This petition is in regards to the issue of inmate visitation. The current system allows for family and friends, accompanied by family members of inmates, to visit them. However, ex-inmates who are also friends of the inmates serving their time and have nothing to do with the inmates case/incarceration are not allowed to visit them.

It is our belief that the following arrangement will not be detrimental in concern to security of the prisons. We propose an arrangement whereby ex-inmates are allowed to visit inmates accompanied by one of the inmates' family members.

Currently visitation is only allowed by an ex-inmate if he/she is legally married to the inmate. However, that is not the case for parties who are in a relationship but not married. It causes great unnecessary emotional distress on both sides.

The inmates' partner would naturally want to be there to encourage and assure him/her. This harmless arrangement we are petitioning for is by all means in accordance with the goal of reintegration to society and familial/societal support and encouragement. Not forgetting, the Yellow Ribbon Project.

A separate, more elaborate letter addressed to the relevant authorities will be issued.

We, the undersigned, call on the Singapore Prison Service to allow for visitation of inmates by friends, unbiased of whether they may be an ex-inmate, accompanied by one family member of the inmate.
