Chávez ordered the incarceration, fraudulent trial, 30 year sentence and slow death of Iván Simonovis, a Venezuelan law enforcer who protected protesters from government sympathisers during demonstrations on April 2002. Simonovis, a very sick man, languishes and slowly dies in prison, in appalling conditions.
On febreuary 18, 2014, Leopoldo Lopez, an important resistance leader was imprisoned by the Maduro regime, who will force a fraudulent trial and sentence upon López who, at this point in time is also incarcerated under unusually cruel and harsh conditions.
We, the undersigned, call on the UN to monitor the imprisonment conditions and health of Leopoldo López, as well as the due process of law established by the Venezuelan Constitution. We also urge the activation of OAS' CIDH, Cofavic and the Venezuelan Prison Observatory, in order to avoid a personal tragedy.
