Cape Alumina Pty Ltd. wants to mine in The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. There is a reported 100 million tonnes of bauxite on the Reserve. Bauxite is converted into aluminum.

The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve was once the 135,000 hectare Bertiehaugh Station up until the government in 2007 gave it to Terri Irwin an the Australia Zoo in honour of the late Steve Irwins memory. 15 per cent of the Reserve is covered by a mining lease which is owned by Cape Alumina.

With all this said do you think that Cape Alumina has the right to go in and mine? Think about it for a minute. If they go in an mine think about all the jobs they will provide especially for the indigenous peoples since Cape Alumina is largely made up of aboriginals. Think. A Lot of aboriginals struggle at the best of times to make ends meet in Australia.

At present Cape Alumina Pty Ltd. is ever so closer to making this come true. They are at the second phase and they now hold two exploration permits.
I ask you again do you think this is right?

This Reserve is a highly ecologically sensitive area. The Reserve is located in Cape York Peninsula in Northern Queensland. This is a grassy savanna woodland. Despite the allegations that there is only wild pigs and pests in the area to be mined and that no harm would come to the mined area there is proof to the contrary. There are so many species of plants and animals found there that are no where else in Australia or for that matter in the rest of the world. The Reserve is filled with mini ecosystems. If even a small portion was mined it would be a huge rippling effect disaster. What ever mini ecosystems were there would be gone. There is a tight symbiotic relationship with all the plants and animals creating a perfect balance.

If the plants and wildlife and especially the wildlife of the mining area weren't killed immediately upon mining they would soon perish. They would not thrive even in another part of the reserve. This in turn would create a domino effect, causing a major imbalance. The whole Reserve will be impacted not just in the mining area.
I ask you again do you think this is right?

The plants and animals of this earth have just as much of a right to life as we do. We are not above them. I believe Cape Alumina does not have the right to mine in The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. They would be upsetting a delicate ecosystem. They would be putting some animals and plants on the endangered list and no doubt into extinction as well.

And as for people finding employment and making money out of this mining project still doesn't give a good enough reason to go ahead and mine in this region. Especially if you realize in doing so they would be creating a disaster not just for the plants and and animals but for us to. Northern Queensland is a vital part of Australia. It is the lungs.

Steve Irwin was a light year ahead of all of us in wisdom, strength, compassion and understanding. He saw the Big Picture! This Reserve should be should be left in pristine shape in honour of him.

Please help me to convey a message to Chief Dr. Paul Messenger. Cape Alumina Pty Ltd. must not go ahead with the mining. They must realize in doing so would be disastrous and there would be no recovery from it.

And last but not least in my belief that if they went ahead with the mining they would be spitting on a dead conservationist's grave.

So please sign this petition. The more voices the better the chance of stopping this potential disaster.
