As a professional horseman I am very concerned about the movement to abolish Carriage Horses in NYC.
Animal Right Activists have joined forces with Mayor DiBlasio to eradicate the carriage horse from New York City or at the very least severely limit their presence. They use the excuse that these horses are mistreated. Nothing could be further from the truth. They are regulated as to when they can work, how many hours, and if the temperatures reach extremes. They also enjoy a mandatory 5 week"holiday" every year.
Vet exams are required every 4 to 8 months along with a yearly exam. They must be older than 5 and younger than 26. The stall sizes must be big enough to turn around and safely lie down safely. The horse has helped man to build civilization for thousands of years, now we are trying take away their livelihood.
We the undersigned call on the New York City Council and Mayor DiBlasio to save the Carriage Horse Industry. It is an integral part of the History of NYC and would be a terrible economic blow to the tourism.
The horses are very well regulated , and any action to limit or eliminate the Horse carriages would cause irreparable loss to the livelihood's of the drivers and their families.
Finally Please don't fool yourself these horses will be sent to the slaughter house if this industry is abolished.
