301. Raise the punishment for Cruelty to animals in Ontario!!

In the peel region of Mississagua, Ontario animal Abuse is considered a criminal act. Although the punishment is rather light why should someone who kills or seriously abuses an animal be charged with something as light as a $2000 fine or 2 years in prison. This is not enough. We the people who care about animals think this should be much more and would like to see this punishment upgraded so horrible acts of cruelty are not let off so light.

In a recent act of abuse 3 young men in their 20's and one girl in her teens were see carrying a defenseless female iguana towards traintracks and there they dumped her and ran. When the witness ran over to the injured iguna
they noticed thermal burns on the neck! In the peel region of Mississauga, Ontario where this horrible act happened it is a crimanl act. Sadly the offenders haven't been caught.

If you like many would like to see the punisment raised for people who have abused animals please sign! Also If you don't live in the peel region contact your local Humane society and tell them that you think punishment for horrible acts are too low! NO MORE CRULTY TO ANIMALS!!!!!!!!

302. Stop animal abuse before the Greece Olympics 2004

Animal abuse is widespread in Greece and includes starvation, neglect, cruelty and poisoning. Poisoning of both strays and owned pets happens every day; documented witness reports of this practice are abundant and have even been shown on Greek television. Poisoning is indiscriminate, and can affect children, adults and animals alike. Offenders must be prosecuted and fined for this illegal activity.

Given the current frequency of poisoning cases, it is also a concern that the numbers will step up, as the country prepares to host the Olympics 2004. Tourists are horrified at the suffering they see whilst on holidays in Greece, many vowing never to return. Given the magnitude of the problem, the Greek government needs to take an active role, working together with private animal welfare groups around Greece. Give the strays of Greece a sporting chance to survive the Olympics 2004!

303. HELP a Young Orca Whale Live Free

This petition is to object to the permanent capture of a young Orca whale, named A-73 (the "A" is for her family, or pod name, and the "73" is her birth order in the pod).

A-73 was noticed a few months ago in Puget Sound, where her family does not often travel. Her pod seems to have left her behind after she was orphaned, and she is very ill with legions and dietary problems including malnutrition.

Right now this highly intelligent, social, mammal, has been seen playing with driftwood and rubbing herself against logs for hours at a time. Scientist say it's because she is lonely—imagine the loneliness she would feel if she were to spend the rest of her life in captivity, without the freedom to hunt, or swim, or play. Instead, she could be doomed to a life of circus tricks and confinement in a pen, which places her so painfully close to freedom.

The Vancouver Aquarium graciously has agreed to take the whale in for medical treatment and try as quickly as possible to re-introduce her to her pod. However, the US and Canadian governments have not developed a solid and responsible plan incase the transfer of A-73 and the proposed reunion with her family pod, who is around Vancouver from June to September, is unsuccessful. Being that the pod initially abandoned the young whale, some scientists say the chance of reintroduction could be slim.

Would the aquarium industry then be allowed to add the orca to its collection of captives?

We would like assurances from the Canadian government that that there is
absolutely no chance that this whale will end up in captivity for the rest of her
life.

This petition in particular asks:

1.) The Vancouver Aquarium to guarantee every attempt will be made at releasing A-73 to live with it's native pod;
2.) If the pod does not accept A-73, the Vancouver Aquarium should GARAUNTEE the release and further monitoring of the whale outside of captivity. The Aquarium should administer any treatment needed, outside of a sea-pen or captive enclosure;
3.) The Canadian and United States governments to create and enforce laws regarding the capture and treatment of all whales in the Canadian & U.S. waters-- including the import of wild captured animals into Canadian & U.S. aquariums.

305. Pressure meat industries to come up with more humane ways of killing!

Approximately 750,000,000 animals are slaughtered each year for food.

Few people who eat meat, fish, or products made from them are aware of how the animals are killed.

The most popular method of slaughter is when the animal is stunned by a number of inhumane methods (gas, carbon dioxide, electrical shock) allowing them to drain the blood from the animal while it is unconcious, but still alive unable to function.

We people of the BPI group feel that the meat and fish industries should find another way of killing the animals. We understand it is a difficult area and any other way of killing would raise meat prices. But we feel it is a minor drawback to the rights of the animals.

We would like the industries to put some efort into the proces of finding a new method.

307. Raise Animal Abuse Fines

In Miami, Florida, in the US, and all over the world, the Animal Abuse Fines are very low.

