I have been sickened by the recent spate of photos and videos depicting cruelty to domestic and live export animals. Recent live export photos have been graphic; The truth is that this level of cruelty can be, avoided by using local Abattoirs. The slow deaths of thousands of animals during the shipping phase is bad enough and livestock that survives the trip will be dispatched in, a manner that is nothing short of barbaric torture. The use of sledgehammers, to kill animals while tied to a post is prevalent and sub- human. We ae losing respect within the international community for continuing to support this trade.
Our close trading partner, New Zealand, add value to their, homegrown, live export products by using local abattoirs. The meat is then vacuum packed and arrives "fresh" and, is of better quality than ours because there is no bruising that occurs during lengthy sea voyages nor damage to the meat caused by stress during unacceptable slaughtering methods.
There is another benefit achieved by, using local abattoirs and that is more jobs at home. It has been shown that, by using local abattoirs, there is potential to create fourfold the number of jobs that the current model produces.
We, the undersigned, request the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Barnaby Joyce, take prompt action to cease the present method of exporting live animals to overseas destinations when it is shown, repeatedly that, the shipping stage has and, continues to cause unacceptable pain and suffering to the beasts.
Further, the Minister Mr. Barnaby Joyce, take prompt action to cease live animal exports altogether due to the treatment and unacceptable cruelty to animals that arrive at their destination.
The method of dispatching the animals is, inhuman and demonstrates a total lack of empathy on the customers behalf. It is just not, not acceptable in the 21st century.
