Say NO to Shoppers' Super Store!

STOP the development of a Shoppers Drug Mart Super Store on Greenbank Rd and help preserve the quiet and safe neighborhoods of Trend-Arlington and Craig Henry.

The proposed development at #181 Greenbank Rd. is currently zoned "Commercial Office" which does NOT permit the development of retail stores.

The decision by Shoppers Drug Mart to lease #181 Greenbank in anticipation of developing a Super Store at this location was premature, does not adhere to current zoning by-laws and is NOT in the best interest of the community for the following reasons:

1) Our long-established and closely knit residential communities don't need a super-sized retail outlet located right across the street from Knoxdale and Greenbank Public Schools. We are well served by the existing drugstore at Greenbank Square but would also welcome the expansion of the current site.

2) The resulting increase in traffic would pose an increased risk to our children who traverse the closest main intersections on their way to and from school and church, and who play in the community space in and around the school and community centre after school is dismissed.

3) The zoning change would act as a precedent for retail zoning to be expanded to other properties on the east side of Greenbank Rd. between Bateman and Banner Road, a development our communities would not welcome; and

4) The additional traffic from people not living in our community, and the disruption of traffic flow from vehicles turning in and out of the proposed store, would increase the opportunity for accidents and exacerbate the existing situation whereby residents of our communities already find exiting onto Greenbank from Bateman, Bellman, Canfield, Banner, and Craig Henry slow at many times of the day.

5) Moving the main functions of the drugstore out of the mall will draw traffic away from Greenbank Square and will hurt the small businesses in the mall, many of whom are single proprietors living with their families in our community.

There is a better solution for our community!

Let's persuade Shoppers Drug Mart to do the right thing and remain at Greenbank Square and expand there instead of building a stand-alone store across the street.