For example, for putting 4 illegal Pitt Bull dogs in a small cage with not enough oxygen, the fine was roughly $450 US dollars.

I, and many other people, find this horrible. The fines should go higher, everywhere in the USA, the country of freedom and respect!

Even though my example of animal abuse fines takes place in the USA, and the recipient is the US president, I am asking that people all over the world who believe to stop this sign, so we can make one more country a better environnment for our animals.

308. Stop Seal Hunting in Canada

Hunters are set to defy protests and slaughter more than a quarter of a million seals to supply an international trade in furs and health supplements that will soon target Britain's shops.

Sealers are set to defy international protests by clubbing shooting more animals than they have for decades, leaving the Atlantic sea ice off Newfoundland stained red.

The Canadian government has issued licences to shoot or club to death 275,000 harp seals, almost all pups only two weeks old.

The massacre has returned with a vengeance in the past four years following 20 years of strict controls imposed after protests. The two-week-old pups are prized for their soft white fur.

The hunters have vowed to proceed despite the fact that the seal population has already been devastated by global warming, which has melted the ice floes on which the mammals give birth. The lack of ice means that the seals have been forced to give birth in the water, where their pups drown.

Worldwide horror at the hunt led to a boycott of seal fur by most fashion houses and the European Union imposed a ban on certain seal products. To appease animal welfare actitivists, the sealers now try to kill the animals first by shooting them with high-powered rifles, but always carry a club to smash the skulls of any seals that are still alive. However, one group of international vets found that four out of five sealers do not check whether seals are dead before skinning them.

After years of being taboo, seal fur is making a comeback. Last year the Louis Vuitton collection shown in Paris featured coats, tunics and pinafore dresses made from sealskin. Donatella Versace recently featured sealskin in her first collection.

The number of seals being killed has quadrupled in the past four years, and Canadian government scientists estimate the population is declining again by about 1 per cent a year. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans' own documents assert that these forms of commercial trade encourage illegal sealing.

Seal hunting is clearly an industry from another century, and should have been relegated to the history books.

310. Adding Idaho on the felony list of animal abuse

When someone abuses an animal, in Idaho, they are given a misdemeaner. But in many other states they are felonies. I believe that animals have a right and if people are so cruel that they have to hurt or kill any animal they should be given a felony. Misdemeaners are like a slap on the hand. I have done lots of research and believe that I daho should change the law of being given a stupid misdemeaner. We need to stand up for the ones (animals) who aren't able to stand up for themselves!

311. Increase the Permitted Length of Reptiles

In 1993, London, Ontario drafted a bylaw which restricts the keeping of non-venomous snakes more than 2 feet in length and non-venomous lizards more than 1 foot in length. Also, the maximum number of animals per dwelling is two.

We find this current bylaw to be strict and restrictive. Toronto, Ontario has a bylaw which restricts snakes more than 3 meters(9.84 ft) in length and lizards more than 2 meters(6.56 ft) in length. Kitchener, Ontario allows snakes up to 2 meters(6.56 ft) in length and lizards up to 2 feet in length to be kept.

Cornsnakes, kingsnakes and milksnakes grow to an adult length between 2 feet and 7 feet long and they remain docile and have never caused a human death. There are Boas and Pythons smaller than 6 feet long that are docile and are not dangerous. Many lizards grow to more than 1 foot in length. Some geckos and bearded dragons attain an adult length less than 2 feet long.

The responsible reptile owners out way the irresponsible owners and we feel that an increase in the permitted length of snakes and lizards is suitable and does not pose a danger to owners or the public.

313. Fear Factor & NBC have total disregard for the welfare and treatment of reptiles.

Fear Factor & NBC have total disregard for the welfare and treatment of reptiles. For any avid viewers who watch this show you will know what i mean, they have in their first 2 seasons on air twice mistreated and neglectfully mistreated reptile ( snakes ) on their "thrill seeking tv show". There first blatent mistreatment of reptiles came on there first season as they dumped several species of snakes ( Boa Constrictor Imperators / Burmese pythons & corn /king snakes) into a box with a human in the event ot overcome there fears of snakes for a cash reward.

