Georgian refugees from Abkhazia and South Ossetia demand that Russia let them return to their homes in these regions. Abkhazia and South Ossetia remain territories occupied by Russia.
Abkhazia (Original non-Russian name: Apkhazeti) and South Ossetia (Original, non-Soviet name: Shida Kartli) remain territories occupied by Russia. In both occupied regions are ruled by artificially created, soviet-style dictatorships. The so-called border and the checkpoints are controlled by Russian troops and secret services. The very few civilians of Georgian nationality that still live in Abkhazia are NOT allowed in schools, they are being assaulted and abused on a daily basis. The Georgian language is forbidden in both of these Russian occupied-regions. Ancient Georgian churches in Abkhazia were defaced, whitened and transformed into Russian-style churches.
Abkhazia and South Ossetia are completely isolated from the rest of the world. There is no international monitoring or presence of international organizations. Instead the regions are full of Russian military and secret services, that keep everything closed and under control. People are being kidnapped and tortured by these structures on a daily basis, often based on ethnic background.
In 1992-1993 and in 2008, Russia organized an ethnic cleansing of Georgians in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. More than 400,000 Georgians were driven out of Abkhazia & South Ossetia and are not allowed to return to their homes until today.
Why doesn't each and every representative visiting Abkhazia ask the regime the following question: what's the reason for refusing a particular ethnic group the right to enter Abkhazia and come back to their own homes and property? If this question is asked, the usual answer is: "we cannot guarantee their security". If Abkhazia wants to be an independent country and attract tourists, then how will it guarantee security for them?
