Background (Preamble):
Whereas, the Sudanese government continues to commit the only genocide recognized by the United Nations and the United States Government while it is still occurring.
Whereas, 400,000 Darfurian civilians have died since 2003, 2.5 million have been displaced and atrocities are ongoing.
Whereas, some foreign corporations provide the funds for the Sudanese government to continue this genocide by supporting its oil, power, and mineral industries.
Whereas, the Commonwealth of Virginia invests in companies that aid and abet the genocidal practices of the Sudanese government.
Whereas, diplomatic efforts to stop genocide in the Sudan have failed.

Petition:
We, the undersigned, call on the Virginia General Assembly to help de-fund genocide in the Sudan by divesting all Commonwealth funds, including Virginia Retirement System funds, from corporations that support the genocidal Sudanese government.