As stated by contestants the snakes were " COLD AS ICE " this implies the snakes had to have been cooled to keep the snakes inactive as possible ? yes that is what that means . While doing so this offers the chance of transmitting inter species diseases to other snkes , promotes the chance of a cold blooded reptile contracting Respitory infections ( which CAN kill the animals in question. Now on 3/11/02 there show airs with the intent to do the same . They show there contestants carelessly grabbing fragile snakes ( corn snakes ) and carelessly picking them up on a timed basis to win a cash prize! This in itself is appauling to watch , needless to say the chances of injuring the snakes ex: breaking ribs , backs and causing stress to the snakes which can lead to death , starvation of the snakes in extreme cases.During the filming of FEAR FACTOR the show atleast one snake with its Jaw disengaged, due to handling. Now if this show was to have contestants carelessly toss around any fur bearing animals in the pursuit of " TV entertainment sake" they would be harshly repremanded for there actions.

Now is the time for ALL Reptile lovers to join together to show NBC / Fear Factor this will not be tolerated at the expensive of a reptile or ANY animals to be treated in this fashion. Together in numbers we ALL can make our voices heard and have them understand that what they are doing is no different then the person that doesnt feed the dog , beats there cats or mistreats ANY animal ni matter its status in the world this will not be taking lightly !!!

314. Abolish stupid polls about animals

Animals deserve a decent quality of life as much as humans but personally i would always be more worried about wars and the death and destructions of human lives rather than animals, who should occasionally be left to fend for themselves.

Animals near to extinction should be of course saved but should we not care about our own species more than others, thousands of millions of pounds are given to animals that could save childrens lives.

315. End Procter & Gamble's Cruel Animal Testing

In P&G's cosmetic & household product testing, caustic chemicals are forced into rabbits' eyes & applied to their raw, shaved skin. Laboratory workers lock the rabbits in restraining devices so they are unable to move while chemicals burn into their eyes & skin.

The rabbits are given no sedatives or pain killers to ease their suffering. They sometimes break their necks & backs in a desperate struggle to get away.

Those who survive are used again ... until they are finally killed.

P&G's innocent victims include rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, & ferrets.
Even thought these tests are not required by law.

P&G insists on continuing this torture.

P&G claims to be a world leader in researching humane testing methods.

But the reality is that P&G spends more money in seven days on advertising than it has spent in 11 years on alternatives to painful & lethal animal tests.

These cruel & unnecessary experiments are paid for with profits from the sales of P&G products.

Every bottle of Pantene or Dawn,
every tube of Crest, every packet of Tampax tampons, every box of Tide, Bounce or Bold, every roll of Bounty,
& every can of IAMS or Eukanuba that is purchased means more money for painful experiments.

We think you would agree-- going without P&G products is a small price to pay to end animal suffering.

Fortunately, there are many safe, effective & humane alternatives to P&G's Tide of Torture.

Hundreds of companies develop, manufacture & sell safe consumer products without animal testing.
They use newer, more effective methods such as human cell cultures, chemical tests & computer models or simply use the thousands of ingredients that have been in use for years.

Million of Americans choose to purchase their consumer products from companies that do not harm or kill animals.

By buying cruelty-free, you support the growing trend toward kinder & more effective saftey testing. You send a message to P&G that when they hurt animals, they hurt their profits.
Your purchasing decisions make a difference!

P&G says animal tests provide product saftey.

Physicians disagree.

"As an emergency room physician who has treated poisoning & exposures to dangerous products, I disagree with the contention that animal tests are necessary to determine the safety of cosmetic & household products.

Animal tests does not protect consumers from unsafe products. In my 15 years as an emergency room physician, I have never found the results of an animal test to be of any benefit in guiding the treatment of patients who have been poisoned.

Animal tests provide only the illusion of safety, because of the significant anatomical & physiological difference between animals & humans.

I call upon Procter & Gamble to join the ever-growing list of responsible companies that have declared an immediate moratorium on animal-based product testing."

316. Ban Animal Entertainment in Circuses in the USA

The animals used in the circus travel many miles every year without the proper care and abuse. Elephants are chained up and forced to stand in their own waste. They are caged in the heat without water. Elephants are trained with abusive methods, they are mentally broken down with brutal beatings some days at a time, they are beaten with clubs and shocked with electric prods, stabbed with sharp hooks and whipped. Baby elephants are taken from their mothers at one year of age and are stripped of their wildlife social bonds. Elephants in the wild live up to 70 years old. They live in herds and have large extended families. They take baths and find shade in hot weather. Large cats are also stripped of their wildlife traits. They can't hunt for food, sleep in the sun, and roam for miles each day. Lets put a stop to this abuse and stop using animals as entertainment in the circus.

