The Union of UEA Students has announced its intention to make redundant 10 of the 17 permanent retail staff it employs. The reasons given are to cut costs; this is despite this area of the business already producing significant surpluses.
Democracy is one of the key values of the Union, however prior to this announcement there had been no consultation with either students or staff.
The block grant that the Union of UEA Students receives from UEA is markedly low relative to other unions, with some comparable institutions receiving almost 5 times as much.
If the Unions financial position needs to be improved it is preferable to do so by increasing the block grant as opposed to making valued staff redundant.
We the undersigned call on the Union of UEA Students to halt the process of making staff redundant until such time as:
• The membership has been properly consulted over plans to make redundancies, including possible suggestions of alternative strategies, and,
• Staff have been properly consulted over plans to make redundancies including possible suggestions of alternative strategies, and,
• The possibility of acquiring an increased block grant has been fully exhausted.
