fertilizer industry. It is an unprocessed contaminated waste with a number of toxins, particularly arsenic. This type of fluoride has never Been Tested for safety and effectiveness. However it has been very effective as rat poison and cockroach powder.

So why do we put this in our water? The answer is simple, money. But not money for us, or our community, money for the corporations. By promoting it as a some kind of dental miracle they are able to eliminate their waste and make a profit at the same time. But does it benefit our teeth? New evidence suggests that fluoridation is either unnecessary or doesn't work. Cavities have declined at similarly impressive rates throughout the entire western, industrialized world over the past half century where there was no fluoridation.

"Water fluoridation is the single largest case of scientific fraud, promoted by the government, supported by taxpayer dollars, aided and abetted by the ADA and the AMA, in the history of the planet."

- David Kennedy, DDS President International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology

Some Harmful effects of fluoride include.

Diminished IQ'S, hypothyroidism, increase in hip fractures, increase in infertility, cancer, abnormal bone development, skeletal fluorosis, dental fluorosis.

Fluoride is not meant to be swallowed, if you look on your tooth paste it will advise you to contact poison control if accidentally swallowed. Why is it okay to drink it then? It is an accumulated poison, so while you may not see the effects right now, there is a good chance you may experience them later. The choice is clear, remove it from our water, and those who still want fluoridation are still free to do so.

Please research this topic for yourself and find your own truths. Do not take Authority as Truth, but rather Truth as the Authority!!

67. Pass Bill C-393 now and save lives

The acceleration of globalization of the market over the last
three decades, greatly facilitated by the expanding
influence of neoliberalism in international economic politics,
has advanced the internationalization of pharmaceutical
research and has influenced the ways in which it is market,
researched, and developed. In lieu of all the benefits they
bring, the pharmaceutical industry’s biggest companies
face a battle between the goals of corporate wealth and
public health. A small number of corporations have come to
dominate the research agenda and operate in a system
which the relentless pursuit of profit takes priority over
public good. While the majority world suffers because they
are deprived of essential medicines and die of neglected
diseases, people in the minority world still benefit. The
reasons for lack of access are diverse and complex, but in
many cases the high prices of drugs are a barrier to needed
treatments. Prohibitive drug prices are often the result of
strong intellectual property protection (‘t Hoen, 2002). The
devastating consequences of implementing patents on
pharmaceuticals and the influence of the market on
prioritizing research and development has led to a
perpetuation of global inequality.

Thousands die of preventable or neglected diseases like
malaria, HIV or tuberculosis every day (Albright et al.
2005). The reason why not enough attention is called to
the matter is because the people who are dying are too
poor to command it. If the same situation was found in
developed countries it would most likely be lead news every
day and they would be devoting serious resources to
finding a cure as fast as possible. As it remains, just 10%
of the world’s research and development on health is
targeted on diseases affecting 90% of the world’s people
and sadly, of more than a thousand new medicines
developed over the last 25 years, just 1% were specifically
for diseases of tropical countries (Albright et al. 2005).
Similarly, it is Western Europe, North America, and Japan
who make up 80% of the world’s pharmaceutical market
where as Africa is 1% (Robinson, 2001). The people who
need the most drugs are the people with the least access
to them. Therefore, they go without. Little money is to be
made in the developing countries that suffer from disease
pandemics. Therefore, they get neglected.

It is clear that the current state of modern medicine and
the pharmaceutical industry is not well. It needs an
accurate diagnosis and appropriate course of treatment.
The remedy to reversing the effects of the symptoms can
be achieved; it will be a challenge but it must not be
ignored.

70. Save Eva's Phoenix

**** BREAKING NEWS****

The Land Eva's is built on has been recognized as surplus and relocation plans are underway. It will cost a lot of money to rebuild the shelter and I am asking all friends of Eva's Phoenix if they are willing to offer support by emailing the mayor and city officials as well as coming to the Government Management committee meeting on Wed November 9th at 930am. You can simply show up to offer support or you can sign up to speak and depute by emailing your name and address to gmc@toronto.ca.