320. Stop Summertime Hunting in Minnesota

The Bear Interest Group is working for an Ethical balance between Humans, Bears, and the Environment. This petition is to The Honorable Governor Jesse Ventura, Minnesota State Senators and House Representatives.

Please show your support by signing this petition to restrict Hunting to AFTER Labor Day in September, and before Fishing Opener in May !
It is high time that Minnesota initiates No Hunting during our Peak Tourism Season, to keep our summer time free from worry !

Summer is vacation time in Minnesota with Millions of tourists, 850,000 students out of school, and thousands of families visiting summer cabins.
Many people feel uncomfortable in the forest alongside hunters. Too many people have been mistaken for game, or hit by stray bullets. See our hunting accident report at www.BearInterestGroup.com.

In the year 2000, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) moved Bear Season Opener from September 1st to August 22nd. Hunting is increasing in summer and is particularly dangerous because leafy vegetation obscures visibility but does not stop bullets. Tourists need to be warned that over 20,000 bear hunters, some of them novices as young as twelve, will be sitting in the woods wearing camouflage, obscured by leaves, and carrying high-powered rifles. No one is required to wear orange.
Unsuspecting tourists may indeed be wearing black or brown.
Bullets can travel hundreds of yards through leaves and miles through the air.

Currently, hunting in Minnesota is conducted all 12 months of the year. During the summer, the animals being hunted are crow, fox and raccoon. Now add bear. These animals could easily be harvested with better pelts, during the other nine months of the year.
Our Bill will help all animals that need quiet summers to raise their young. When gun shots ring through the air, animals go on the run ! They are deprived of sufficient food and are denied the opportunity to teach their young how to survive.

We support hunting in the fall after the Labor Day weekend, but during the warm months we support safety for the millions of tourists and residents who want to enjoy Minnesota's vacationland without worry.

We, at the Bear Interest Group (BIG), have met with the DNR four times, to try to understand their position and learned that the DNR has no plan to mitigate the danger. They have not mentioned any plans to put up signs to warn tourists that hunters are in the woods during this time, and they are not requiring anyone to wear blaze orange.
Most tourists and residents are unaware that bear season opens this early.

This change also effects the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Yes, bear hunting is allowed in the BWCAW.
This change in the hunting season enables hunters to Shoot Big Game in the BWCAW with Shot Guns, Rifles and Pistols starting August 23rd and for the following 7 weeks of the Bear Season.
Boat Motors' are NOT allowed, but Guns are !!

You need to be informed of this significant change in the Hunting Season dates. Once you know, then it becomes your choice to be outdoors during the hunting seasons !

BIG has spent two years researching the economical, environmental, and safety concerns of allowing hunting during the summer and we are finding strong support among the public and the legislature for our bill. Nevertheless, the DNR is unwilling to delay the opening of bear hunting to after Labor Day. If the DNR is correct that there is a growing bear population, the reason they stated for issuing the early opener, there are other ways to control bears without threatening public safety.

321. Ban the Sale of Reptiles as Pets

Reptiles should not be sold as pets. Keeping these animals exposes owners to salmonella infections and often results in the suffering and death of the reptile.

More and more people are buying reptiles as pets, causing both an increase in salmonella poisoning cases as well as a growing market for these wild animals, who frequently suffer and die due to incorrect handling and improper care.

Due to contact, both direct and indirect, with pet reptiles, 93,000 people in the United States are infected with salmonella each year, and thousands are hospitalized. Unfortunately children, ages 5 years and under, make up the majority of cases because of their developing immune systems. In fact, reptile-associated salmonellosis can be fatal. It is responsible for the death of 20 people each year and has caused several infant deaths in recent years.

Reptiles, such as turtles, lizards, and snakes, are non-domesticated animals, unlike other companion animals such as dogs and cats, requiring very special care. Frequently these animals are purchased and mistreated due to the new owner's unfamiliarity with a reptile's unique food and care requirements.

Reptiles sold as pets are both caught in the wild and raised in captive environments. While concerns with human health and animal welfare remain whether the animal is wild-caught or captive-bred, there is additional stress and suffering for the wild-caught animals who have to endure capture and transportation from their natural environments. Prohibiting the sale of reptiles as pets will help reduce occurrences of reptile-associated salmonellosis and allow the animals to live out their natural life-spans without the pain or distress brought about by the reptile trade.

