Sand and Gravel Extraction at Sandy Creek

First we would just like the community to know that we as a group know that trucks and truck drivers are the backbone of this country, we all need them and we would not be able to survive without them. We absolutely agree that we all need and benefit from the extraction of sand and gravel.

However we do not agree with the eradication of Class A Good Quality Agricultural Land in order to do so and feel that there are other sites available which are much better suited and will have far less effects on not only the environment, but what is already a rapidly reducing area of this state’s GQAL.

Some facts from the proposal are, this will supply employment for a site manager and one other worker. Anyone else needed on site are already under contract with other companies. This is intended to be a 30 year operation (as stated in the traffic assessment report). Operating 6 days a week, from 6am to 6pm. The first extraction area is 5 ha, the second extraction area is 4 ha and the third is 4 ha.

The proposed extraction site is all along the east side of the property along Sandy Creek, Zoned as Class A Good Quality Agricultural Land. In case any one is unsure 1 ha is approx 2.5 acres. There is a also a 1.5 ha Raw Material site and a 1ha plant site, 4 x 1,500m squared settlement ponds proposed again on Class A GQAL, which just happens to also encroach on the trigger area of a referable wetland, as does the proposed haulage route from the site and onto Sandy Creek Road.

There are 2 m and 3 m Flood Level Plains all along the proposed extraction site and a 4 m Flood Level Plain which runs straight through the proposed haulage route from Creek Side to Plant Site.

The proposal states that the company wish to store 10,000 l of Diesel on site and also makes mention of the fact that all run off goes into Sandy Creek and then directly into Somerset Dam approximately 10 km down stream.

Another statement made in the report is that there will be a truck and dog (trailer) movement every 15 minutes that’s at 150,000 tones per year but has left it wide open (depending on market demand) to go to extraction haulage of 1,000,000 tones per year. All traveling along the already notoriously dangerous D’Aguilar Highway.

If you live in Kilcoy, Woodford and everywhere else along the D’Aguilar Highway before and beyond than this is going to affect you. We would appreciate any comments if you have the time and an opinion either way please write a letter to the paper we welcome as much input from everyone, all opinions are appreciated and will be respected. There is a copy of the proposal at the Kilcoy Shire council office for all to enjoy.
