Do you know who to complain to or what action to take if you contract an injury or illness, or have been disfigured temporarily or even permanently scarred after a beauty treatment?

In Queensland, these types of treatments are classified as Personal Appearance Services and include:
• Beauty Therapists who may offer facials, hot or cold waxing hair removal services, relaxation massages, spray tanning or eyelash tinting, infills or eyelash extensions
• Nail Technicians
• *Tattooists
• Body Piercing

All businesses that offer personal appearance services must comply with the Public Health (Personal Appearance Services) Act 2003 and the Infection Control Guidelines, whose health standards are monitored and managed by your local council. Accordingly, any issues regarding hygiene or infection should be reported to the Environmental Health Department of your local council.

But apart from this, the Personal Appearance Service is generally not regulated (the exception being *Tattooists, who must be licensed and are regulated by Queensland Health).

This means that NO data is collected about illness or injury caused by these types of individual practitioners. This is a disgrace seeing that Australian’s spend huge amounts on their appearance each year. In fact in 2012 it was estimated by ASIC that more than $10 billion dollars was spent on personal care.

Nearly every other industry is regulated in some way, whether it is by government or self-regulation through associations or boards. These bodies are established to monitor and review complaints and disputes, develop and implement policy, guidelines and industry standards.

Our ideal outcome would be to create a body that regulates the industry however to start with we are petitioning for the Queensland Health to set up a system to monitor and review all reported injury or illness that can be attributed to the actions of a personal appearance service provider.

Overall this would give valuable data to detect any actual or potential problems in the industry and then used to implement change and best practice.

Please show your support for this initiative and encourage your friends to do so as well.

We, the undersigned, call on QUEENSLAND HEALTH, to establish a system to monitor and review all reported injuries or illnesses that can be attributed to the actions of an individual personal appearance service provider.