History: Between 1970 and 1975 hatchling red-eared slider turtles were a popular pet for children in the US. During this time, 250,000 cases of reptile-associated salmonellosis in children and infants were reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In response to this, in 1975 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration enacted a ban on the sale of turtles with a shell of less than four inches in length. This led to a 77% decrease in the number of annual cases of reptile-associated salmonellosis reported to the CDC.

The number of pet reptiles in the U.S. is again increasing. According to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association 2000 survey on pet ownership, 3.9 million American households have one or more pet reptiles. This is a shocking 44% increase since 1998. Reptile-associated salmonellosis cases have risen along with the current pet reptile trend.

It is clear that current public education efforts and media attention on this issue have been ineffective in preventing this illness since the number of annual reptile-associated salmonellosis cases reported to the CDC have nearly doubled since 1995. In a 1999 public advisory the CDC stated that reptile-associated salmonellosis poses a "substantial health threat to humans."

In addition, reptiles are subject to serious abuse and neglect in the reptile trade. In fact, it is estimated that 90% of reptiles caught in the wild die within their first year of captivity due to mistreatment and neglect suffered during their capture and transport. Many reptiles, both wild-caught and capitive-bred, also perish at the hands of reptile owners who are unprepared to meet the specialized care requirements of these animals.

The sale of reptiles as pets should be banned in order to protect the American public, and in particular children, from reptile-associated salmonellosis. This action will also eliminate the needless animal suffering and mortality brought about by the reptile trade.

322. Petition For Restructuring Of The Patient Protection Act Requiring Patient Permission For EVERY Expe

My son, Shane, was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). CDH is a birth defect that occurs when the diaphragm does not fully form allowing the abdominal organs to enter into the chest cavity, preventing the lungs from growing. He was born at a small, country hospital and transferred to a larger, university hospital. When Shane arrived at this hospital, he was doing so well he wasn't even intubated, amazing for a kid that had only 1 lung, but oxygen alone seemed to stabilize him enough for transfer, and he was wide awake, and his eyes were focused when they wheeled him in to say good-bye before he boarded the helicopter. By the next day, he was paralyzed on Pavulon and ventilated-- standard procedure to rest his lungs and truly stabilize before his repair. During the 3 days before his repair, the surgeons explained to us that gore-tex would be used but we never saw them the morning before Shane's surgery, and we were never even asked to sign a consent form. After 6 hours in surgery, the surgeon came out and told us that he had used part of Shane's lung sequestration to repair his diaphragm. The lung sequestration was the bottom portion of Shane's lung that hadn't fully formed or inflated and looked like a deflated balloon. He had an extra blood vessel going from his heart to this "squished" portion of lung, which was not removed during the repair and which caused congestive heart failure. This was an extremely experimental procedure, never documented in medical journals, never even tried on lab animals, and it just didn't even make common sense to use damaged tissue with no elasticity. Our consent for this procedure was never asked or given. For 4 months, Shane couldn't be stabilized. His blood gases were so out of whack that an ECMO machine was parked beside him for weeks, but it was never used. He endured pneumonia 4 times, dozens of blood infections, a tracheostomy, and by the time his 2nd repair was done, he had suffered severe brain damage leaving him blind and deaf and in the intensive care unit for a total of 10 months.

323. Coalition for the DC Animal Shelter

Whereas, the District of Columbia government is currently in the process of awarding a new contract to manage the city's animal control and animal shelter efforts.

Whereas, the last time the city undertook this process, five years ago, the contract was initially awarded to an underqualified, inexperienced, and poorly funded organization.

Whereas, just four months later, the shelter was in chaos, the animals' living areas were filthy, and the adoptions program was in total disarray.

Whereas, at the time, dogs and cats were packed in overcrowded conditions and left in cages covered with their own waste, often with little or no food, while sick and injured animals sometimes went for days without treatment.

Whereas, only after a series of news stories uncovered the horrific conditions there and the D.C. Council held a hearing on the issue was a new contract awarded to the Washington Humane Society, the group that currently manages both programs.

Whereas, it appears that a similar process is unfolding this year, and that the contract may once again be awarded to an organization that does not have the experience, qualifications, or financial stability to fulfill its mission in aiding and protecting the animals and people of the city.

Whereas, the city's budget process has left this year's contract vastly underfunded.

Whereas, the DC animal control and shelter programs cost roughly $1.3 million to run in the current fiscal year, yet the city's budget for next year only allocates $700,000 for both programs.

