Calen is a small community situated 60km north of the regional centre of Mackay. The Calen Kindy services an area from Midge Point through to Kuttabul, and when operating is the only kindgarten/daycare service within it's district, this emphasises the necessity of the service and the support it offers to the community.
The Calen Kindy has been successfully operating for over 45years as a non-profit incorporated establishment, providing essential learning tools to the children of the local community.
The Kindy has recently been scrutinised by the Labor Government, deeming it not up to government standards and incorrectly licensed and subsequently forced to close. The same Government states "A childs participation in quality early childhood education lays the foundation for their future success in leaning and life" on their "Kindergarten for Every Queensland Child" web page.
The same page continues to state they are "Developing innovative ways to provide a kindergarten program that meets the needs of families and children living in rural remote locations".
We, the under signed, call on our Sate and Federal Governments to act now to ensure Calen will recieve a kindergarten funded by the State Government by 2012 in the "Kindergarten for Every Queensland Child" campaign, this is to ensure the needs of our rural remote community are met on an educational and community services level for our families and our Children - our future!
