This precinct is extremely busy, in Summer the surrounding areas on weekends are 'parked out' by boat owners using the boat ramp, in winter the sports ovals are operating almost full time Saturday and Sunday. The park is a fantastic destination for Drummoyne attracting 100s of visitors every day.
Between 2010- 2012, Canada Bay Council with the assistance of State and Federal funding, invested approximately $6million in this precinct including upgrading the boat ramp and associated parking, upgrading the Oval including the installation of lighting, installation of public art, widening of foot paths.
However limited additional public parking was made available (all additional spaces at the ramp are for boat owners) and funding was not provided to enable safe access to the park, rather the only pedestrian crossing in the area is at Lyons Road. This area has also seen the introduction of the M50 (which has a layover next to the Oval).
Funding is sought in 2014/15 to build a pedestrian crossing near the corner of Westbourne and Bayswater Streets, in order that all can enter the park safely.
Funding is also sought for the playground to be upgraded, the equipment is minimal and out dated. This precinct attracts 100s of people on the weekend, both visitors and residents should have a good playground in this location.
In summary, funding is sought this year for a pedestrian crossing (at least one) and a quality playground at Taplin Park in 2014/15.
City of Canada Bay Council please prioritise funding in the 2014/15 Operating Plan to fund Capital Works to -
1. install traffic management facilities (in particular a pedestrian crossing) into Drummoyne Oval/ Taplin Park near the Westbourne St and Bayswater Road intersection; and
2. Upgrade the play equipment in Taplin Park to provide a safe and quality play experience for children.