Whereas, the average amount spent on animal control in 16 comparable U.S. cities is $2.62 per resident per year, yet the District would be spending less than half that amount -- only $1.22 per person. (source: National Animal Control Association)

Whereas, it would clearly be difficult, if not impossible, for any organization to provide the animal control and shelter services the people and animals of D.C. deserve for the amount budgeted by the city.

Whereas, dozens of prominent animal welfare and pet support organizations have joined together in the Coalition for the D.C. Animal Shelter to fight for the city's animal shelter and control contract to be fully funded and awarded to a qualified group.

Whereas, the goal of the Coalition is not to advocate or promote the merits of any particular humane organization in the contract process, only to ensure that the contract is fully funded and fairly awarded to a qualified organization.

Whereas, the Coalition believes that any organization hired to run the shelter and animal control needs to be experienced in law enforcement, have a track record in shelter management and be financially stable.

324. Make Bio-testing of all products law

Make Bio-testing (non-invasive, using state of the art technology) of all products used in and around our bodies, plants and animals absolutely compulsory. This would avoid the catastrophic consequences to humans, animals and plants of the widespread contamination by chemical, radiation, oil/petroleum, nuclear, pharmaceutical and biological agents.

REMEMBER, IN EVERY SINGLE CASE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION, GENETIC DAMAGE, NUCLEAR POLLUTION, CHEMICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL DAMAGE/DEFORMITY, AND "SAFETY" STANDARDS CREATED FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF THESE PROBLEMS, THERE IS ONE FACTOR COMMON TO ALL. In EVERY CASE, there was a whitecoated, academically impeccable, well credentialled and well paid (or well paid OFF) SCIENTIST WHO WAS GIVEN THE RIGHT OF VETO ON SAFETY...

There needs to be a new standard of BIO-SAFETY which simply means that anything that interferes with our oxygen uptake, heartrate, brainwaves, pulse and bio-meridian electric field and causes loss of capacity or downgrading of any of the above, should not be able to be sold without a rating of safety from 1 to 10, with 10 being the safest to all major body functions. The same should apply to animals, and plants, which can be tested for slowing of sap flow and lack of capillary response, just like human & animal blood flow, cortisol etc. Thermal imaging, simple medical instruments can be used to test this on an instant response basis. We DON'T need a five year, fund sucking 'scientific' study on safety to give us all the damaging exposures that have been sanctioned by these elitists, who have said 'this is totally afe', or 'this is safe enough to pass'. We all pay the price for their arrogant lack of care - why aren't their safe chemicals tested on scientist guinea pigs, diluted of course, just like our drinking water containing poisons, and ag. runoffs which are classed as safe. Remember that NUCLEAR pollution was pronounced totally safe by the American Academy of Science in the 1940's, and tobacco, and DDT, and Thalidomide, and thousands of others. We now have BSE because nobody bothered to bio-test animals for their body and systemic reaction to being fed manure mixed with chemicals and body parts of other (even diseased) species. Nature never ever sinned against any species in history, equal to the damage caused 'scientifically qualified' humans. DEMAND PROOF OF DYNAMIC BIO-SAFETY, NOT FIVE YEAR FARCES. Our planet deserves it and so do we.

326. China Bear Rescue - Positive Action

The Animals Asia Foundation in Hong Kong has signed an agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA) and the Sichuan Forestry Department (SFD) to free 500 Moon Bears on the worst farms in Sichuan Province and to work together to bring bear
farming to an end.

This "China Bear Rescue" is well underway with 118 Moon Bears now in the care of Animals Asia at their rescue centre in Chengdu, China.

The facts on bear farming: The official number of farmed bears in China is 6,992 (less now with 118 in the care of AAF). Bear bile is not
an aphrodisiac - it is an efficacious medicine with a 3,000 year history, but one which is totally replaceable with herbs and synthetics. In the market today, there is an oversupply of
bear bile which is why the farmers are looking for new markets, hence the placing of it in ridiculous things like shampoo and "Bear Bile Soda"!!!! Some bears have been in these terrible cages for up to 22 years. Bear farming
also exists in Vietnam and Korea.

The CWCA and SFA are doing the right thing and paving the way towards the end of bear farming. Money raised from advertising on this petition will go to help the Animals Asia Foundation fund and build the sanctuary for 500 rescued beautiful Moon Bears - a first major step in bringing bear farming to an end
forever.
