From our understanding of the Montessori philosophy, the natural environment is essential for optimum growth and development of the child.
We are fortunate that our school in the middle of the city, has a greenbelt with healthy wildlife only a few yards away.
However, if the plans for the new playground proceed, this nature area wll be eliminated, and the opportunity to watch and learn about a myriad of wildlife would be greatly diminished.
Having the playground directly in front of the 2 downstairs classrooms would also be extemely disruptive to both the children and teachers and would impact their ability to learn.
We believe it would be antithetical to the Montessori system to construct a barrier between the child and the natural environment.
We, the undersigned, call on the Montessori Children's House Board of Directors to stop the playground expansion and research options that would not destroy the natural habitat north of the MCH building.
Such options that should be considered include, using the empty lot east of the building; creating an indoor/outdoor exercise program that encourages physical year-round activity; reconfiguring the current playground.
