Leicestershire County Council will no longer pay for our Library; so Burbage Parish Council considered ways to fund the library and keep it open.

However the recent consultation, carried out over the summer of 2014, achieved a very low response and therefore the Parish Council felt that it could not be justified in spending money to keep the library open.

Yet, if we all respond quickly there may be time to save the library!

It is a great facility for old and young alike - parents especially, should bring children to use the library after school - if we lose the library it will be gone forever. Indeed - this community effort may inspire more people to use the library... especially if issues such as the "inconstant opening times" can be addressed.

The Parish council was proposing an average annual charge of £5 per household (council tax band dependent) to cover the cost of operating the library - yet many volunteers stepped forward to offer to staff the library and so the actual charge could well be lower than this worst case.

By signing this petition we confirm that we would be prepared to pay an additional annual council tax charge of up to £5 per household (on average) in order to fund the library.

We ask Burbage Parish Council to respond to this petition by urgently reconsidering the funding of the library; and if possible to seek to reduce the operating cost of the library by the enlisting of volunteers.

The parish council should include provision for the funding of the library within the Budget for 2015/6 and beyond.
