15% of accidental deaths in infants are caused by accidental suffocation. There is little to no education on safe sleeping arrangements for infants and children under 5 years.

We constantly see advertisers in the media showing infants placed in beds with padded surfaces, quilts, blankets, stuffed animals, and other suffocation hazards.

Theron Anakin Buckbee is one such victim of the lack of education of this subject in the United States. Theron was placed to bed with 2 thin fleece blankets and was found by his father, tangled and dead at the age of 5 months. It only took 2 hours between the time that Theron was laid down with his blankets and the time that his father found him.

A post by Theron's mother on Circle of Mom's instigated the suggestion that perhaps a bill should be petitioned to the Senate for education of proper sleeping arrangements for infants, as well as the revision of the media's allowance to advertise the unsafe practices that cause these accidents every day.

15% of accidental deaths in infants are caused by accidental suffocation. These accidents are caused by lack of education in new parents. Some hospitals require a car seat education course, an infant CPR course, and the necessary education to properly care for an infant with special needs. No one, however, requires education for safe sleeping for babies.

We, the undersigned, propose that the United States as a whole, make it mandatory to educate new parents of the risks associated with placing infants to bed with blankets, pillows and stuffed animals, as well as that they form a bill to mandate how advertising is shown for products geared toward use with infants.
