The Dollar Tree opening on the corner of North Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive came as a shock to this community.

• A full-service grocery store offering wholesome and nutritious foods would best serve the neighborhood.

• The location was renovated with a $400,000.00 loan from Milwaukee Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to prepare for a “full service grocery store.”

• Those who have better access to supermarkets have lower levels of obesity and related diseases.

• USDA reports show that segregation by race and income are associated with limited access to healthy food options.

• One of the most powerful predictors of limited access to food variety is socioeconomic disadvantage.

• We want fresh food options for our families, not artificial foods that lead to poor health.

• The NAACP will launch a petition in support of fresh food options at the MLK Supermarket location as initially promised.

• The Dollar Tree’s food seller’s license for the 2303 N. MLK Dr. location will be heard at the Common Council’s Licenses Committee meeting on Thursday, June 13 at City Hall. Write letters to express that you are not in favor of the food license without a “full service grocery store”.

We, the undersigned residents of Wisconsin, oppose the opening of a Dollar Tree on the corner of North Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive.

The location was renovated with a $400,000.00 loan from the Milwaukee Economic Development Corporation to prepare for a “full service grocery store.” The Dollar Tree does not fit the definition.

We advocate for accountability and fresh food options in our communities.
