Botulinum toxin (also called Botox or Dysport) is used for lots of different medical conditions; everything from sweaty armpits, an overactive bladder to muscle spasm in Cerebral Palsy.

The problem is that our government doesn't recognise that some women with severe pelvic pain need this too!

Other medical conditions have a Medicare item number which makes it easier for hospitals and doctors to provide this service.

We know that people with sweaty armpits, twitchy eyelid, a hoarse throat, stiff neck and overactive bladder find this treatment helpful, but are they really more deserving than young woman with severe pelvic muscle spasm pain who want to work, live normal lives, care for their families, or even walk without pain?

The Australian Government has recently completed a review of the use of Botulinum toxin for medical conditions. Patients with an overactive bladder were given an item number but women with pelvic pain were ignored.

Its not fair. Its not right.

THE ANSWER:
The problem is so easy to fix - with two alternatives.
An item number (18360) could be adjusted to include pelvic pain, or, a new item number could be created with guidelines to ensure it was used carefully for those who would benefit most.

To the Members of the Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS) Botulinum Toxin Review Panel.

Our call to action is for you to:

PLEASE PROVIDE AN ITEM NUMBER FOR BOTULINUM TOXIN USE IN PATIENTS WITH PELVIC PAIN.

PLEASE CHANGE YOUR DECISION and ALLOW CHRONIC PELVIC PAIN PATIENTS TO QUALIFY FOR THE NON-COSMETIC USE OF BOTULINUM INJECTIONS FOR PELVIC PAIN TREATMENT/MANAGEMENT.

Please reconsider the impact that your decision will have on women who are already suffering with chronic pelvic pain. Why are sweaty armpits, migraines, eyelid spasm and neck pain more important than pelvic pain?

This issue is vital to patient's having access to care, better quality of life, effective pain management and relieving some of the burden on the health system.

THOSE OF US WHO SUFFER WITH SEVERE PELVIC PAIN ARE IMPORTANT TOO.

Sincerely,
