#Roads & Transport
Target:
Ministry of Transportation
Region:
Canada

The premise for this petition is that many highway accidents are caused because of the mix of cars and trucks traveling in the same lanes. Traditionally we expect transports to travel in the right hand lane. This causes a number of problems as listed below. I propose they use the left lane.

Transports traveling in the right lane or middle lane obscure overhead and right hand signage for quite a distance. (Have you ever noticed that before?) Passenger vehicles often miss their exits entirely or cross multiple lanes at the last minute, causing accidents.

Merging onto highways with short on ramps is tricky with a string of transports following each other.

Vehicles of all kinds stopped on the right hand side of the road for towing, tire changes, accidents etc. will be safer without transports whistling by so close.

Specific benefits of transports in the left lanes are as follows.

If a transport is changing lanes to the right, other traffic would immediately be aware that they are attempting to exit.

Trucks are now governed at 105km there is no reason why they cannot travel in a single lane. There will be no need for them to pass slow moving cars (as they won't be in their lane) and there will be less passing of each other because of the governors.

Transports often travel hundreds of miles before pulling off. Keeping them in the left lane will make merging onto highways safer.

Trucks traveling in the left lane will prevent the general traffic from viewing accidents on the opposite side of the road by creating a barrier. This will keep traffic flowing and will create a safer journey for everyone.

By signing this petition you will be indicating your support for designating the left hand lane for use by transports.

(At least this should apply to the 400 series highways).
