How can it be that the views of those who dislike an entertainment program or broadcast event even if in reality they would never choose that type of program as their normal viewing carries such weight, when those who may watch/listen and enjoy (or at least not be outraged) by such programs have no formal way to put across their view to the broadcaster.

The recent media feeding frenzy created by the Brand/Ross/Sachs broadcast and the constant ramping up of the complaints made to the BBC this created, appears rightly or wrongly to be taken as the opinion of all of the UK licence payers, despite being a small proportion of the population. The flaw with the system is that if you want to give a positive or neutral view on a broadcasting issue you have no direct outlet.

I like many others did not listen to the above broadcast live, but have listened and occasionally enjoyed the show but cannot claim to be a regular listener. However once it became the lead story on every news bulletin, I listened to a clip of it and found it to be typical Brand/Ross humour, which was at times crude but it was a blatantly an add lib developing joke unlikely to corrupt the morals of the nation given its timeslot and likely audience.

The BBC by this point seemed to changing its views and I thought I would contact them to say that as a licence payer I did not want the complaints of a few thousand to be taken as my view. The problem was that the BBC only has a very visible complaints site and I could find no equally visible way to put any counter view.

Hence at last I get to the point of this petition which is that by supporting this petition we ask that the BBC should review its complaints procedures so that people with a view other than negative, have an equally accessible facility to give their opinion. Other views are as valid and may be from the target and actual audience of a broadcast, giving a more balanced view of how licence payers view significant (and insignificant) broadcasting events.
