Down South the Children do not have any after school recreation centers, community pools, YMCA's or boys and girls club to keep them entertained and out of trouble. When Children get bored, they turn to doing things that could lead them to serious trouble. Some turn to doing drugs, selling drugs, drinking alcoholic beverages, stealing, graffiti, running away, prostituting and/or being exploited for illegal purposes.
A recreation center, where the children can come play basketball, volleyball, swimming or getting help with homework, gives the children something to look forward to and also, keeping them active keeps them off of the streets. We had 577 runaways last year and 590 this year so far.
These runaways turn to stealing and prostituting just to make ends meet. Eventually they become so depressed they begin drinking alcoholic beverages and doing drugs just to get through the day. They begin vandalising the neighborhoods, breaking into houses, robbing, stealing and hurting alot of other people. We need to provide the children down a place where they can go and enjoy.
We, the undersigned, call on the local government to come together and help us improve the south side of San Antonio, by upgrading and bringing it to standards of the North side, by adding a recreation center for the children, to help keep them busy and off the streets.
A place where they can get together and go swimming, play after school sports, like basketball, volleyball, get help with homework.
