Dear President Barack Obama,

A time for change has come and I have decided to offer my public service by acknowledging critical areas in America that needs to be addressed with solutions. Mental health issues are very prevalent in today’s society among our heroic soldiers who should not be forgotten.

Our military veterans suffer from a serious mental disorder called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to recent statistics from the Veterans Administration (VA), an average of eighteen veterans commits suicide every day. That’s 126 veterans who kill themselves every week or some 6,552 who take their own lives each year. Our veterans are killing themselves at twice the rate of other Americans. One quarter of the homeless people in America are military veterans. That’s one in every four.

It is not the easiest thing to say “yes” to receiving mental counseling and our military families need “support” while their loved ones are deployed. Our veterans need mental health counseling on their return home, but it should not be optional but mandatory.

I am asking all military families who would like to see changes among our veteran and more support for their families during and after deployment, to sign this petition asking President Obama to agree to these solutions: If the government is not prepared to provide funding for every veteran and making sure they receive mandatory mental health analysis, the least that could be done is to: Provide support groups on every military base across America for military families back home.

These support groups should assess the needs of their families. Always make them aware about meetings, trips, and social gatherings. Be creative when providing programs that support the children of these families. Provide information about soldiers returning home. What should they expect, to do’s and not to do’s. It’s difficult to analyze a situation such as being deployed if you have never been. It’s difficult to assume how to interact when veterans return home, because you have no idea what that experience is like and vice versa when they return home.

Some have experienced “war” for years away from home, and their return home is somewhat like visiting a “foreign country” for the first time. On their return home and throughout their military career, I believe veterans have earned a right to spend time with their families for an adequate amount of days, such as 7 consecutive days, from time to time throughout the year and remainder of their duty.