This issue will then go to council in the THIRD WEEK OF NOVEMBER. Stopping the relocation is not an option but working together to make sure we are provided with a suitable location and enough money to rebuild is an option!!!

**** WHAT IS EVA'S PHOENIX??****

Eva's Phoenix is a transitional housing and training facility, run by Eva's Initiatives which formally opened in June 2000. Eva's Phoenix provides housing for 50 youth, aged 16 to 24 years, for up to a full year, and since 2002 has also allowed up to 160 youth each year, aged 16 to 29 years, to participate in its employment and pre-apprenticeship programs.

Working with business, labour and community partners, Eva's Phoenix provides homeless and at-risk youth with the opportunities needed to develop life skills, build careers and live independently.

Youth at Eva's Phoenix live in shared townhouse-style units with access to common areas. While at Eva's Phoenix, youth develop the skills to live independently through goal setting exercises, workshops and hands-on programs that are delivered in a supportive environment.

In combination with a Mentorship Program, youth are able to build stable support networks outside of the social service system. Peer Mentors and One-to-One Mentors provide a range of support to youth including running cooking classes, conducting leadership development activities and supporting the efforts of youth to successfully manage independent living.

Youth living at Eva's Phoenix must be involved in a training or employment program. While the youth learn work skills, Eva's Phoenix staff provides counselling, job placement assistance, housing search support, mentorship opportunities, follow-up support and a range of other services to help youth achieve and maintain self-sufficiency.

71. Demand a third party evaluation of the penny from Parliament

http://www.creditcardscanada.ca/news/2011-02-15-penny-brief

Over the past several years, the rising cost of production of the superannuated penny has come to the public's attention. Various evaluations of the penny's production costs have been done, some higher than the Government's assessment of 1.5c. Several factors are involved in the production cost of the penny:

- Producing the one-cent coins;
- Storing them;
- Transporting them;
- Going to a financial institution to obtain, roll and deposit them

This petition is to ask for a third party evaluation of these costs to ensure the fair treatment of the penny's demise and account for funds otherwise not accounted for.

77. The Government of Canada > NOT Harper's Government

The order has gone out from the Prime Ministers Office that Canadian Government Departments "no" longer call our Government 'The Canadian Government'. It seems we are now governed by' The Harper Government'

This is an action you might expect to see in a third World dictatorship country, not in a free and democratic Country like Canada.

Canadians are appalled at this action and we refuse to accept this 're-branding' of OUR country for the selfish political gain of one man. We feel this is a very serious matter and not something to be ignored.

We are sending the message to Stephen Harper that the Government in Canada is the Canadian Government. It is not Stephen Harper's Government. It is OUR government. My government, your government, Canada's Government, the government of every Canadian.

We wish to make it clear that Canadians DO care, very much, about the state of our Government.

78. I Am (Not Stephen Harper's) Canadian

The current governing party of Canada has issued a directive that reference to "Government of Canada" should be replaced by "Harper Government" in federal communications.

In changing the long-standing terminology "Government of Canada", the current governing party is seeking to equate its leader, Stephen Harper, with the the act of governing this country.

As a democracy, Canada is not run by one individual. It is a country run by an elected body, which is accountable to the people and answerable to the opposition.

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, "Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people."

The government of Canada is not Stephen Harper and Stephen Harper is not the government of Canada.

The government of Canada is the people and the people are the government of Canada.

One collective body, not one man, forms this government and make this country a beautiful place.

- - - -

Contexte :

79. Time for Canada to sever ties with the British Monarchy

Although probably the majority of Canadians wish to keep ties to the British Monarchy, I wish to revisit the idea of supporting such institutions. I personally believe it is no longer healthy for our society and as well not healthy for the monarchy to keep perpetuating the idea of birth right to rule. These ideas are archaic and I believe humans have progressed passed this.

I think our society should support the rise of humans who have the skill and capability to do the job. As well, the freedom to democratically choose those who we feel as the majority should represent and make decisions on behalf of our country.

The world is changing, supporting these institutions may have very little bearing or effect in our own country due to limitation of the monarchy's power, but the perceptual image has an effect globally. Other peoples, such as in counties of the middle east, are not so lucky with their monarchs.

