The Legalization of Marijuana

Published by Derek Garcia on Jul 13, 2004
Target: The Congress of the United States of America
Background (Preamble):
Federal law prohibits the possession and use of marijuana. Certain state and city ordinances provide a little leniency on this issue, but not enough. The fact of the matter is that marijuana should be completely legalized.

The legalization of marijuana would have a definite positive economic influence. For one, legalization of marijuana would allow many legal pot fields to start operating, providing jobs for field workers. Also, many small businesses would be created devoted to the sales of marijuana, providing more jobs and more privately owned businesses. Additionally, business owners would have to obtain sales permits, which would generate money for local governments. The tax money obtained by local, state, and the federal governments should also be taken into account.

All in all, there would be few if any problems caused by the legalization of marijuana. There would, of course, have to be certain restrictive laws placed on the use and possession of marijuana, probably similar to those laws on the use and possession of alcohol. For example, age requirements, public intoxication laws, and laws against driving while under the influence. On the other hand, marijuana-related crimes would decline, as the smuggling of marijuana would become unprofitable.

Please, consider these words and legalize marijuana.
Petition:
We, the undersigned, would like for marijuana to be legalized with certain restrictive laws for the enjoyment of responsible adults.
