Rastafari ia a African-centred religion which developed in jamaica in the 1930's, following coronation of Haile Selassie 1 as king of Ethiopia in 1930.

There are approximately one million world wide adherents of Rastafari as a faith. The 2001 census found 5,000 rasta living in England and Wales. There is no formal Rasta creed and slight different views in modern groups but the most important one doctrine is belief in the divinity of Haile Selassie.

Rasta regard themselves as genuine Israelites, who were enslaved and removed from there home land by white people. The movement's greatest concerns are the repatriation of blacks to their homeland, Africa, and the reinstatement of blacks' position in society
Rastafarians follow strict dietary laws and abstain from alcohol.

Rastafarians follow a number of Old Testament Laws
There is a separate code of religious practice for women in Rastafari
Rastafarians believe reincarnation follows death and that life is eternal
Rastafarians are forbidden to cut their hair; instead, they grow it and twist it into dreadlocks
Rastafarians eat clean and natural produce, such as fruit and vegetables
Rastafarians try to refrain from the consumption of meat, especially pork
Rastafarians are opposed to abortion and contraception

Although the government recognise rastafari as a religion the prison system doesn't and any rastafari in prison is being victimised and discriminated for practising there beliefs, and have no rights when challenging the system for equal rights to any other religion.

You don't need to be a rastafari to sign this petition just somebody that believes in equal rights.

We, the undersigned, call on all HMPRISONs to recognise and respect the rights of rastafari as a religion, and to give all prisoners that practise this religion equal rights as any other recognised religions in the prison system i.e. christianity, muslims.
