Sullivan County Living Wage

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED RESIDENTS OF SULLIVAN COUNTY, hereby petition the
Sullivan County Legislature to
take action immediately to establish living wage legislation for Sullivan County, as follows:

WHEREAS, large numbers of
Sullivan County residents earn
poverty wages and less, and,
WHEREAS, low wages drive up the
cost of social services and
increase taxes, and,
WHEREAS, increased earnings
provide more purchasing power,
and
WHEREAS, economic development
requires improved working
conditions, and
WHEREAS, many communities
have demonstrated the benefits
of a living wage, and
WHEREAS, organizations in our
community are prepared to help
draft the legislation, and
WHEREAS, the County legislature
has the responsibility for
initiating change through
legislation, and
WHEREAS the need for
improvement of wages and
working conditions, and for
strong and sustainable economic
development is urgent,

WE, THEREFORE, THE
UNDERSIGNED RESIDENTS OF
SULLIVAN COUNTY HEREBY
REQUEST THAT:
‡ the Labor Committee of the
Sullivan County Legislature be
mandated to draft the necessary
legislation;
‡ this mandated assignment
begin within 5 days of receipt of
this petition;
‡ the Labor Committee work in
cooperation with Sullivan Peace
and Justice and other
organizations allied with Sullivan
Peace in the quest for living wage
legislation;
‡ the committee take into
account the needs of all
segments of the community and
the impact of living wage
legislation on all aspects of life in
Sullivan County;
‡ the proposed legislation be
submitted to the Legislature no
later than six (6) months
following the initiation of the
drafting process.
