For the past 20 years, SKDC have been mowing and maintaining the green spaces on numerous Jelson Homes estates in Stamford.

However, it recently came to light that no formal agreement had ever been made to transfer the land into the Council’s care. Consequently Jelson Homes still own the land and are liable for its maintenance.

Unwilling to pay for its upkeep, Jelson Homes applied for planning permission to build on many of the greens. Although some were turned down on the basis of current planning policy, local residents were forced to form a committee to fight to keep some of the more vulnerable spaces as community greens.

On having their planning applications rejected, Jelson Homes have now put a total of 20 sites, which we believe to be public open space, in Stamford up for auction.

We believe this is only the beginning of the issue and that more planning applications and auctions are planned over the coming months.

We believe these spaces should be retained for the community and used as they were originally intended – for play areas, local recreation and ‘green lungs’ to add to the quality of life and enjoyment of those living on the estates.

We, the undersigned, call on Jelson Homes to:

1. Stop their attempts to profit from the development or sale of Stamford's community green spaces.

2. Engage in meaningful discussions with South Kesteven District Council with the aim of permanently safeguarding these greens for community use.
