In 1867, Joseph Howe attempted to separate Nova Scotia by notifying the Government of Canada that the people of this province were unjustly pushed into confederation.

At that time 31000 out of 48000 electors of the province of Nova Scotia then expressed their desire to separate.

We, the undersigned, and the people of Nova Scotia, call on the Government of Canada and the Monarchy to recognise our sovereignty and unlawful inclusion into confederation, that there being no Statute of the Provincial Legislature confirming or ratifying the British North America Act (Constitution Act), and it never having been consented to nor authorized by the people, nor the consent of the Province in any other manner testified, the preamble of the Act, reciting that this Province has expressed a desire to be Confederated with Canada and New-Brunswick is untrue, and when Your Majesty was led to believe that this province had expressed such a desire, a fraud and imposition was practised on Your Majesty.
