90 million women and girls over the age of 9 yrs live with the consequences of female genital cutting in Africa. While 3 million girls are at risk of female genital cutting, annually.
This was confirmed by research papers prepared by the South African government at the second Women's Conference of the Pan African Parliament in 2009. The papers state that despite negative and damaging effects, the practise continues to persist.
The time to establish the relevance of this practise here in SA is now. The time to honour our young girls and women has come. Let's find healthy ways of honouring becoming women.
Let those of us who can speak... speak for those who are unable to speak for themselves.
I intend breaking the silence around this secret practice of female genital cutting.
I want to encourage dialogue amongst health professionals, government, child rights and women's rights organisations on ways of collating research so as to establish the prevalence of this practice and to pave a way forward that does not involve genital cutting.
In respect of our human rights, our ancestors, and our bodies, we want to create healthy rituals that welcome girls into womanhood.
