The Brooklyn College American Language Academy is closing its doors on May 24th . ESL students are being sent to other schools and teachers are either retiring or will be seeking new employment.

We, as students who have studied in this institution, are asking you to sign our petition to keep Brooklyn College American Language Academy open.

Dear Dr. Karen L. Gould,

I’m writing to ask you to reconsider your decision about discontinuing Brooklyn College ESL and TESOL programs; two exceptional institutions which have helped many students succeed.

The Brooklyn College ESL program has been home to foreign students for more than 15 years. We have grown up and become adults in a second language, in English, as most of us didn’t know how to speak and felt like children more than adults when we first came here.

The program not only helped us improve our language skills, but also it taught us how to think critically and enabled us to adjust to a new environment and culture. It has prepared many of us for college through writing essays, making presentations, participating in discussions, field trips, and many more activities. Learning how to speak English is not the only success we have achieved in this program; we have learned about American history and literature from our teachers and other nations’ cultures and histories from our classmates.

Many students have become full time matriculating undergraduate or graduate students in Brooklyn College after completing the ESL program. It is these two great programs that promote Brooklyn College among foreign students from all around the world.

I sincerely hope that you will reconsider your decision regarding the above mentioned importance of these programs and give future candidates the chance to have the best ESL education in NYC.
