The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today issued an statement congratulating the people of Honduras on the country’s presidential and legislative elections last Sunday:

“Canada congratulates the Honduran people for the relatively peaceful and orderly manner in which the country’s elections were conducted. While Sunday’s elections were not monitored by international organizations such as the Organization of American States, we are encouraged by reports from civil society organizations that there was a strong turnout for the elections, that they appear to have been run freely and fairly, and that there was no major violence."

Have a wonderful Winter holiday season.

As my representative in Ottawa, I am urging you to take action to support the coming elections in Honduras scheduled for November 29, 2009. Canada has been silent and needs to show being a leading nation once more time to promote a representative democracy in Honduras which is indispensable for the stability, peace and development of the region.

Canada has a vested interest in seeing a democratic resolution to the Honduran political crisis, not because we have mining companies or a small amount of bilateral trade with Honduras, but as a nation that projects its own values in the promotion of democracy and human security.

Many thanks in advance for your support in this vital matter.
