Save the heART of Britain... Don’t kill our culture, kill the Cuts

David Cameron emphasises the importance of tourism in rebuilding our economy, and has pledged a commitment to building the “strongest possible tourism strategy”.

We believe that tourism and arts investment go hand in hand.

Every £1 invested by the UK Arts Council generates another £2 from commercial sources.

The UK economy benefits from investment in the arts.

However, threatened government cuts of up to 40% mean that the Department of Media Culture and Sport faces redundancies for half its workforce.

One quarter of the 880 Arts Council funded bodies will close.

Theatres will go dark, museums will shut, music events will diminish and UK museums and galleries will commission fewer exhibitions.

Tourism will inevitably decline.

Not only this. Everyone in the UK will lose out directly. Many communities will suffer from a lack of Arts Council funded programmes that improve kids’ academic performance and enhance community pride.

We support an audit to improve Art Council efficiency, but this will improve an already profitable enterprise.

It’s an economically viable investment. It’s a cultural investment.

We, the undersigned, believe that the DCMS is a vital resource and request that the UK government halt the budget cuts to this department.