Even though I no longer support our monarchy as I have in the past. My own idealism and thought process have deemed it no longer relevant and even dangerous to other counties of lesser fortunes.

I do wish the current monarch luck, and even feel a bit bad for writing this piece. But I feel is must be thought out for the benefit of Canadians and all humans if these institutions represent what is right and fair.

80. Canada Needs Our Own Monarch

I believe that Canada's democracy is severely impaired and in danger of a crash & complete destruction!

Ignorance about our form of government and apathy, has resulted in a continuing erosion of our democracy. The worst aspect of this erosion is the concentration of power in the Office of the Prime Minister!

Canada's constitution is a reflection of the British North America Act of 1867. That document was negotiated by prominent Canadians for Canadians and was presented whole and approved whole by the British parliament to create our nation. It was written to include checks and balances on power to the various branches of government. The sovereign has executive power but must work through the House of Commons & Senate to exercise that power. The judiciary is supposed to interpret & enforce the laws of the land, independent of the government of the day. Anti-monarchy activism has been successful in the name of democracy & nationalism. The erosion of the legitimacy of the crown & the crown's representative, the Governor-General, has created a vacuum in executive authority. That has certainly been the intention of successive Prime Ministers!

How can judges, senators & Governors be seen to act independently if they are dependent on the good graces of the Prime Minister's Office, who appointed them? This office is completely unelected, unconstitutionally sanctioned and operates with one purpose, to keep their boss, the Prime Minister, in power! This concentration of power in the PMO is DEFINITELY, NOT in the interest of Canadian democracy!

We are supposed to be a constitutional monarchy. When the Fathers of Confederation created Canada's unique version of constitutional monarchy, most Canadians felt a part of the greater British Empire and therefore recognized the legitimacy of a British monarch. That is not true today because of immigration from around the world and because of the natural development of a unique Canadian sense of identity. Rather than finish our incremental march to full independence, by patriating the crown, Prime Ministers have taken advantage of the current situation to increase their personal power. They have been successful by playing two cards, legitimacy based entirely on being elected & appeals to nationalism. Dependence on the ballot, as the only form of legitimacy, leaves us open to what I would call 'tyranny of the majority'. We have a senate that is supposed to represent regions equally & a monarch who is supposed to represent ALL of us with equal regard. Legitimacy is based on the consent of the people, regardless of the form of selection.

Voting, particularly first past the post, or 50% + one does not, in itself represent the will of the people, only that small number who voted for the elected members. If the ballot is to mean anything, we must address this problem as well as the voter apathy that results in lower and lower voter turnout. Of course governments won't do that! The current system is to their advantage.

It has been made abundantly clear that we will be unable to change our constitution, even if Canadians wanted to become a republic. So I suggest we reform what we can. One of the best things about our system is that it is organic, adaptable to any national context and can continually evolve. That's our distinct form of democracy, as it was conceived, in 1867. That would, of course, require that Canadians understand the system we have, why we have it, how it is supposed to work and what the implications of changing it would be. Democracy can only work if a public is informed, engaged & active in the democratic process.

Many of the younger generation don't even know that we are a monarchy. Many Canadians, even the government and national media, treat the Queen like a visiting Head of State and her family, like visiting celebrities.

Constitutional monarchy can only work if a monarch is resident in and seen to be a part of the national daily life. I'd argue that our countrymen must see royalty working for us in our own daily Canadian experience.

The current situation, where Canada has a foreign Head of State is intolerable. It becomes more intolerable with each passing decade.

I believe that we need our own, resident royal family.

The only requirement to make this happen is an act of Parliament that changes the succession laws. We could have anyone we liked when Her Majesty passes away or abdicates. She could abdicate tomorrow, since Canada is a separate crown, with no effect on her role in the UK, or her other realms.

The current Queen will likely be with us for at least another 10 years, if her mother's long life is any indication. There is, of course, no guarantee. Canada needs to find our own Heir Apparent to take the Maple Crown when the current monarch is no longer in office. We need to establish who this person is as soon as possible. He/she & Canadians need time to get used to each other. Canada could also start experiencing the benefits of having a constitutional monarchy for the first time, right away.

