Since the beginning of 2015, Burundi has been gripped by a political crisis directly resulting from the incumbent president's decision to breach the constitutional term limit. Following peaceful protests to his unconstitutional third term, there have been violent repressions of the population and there continues to be gross violations of human rights.

In March 2016 the European Council suspended support to the Burundi goverment and its institutions. The Council set out measures to be taken by the Burundian government before resumption of full cooperation.

Such measures included swift return to compliance with democratic principles and values, human rights and the rule of law on the basis of the Cotonou agreements and the principles set out in the Arusha agreements.

Yet, on 20 June 2016, the Council authorised the signature and provisional application of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the EU and the East African Community of which Burundi is a member state.

To date the Burundian government has not taken any of the cited measures above, set out by the Council as a prerequisite for resumption of cooperation.

Stop EU signature of the economic partnership agreement with Burundi.

The Burundian government continues to violate human rights as reported by Human Rights Watch and other human rights organisations.

A trade agreement between the EU and Burundi (through the East African Community) will be economically supporting an oppressive regime.

Give your signature to the following:

We demand that the EU upholds its decision from March 2016
- to maintain its financial support to the population and its humanitarian assistance
- to suspend its direct support of the Burundian government and therefore not sign a new economic partnership agreement with Burundi in September 2016.

The signatures will be sent to the European Parliament in September 2016, when the application of the economic partnership agreement between the EU and the East African Community will be discussed and signed.
