On Friday July 1, 2011, Nike quietly announced that it had signed a sponsorship deal with convicted animal abuser Michael Vick. While Vick served a jail term for his crimes, he narrowly escaped much more serious federal racketeering charges by pleading guilty to lesser crimes.
During the investigation, it was revealed that dog fights were regularly held on land owned by Vick, and that dogs were horribly maimed, killed, abused, and executed by cruel and inhumane ways including drowning, electrocution, and hanging.
If you are one of the millions of family dog owners or sport dog enthusiasts who's dog is a part of the family, or a valued part of a team, we urge you to sign this petition, which will then be delivered to Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton OR.
We, the undersigned, ask Nike World Headquarters to cancel the sponsorship contract recently signed with convicted animal abuser Michael Vick.
As representatives of the millions of dog owners and legitimate sport dog enthusiasts who's dog is part of the family, or a valued member of a team, we abhor the abuse, injury, torture, and death of the animals that were part of Mr. Vick's dog fighting organization.
We believe that Mr. Vick's crimes are so fraught with moral turpitude that he cannot in any possibility be a good role model for our children, aspiring athletes, or potential Nike customers.
We urge you, instead, to deal with one of the thousands of upstanding, honorable athletes that would do a much better job of representing your company, and not associate yourself with a person of Mr. Vick's character.