It would make sense for the indigenous house to be a branch of the current royal house. After all they inherited the authority of every sovereign house that has been associated with this land since Europeans arrived. One could argue, that Canada's only right to sovereignty over these lands stems from the rights of the monarch, as Queen of Canada, who inherited lands seeded to her family, and not to the government of Canada or the United Kingdom. First Nations, some with royal traditions of their own, have negotiated treaties with the crown or at least have expressed loyalty to that same crown throughout our history. Were the sovereign present in Canadian daily life, this special relationship may have allowed for greater prominence & respect to be afforded our First Nations.

There is precedent for this type of evolution, a new royal house being a branch of the old. For instance, Brazil gained it's independence and 80 years of economic & social progress when they took the heir to the Portuguese throne as their own Emperor in the early 19th century. Norway is another example.

What if, when the current sovereign passes away, the new monarch was selected through a partially elective process. What if the only requirement to run for the office was to be a descendant of Canada's first Queen, Queen Victoria and be a resident of Canada? To keep the candidates above the fray, they could be required to have a group advocate on their behalf, in the election, rather than running actively themselves? The post would be for life unless resignation is requested. If the post becomes vacant then the same process could be followed or some other succession law could be enacted, with the consent of Canadians, after we have our own resident family.

This way Canada could get it's own monarch and that person or family would have the legitimacy of election as well as ancestral heritage.

We need someone who will defend the constitution from Prime Ministers who try to close parliament instead of facing criticism! The senate must effectively protect the interests of the regions equally, not their respective political parties. Minorities must be represented at the highest levels. First Nations must have their unique status reaffirmed in the minds of all Canadians.

According to our constitution, the cornerstone of government, federal & provincial as well as the judiciary, is the crown. For that institution to be disrespected and misunderstood creates a vacuum of legitimacy that power hungry politicians are too happy to step into. Addressing this impairment goes a long way to saving our democracy. Let's get it done so we can move onto the next challenge.

83. Overhaul the National Sex Offender Registry Immediately!

Since becoming law in 2004, Canada's National Sex Offender Registry has not assisted in ONE criminal case.

Registration isn't even mandatory. If a convicted sex offender is ordered onto the registry, the RCMP have no way to keep track of them. In Canada, our registry relies on the honour system, dependent on the goodwill of our convicted sex offenders.

Computer system is archaic - RCMP has needed to create separate hard copy systems, a Rolodex or an Excel spreadsheet.

There can be NO pro-active use, use is only for after a crime has occurred.

Annual budget for a National Sex Offender Registry to keep convicted pedophiles and predators away from our children is $400,000 (My Alberta Premier's salary is $208,000)

Correctional Services of Canada refuses to inform the RCMP of when convicted sex offender have finished their sentence.

Police Officers cannot access the system.

The Federal Government is obsessed with the privacy rights of our convicted sex offenders at the expense of the privacy rights of our children's bodies & souls.

Prosecutors are using the Registry as a negotiation chip during plea bargains. In other words: plead guilty, and even though you're a convicted sex offender, you won't have to register.

In Canada, we Pardon our convicted sex offenders.
When this is done, all information from the registry is destroyed.
Convicted sex offenders should never be allowed to be pardoned. After years of research and debate, it is clear that there is no cure for pedophilia.

84. Pursue Charges for RCMP/Police who Break the Law

RCMP and police officers in Canada who often misuse their granted powers tend to either not have any criminal charges laid, charges dropped, or the minimum possible charge (i.e. misconduct). Officers if charged also face little disciplinary action from the police.

This tends to occur from "self investigations" of the RCMP. If RCMP or police officers in Canada break the law (i.e. Assault, Murder, Manslaughter, DUI, etc.) they should be investigated by civilians and not other police forces, especially their own.

86. Time to change the rules on Canada's mortgage default insurance

With very few providers of mortgage default insurance in Canada, the market structure is characterized as oligopolistic, non-competitive, and hence, the cost of the insurance is too high. Furthermore, how mortgage default insurance is charged, does not equate to the added risk associated with the loan.

