Imagine how much money has been pumped out of Randolph County and other dry counties in the 60+ years dry county prohibition has been in effect! The current situation forces people to drive to drink. That's not a good combination!

When U.S. Prohibition ended in 1933, all of Arkansas was wet. At that time it took 35% of registered voters to call for a local option election on the wet/dry issue.

No one could get that number of signatures, so the legislature lowered to it to 15% of voters, to give local voters the option to decide local issues.

But once counties voted dry, the wet county liquor store lobby, to protect their monopoly, then persuaded the legislature to change the law and require signatures of 38% of voters to change a county back to its original wet condition.

The liquor lobby's recent campaign against Issue 4 centered on "keep the decision local". But with the bar currently set at 38%, it's nearly impossible for local people to even get the wet/dry issue on the ballot.

Ask your state legislator and state senator to support lowering the local option percentage to a more reasonable number, such as that required to get any other issue on the local ballot.

We, your constituents, urge you, our elected public official, to support lowering the wet/dry local option percentage to a more reasonable number, such as that required to get any other issue on the local ballot.
