Iowa is one of three states in the nation with no helmet law for motorcyclists. This has lead to more deaths, injuries, and spending of taxpayer money from motorcycle crashes. The following are statistics that illustrate how imperative a universal helmet is for Iowa.
The number of hospitalizations due to motorcycle crashes have increased more than 3% annually on average since 2003.
Total cost of hospitalizations due to motorcycle crashes has increased more than 18% annually on average since 2003.
Helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 69%.
Motorcyclists without helmets are more than twice as likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
