SAVE BABE!

Target: The Hon Chris Cummins MP, Acting Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
Region: Australia
Web site: http://www.savebabe.com
Background (Preamble):
February 19, 2006
Breeding sows are confined in tiny metal stalls with no bedding or straw and are forced to lie on wet concrete floors for months on end.
The pigs don't even have enough space to turn around! Intensive farming is designed to maximise productivity and profits, leaving the welfare of animals secondary.
These stalls are used extensively in Australia but have been banned or are being phased out in other countries. The pigs literally go crazy, biting the bars around them. The government is not opposed to intensive animal production systems and housing provided they comply with the "Codes of Practice for the Welfare of Animals".
The codes are supposed to ensure that farm animals are treated in a humane way. Denying animals freedom of movement or exercise, docking tails, clipping teeth, castrating piglets, mulesing sheep, de-beaking hens and de-horning cattle - ALL WITHOUT ANAESTHETIC - is not humane.
If any of the above procedures involved a cat or dog it would result in a cruelty prosecution. Why are farm animals allowed to suffer? How can the government think that they aren't suffering?
Please help our farm animals and sign the petition to have the the 'Codes of Cruelty' changed.
