Target:
to prevent the Mayor of Memphis Tennessee from tearing down Gen. N.B. Forrest's statue and disente
Region:
United States of America

Mayor A.C Whorten of Memphis Tennessee seeks to remove the memorial statue dedicated to confederate Civil War General Nathan Bedford Forrest from a public park in the city center, and disinter and rebury the remains of General Forrest and his wife. Both the memorial stature and the General's mortal remains have resided in the park since 1904. The mayor has elected to pursue this course of action due to the present anti-southern sentiment stirred up by the recent tragic and abhorrent event that took place in Charleston South Carolina. As a advocate for the preservation of our national history, and a descendent of the late General Forrest, I cannot in good conscience allow these action to go forth without doing all within my power to prevent them.

General Forrest, although having fought against the interests of the nation, and founding the Klu Klux Klan, was a valiant general officer, and worthy adversary, and by that reasoning alone, deserving of his place of honor in the capital city of the state of his birth. It is my contention also that desecrating a war memorial, and disintering human remains from a site where both have enjoyed their place of honor for over a century is unconscionable. Agree with the man's politics or no, his memorial and gravesite are hallowed ground, and not subject to violation by the forces of political correctness.

Also, as I stated earlier, General Forrest is family. He is my step-father's great grandfather, so My family and I have an emotional intetest in seeing tha his legacy carries on, and that his memorial and gravesite remain undisturbed.

Mayor Whorten would not have his ancestors' graves desecrated, and it is my contention that he shouldn't attack mine. Please sign this petition in the interest of history, family honor, and just plain decency.

Thank you and God Bless.

We the undersigned call upon the Mayor of the City of Memphis Tennessee to cease and desist is his current intentions to remove the memorial statue and disinter the mortal remains of Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest from the place of honor both occupy in you city center.

As one of his living descendants, this action is of great distress to me and others in my family, as it represents the desecrating of a family member's earthy remains. I appeal to Mayor Worton's sense of history as well as his sense of honor and decency, not to pursue his intended course of action regarding out ancestors eternal repose.

Yours in all due respect

Phillip Scott Berger and family
