Background (Preamble):
Bride-burning is an often overlooked form of domestic violence practiced mainly in countries on or around the Indian subcontinent, though in recent years it has been found present in countries around the world.
Bride-burning occurs when a woman is murdered by her husband and/or his family for her family's refusal to pay additional dowry. The victim is typically doused with kerosene, gasoline, or other flammable liquid, and set alight, leading to death by fire.
Most cases will be explained as a careless accident by the victim or desire to commit suicide. It continues to be highly institutionalized by social and religious acceptance.