For example, the home buyer purchasing a home pays a one-time premium based on the total amount of the mortgage and not just on the portion exceeding 80% of the purchase price – the high-ratio portion that increased the risk of default. Remember you don’t need the insurance for mortgages up to 80% loan-to-value. This one-time insurance premium, unfairly based on the total amount of the loan is typically unattainable and therefore the home buyer elects to add it to the mortgage. Consequently the home buyer’s equity position is immediately depleted by the cost of the insurance plus interest.

A better, more equitable practice would be to base the cost of the insurance on the added risk (that portion of the mortgage above the 80% threshold). It would be paid on a monthly basis like mortgage-life and mortgage-disability insurance, and best of all, you could cancel it at any time if you could prove your mortgage was no longer greater than 80% of the property’s value. That would be easy to prove. Most often property values are going up. In addition, your outstanding mortgage balance is going down with each regular scheduled mortgage payment you make. Before long, you could pay for an appraisal to determine the market value of your house. As soon as your mortgage drops to 80% or less of the appraised value, you cancel the insurance.

One more problem associated with the current system: Even though you paid for the default insurance, and paid handsomely, in the event of a default, and subsequent power of sale, or foreclosure, if the insurer has to pay out money to cover a loss (the sale proceeds didn’t cover the mortgage amount outstanding) they will register a judgement against you, the home owner, to recover their money. This is absurd and nonconforming with the standard practice of any other insurance coverage.

I am looking to get as many signatures as I can before I send this to Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs and the Competition Bureau. We must get more companies to provide mortgage default insurance in Canada and to offer the protection on a monthly basis, based on the appropriate level of risk (the amount of money above the 80% threshold), and to be able to cancel the policy at any time if the aforementioned risk is eliminated.

Finally, the absurd practice of giving the insurer recourse to money paid out must be abolished. Canadians are paying too much for mortgage default insurance and the practice is unfair.

88. Stop illegal deforestation at Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries

The only host plant of the monarch butterfly (milkweed) is often a noxious weed in Canada. In the USA there is a loss of biodiverse agriculture and agricultural lands to urban sprawl and use of pesticides and herbicides.

In Mexico there is illegal logging of Oyamel fir trees within the Monarch Butterfly Habitat. In 2009 According to Monarch Watch over 50 percent of the monarchs died due to mudslides, freezing rains and floods within and around the sanctuaries.

89. Support for a National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking in CANADA

It is quintessential that Canada have a National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking. According to the US Department of State’s 2008 Trafficking in Persons Report, Canada is a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking.

The RCMP estimates that 600-800 persons are trafficked into Canada annually, predominantly for sexual purposes, and that an additional 1,500-2,200 persons are trafficked through Canada into the United States.

Women, children, and men have been identified as victims of trafficking in Canada according to the US Department of State’s 2006 Trafficking in Persons Report.

While there is no reliable data on the number of persons trafficked within Canada, Aboriginal women are disproportionately affected according to the 2007 Report of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women.

Girls as young as 12 are trafficked in Canada for sexual purposes according to Criminal Intelligence Service Canada’s 2008 Strategic Intelligence Brief, Organized Crime and Domestic Trafficking in Persons in Canada.

As stated by a leading anti-human trafficking voice, MP Joy Smith:

"The complex and clandestine nature of trafficking in persons and the rapidly increasing occurrence of this crime demands a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that draws together the existing frameworks, stakeholders, and agencies. I am convinced a Canadian National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking would address the challenges raised by implementing an integrated, targeted response to human trafficking. Such an approach would include benchmarks and measurable targets to ensure that continued progress is made."

Please sign the petition to ensure that Canada takes a comprehensive and national stance to combat human trafficking!

90. We need a justice system not a legal system

2009 Murder gets 5 years in a hospital for killing innocent on bus.

2006 Saskatoon inmates get porno and pizza party for new years.

2005 Repeat pedophile gets an 18 month sentence.

2004 Yet another repeat paedophile receives 1 yr sentence.

mid - late 90s Liberals allow inmates to vote; yet an individual who has never committed a crime has to go under heavy scrutiny to own hunting rifle.
