The Hilo unit's negotiations with Oahu Publications Inc. have hit a wall with the company's insistence on several offensive and anti-labor provisions, including random drug testing, no severance pay, mandated doctor's notes for sick leave, and use of vacation for sick leave, among others.
Currently, the unit is operating without a contract and members who remained after the sale of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald have seen their sick and vacation leave set back to zero.
The time for solidarity is now. Sign the petition to show your support for a fair contract.
We, the undersigned employees of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, support a fair contract for the staff at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
We request Oahu Publications Inc. reach an agreement with our brothers and sisters that includes the following:
A sick leave policy that doesn’t punish employees for becoming ill and helps ensure a healthy and productive workplace.
A substance abuse policy that deals with offenders but doesn’t subject all to arbitrary and intrusive testing.
Past-service credit that recognizes the staff’s many years of dedicated service and institutional knowledge that a newspaper requires to succeed.
Severance pay for laid-off employees.
Fair reimbursement for mileage and other work-related expenses.
